The Keeneland September sale is the largest auction of its kind in the world and it perennially produces some of the top prices for young horses. Following is a list of yearlings in the Sept. 10 select session in Lexington that could command the big bucks:

Hip No. 2, a filly by Tapit —Nomistakeaboutit, by Affirmed. Consigned by Clearsky Farms, agent.
“She is a nice Tapit filly that is very popular,” said Clearsky’s Ted Voute of this gray or roan yearling that is from the family of European champion Negligent. “She’s a very American type. She looks like (champion and Kentucky Derby, gr. I, winner) Winning Colors. But she’s not Caro (the sire of Winning Colors) big; she’s got a bit more refinement.”

Hip No. 8, a filly by Street Cry (IRE) —Palangana, by His Majesty. Consigned by Gainesway, agent.
“She has a big walk and she uses herself well,” said Gainesway’s Neil Howard of this chestnut yearling, which is a half sister to champion Informed Decision. “She’s a well-balanced filly.”

Hip No. 15, a colt by Distorted Humor —River’s Prayer, by Devon Lane. Consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent for Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings.
“He’s by Distorted Humor and out of a really strong, good-looking (grade I-winning) mare; it’s just a great combination,” said Taylor Made’s Frank Taylor of this chestnut yearling. “He’s really strong and mature-looking.”

Hip No. 16, a filly by Empire Maker—Rutherienne, by Pulpit . Consigned by Stone Farm, agent.
“She is a beautiful filly that has a great walk and a wonderful temperament,” said Stone Farm’s Arthur B. Hancock III of this dark bay or brown yearling that is the first foal out of a grade I winner. “She really is nice.”

Hip No. 23, a filly by Dixie Union—Silence Dogood, by Grand Slam . Consigned by Twin Creeks Farm.
“She’s a very elegant, speedy type; we’ve had a lot of interest in her,” said Twin Creeks’ Kim Gullatt of this dark bay or brown yearling, which is out of a stakes winner.

“She’s just really balanced and really racy-looking; she’s got a great neck and shoulder,” said Taylor Made’s Frank Taylor of this bay yearling, which is out of a grade I winner and is a half sister to the stakes-placed winner Into My Soul. “She’s just a nice filly.”

“She is an absolutely beautiful filly with a huge walk and a lot of quality,” said Paramount’s Pat Costello of this bay yearling, which is out of a winning half sister to grade I winner Poet's Voice. “She’s a bit of a queen.”

“She is a beautiful example of both her sire and her dam,” said Eaton’s Reiley McDonald of this bay yearling, which is out of a grade I winner. “She has the best walk of any horse in our barn and she is from a family that is just burgeoning right now.”

“He’s a very racy-looking colt,” said Taylor Made’s Frank Taylor of this bay yearling that is a half brother to grade I winner Paynter, grade III winner Tiz West, and another stakes winner, Tizakitty. “He is very pretty for a Street Cry.”

“He is very representative of his sire and has been very well received,” said Gainesway’s Neil Howard of this gray or roan yearling, which is out of a grade II winner and is a half brother to stakes winner Starfish Bay. “He is very athletic and has a good temperament. He has a very good shoulder, good hip, and a good walk. He’s a leggy horse.”

Hip No. 45, a filly by Smart Strike —Untouched Talent, by Storm Cat. Consigned by Brookdale Sales, agent for Audley Farm Equine.
“She’s fabulous in a lot of ways,” said Brookdale’s Joe Seitz of this bay yearling, which is out of a grade III winner and is a half sister to grade I winner Bodemeister. “She’s very athletic. She’s got a great stretch and range to her conformation. She’s got a huge walk. And she has a very live, young, exciting pedigree. She’s hopefully the kind of filly that you’ll start a broodmare band with in about three and a half years.”

Hip No. 48, a colt by Medaglia d'Oro —Welcome Surprise, by Seeking the Gold. Consigned by Lane’s End, agent.
“He is a really tough, great-walking colt,” said Lane’s End’s Bill Farish of this dark bay or brown yearling that is out of a grade III winner and is from the family of Horse of the Year and classic winner A.P. Indy(a leading sire) and classic winner Summer Squall. “He has a super pedigree, obviously.”

Hip No. 49, a colt by Smart Strike —Wile Cat, by Storm Cat. Consigned by Eaton Sales, agent.
“He is a half brother to the brilliant (English group III-winning) filly Shumoos, who was second in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Sprint against colts,” said Eaton’s Reiley McDonald of this dark bay or brown yearling. “He is as close to perfect physically as you can get. He’s balanced and sound.”

Hip No. 52, a colt by Elusive Quality —Xtra Heat, by Dixieland Heat. Consigned by Woodford Thoroughbreds.
“I think he’s probably one of the best foals Xtra Heat has ever had,” said Woodford’s Matt Lyons of this chestnut yearling, which is out of a champion, is a full brother to stakes winner Elusive Heat, and is a half brother to added-money winner Southwestern Heat. “He’s a beautiful horse that is very well balanced and has a terrific walk. He’s got a little bit of his mother’s attitude.”

“She’s a May foal, but she has beautiful angles and a nice, easy walk,” said Romans Racing and Sales’ Teresa Little of this gray or roan yearling, which is out of a half sister to grade II winner and stakes producer Lu Ravi. The yearling’s dam also is a half sister to the dam of champion Halfbridled.“She’s just a lovely filly with a beautiful head that has been received really well,” Little added. “She has a perfect top line and is gorgeous.”

Hip No. 57, a colt by Bernardini —Banshee Winds, by Known Fact. Consigned by Woodford Thoroughbreds.
“He’s a half brother to Banshee Breeze, who was a champion,” said Woodford’s Matt Lyons of this dark bay or brown yearling. “We’ve had some Bernardinis over the last couple of years and I think this is the best one. He’s a really beautiful horse with a lovely eye, and he’s a great mover.”

“Dynaformers come in all shapes and sizes, and he’s one of the real good-looking ones like Barbaro,” said Three Chimneys’ Case Clay of this bay yearling, which is a half brother to grade III winner Garden District. “He’s shown himself well and been very popular. He’s all class.”

Hip No. 64, a filly by Dynaformer —Catchascatchcan, by Pursuit of Love. Consigned by Paramount Sales, agent.
“She is a lovely walker and a lovely, quality filly,” said Paramount’s Pat Costello of this bay yearling that is out of an English group I winner and is a half sister to Irish group II winner Antonius Pius, who was second in the Breeders’ Cup Mile (gr. IT).

“He’s a nice, good-sized, athletic colt,” said Lane’s End’s Bill Farish of this bay yearling whose second dam is a grade I winner. “He has a great profile, and he is a really good mover.”

“He’s a nice, big colt and is pretty refined for a Tiznow,” said Lane’s End’s Bill Farish of this bay yearling, which is out of a grade I winner and also is a half brother to grade III winner Newfoundland and stakes winner Full Mandate. “He is very athletic.”

“She has a lot of quality,” said Denali’s Craig Bandoroff of this chestnut yearling, which is out of a stakes winner that is a half sister to champion Boston Harbor. “As great a sire as Smart Strike is, a lot of times he doesn’t get you a pretty sale horse. But her dam is a beautiful mare and she kind of took her attributes and gave them to this filly.”

Hip No. 72, a colt by Bernardini —Come Together, by Dixie Union. Consigned by Gainesway, agent.
“If you look at a picture of his grandsire, A.P. Indy, you can see that he’s very like A.P. Indy,” said Gainesway’s Neil Howard of this bay yearling that is out of a winning half sister to grade III winner The Pamplemousse . “He has a good walk, good neck, good balance, and a good hip. He’s very difficult to fault on conformation.”

“He is just a fantastic horse,” said Michael Baum of this dark bay or brown yearling that is out of a half sister to grade II winner A. P. Warrior. “I say words about him that I’ve never said about other horses. Everybody loves him. He does everything right. He’s smart and strong. You can’t get him tired. He’s bigger than he looks because he’s well-proportioned.”

“He’s a kind of typical War Front, and his head’s a whole lot like lot his broodmare sire’s,” said Claiborne’s Dell Hancock of this dark bay or brown yearling, which is a half brother to grade I winner Contested. “He was a nice horse at the farm, but what’s been nice about him here is he just seems like he loves it. He shows well and he walks well. I hope they (the buyers) like him. I think he’s special.”

“He was bred by Mick Kinane, the jockey,” said Clearsky’s Ted Voute of this bay yearling that is a member of his sire’s first crop. “He’s a top, top horse physically that is very similar to his sire. But he’s probably got a little bit more refinement. He’s got the bone and he’s got the look, and he’s a great walker.”

“She’s a big, pretty filly and has got as good a pedigree as you’re going to find in the stud book,” said Denali’s Craig Bandoroff of this bay yearling, which is from the family of Kentucky Broodmare of the Year Better Than Honour, champion and Belmont Stakes (gr. I) winner Rags to Riches, and Belmont Stakes (gr. I) winner Jazil . “She’s a serious horse for a guy who wants a filly and then wants to have a good broodmare after she races.”

Based on conformation, pedigree, attitude, and athletic ability, he’s the best horse I’ve ever been around since I’ve been in the business.”

She’s a special filly.”

“She’s as good a physical specimen as you could find by any sire,” said Eaton’s Reiley McDonald of this bay yearling, which is out of a grade II winner. “She is a top A.P. Indy filly out of a great race mare that has an air about her on the sale grounds that she knows she’s something special.”

“She is a May foal, so there’s still a lot to come with her (physically), but she’s very, very elegant,” said Mill Ridge’s Headley Bell of this bay yearling, which out of a grade III winner and is a half sister to grade II winners Wilburn and Beethoven. “She has wonderful presence, is by the right horse at the moment, and has a very solid family. She’s got what you’re looking for.”

“He is out of a mare that is 8-years-old and has already had two (Canadian) champions (Biofuel and Tu Endie Wei),” said Airdrie’s Bret Jones. “We’ve never had a mare at the farm do what she has done and this colt is just exceptional. He is exactly what we believe the top buyers are looking for. He is a big, strong, well-balanced horse that acts like he wants to win some important races.”

“I’ve seen most of the best colts in the sale. And not to take anything away from the other colts, this horse is in a different league,” said Eaton’s Reiley McDonald of the bay yearling, which is the first foal out of a grade I winner. “He has the size and scope of his mother, who ran on turf, dirt, and all-weather (surfaces). And he’s by the good American dirt sire Distorted Humor. He’s a lovely colt.”
