![]() My only thought it that having a race named for him at the site of his career ending injury, on the same Preakness day racecard will always conjure up memories of the injury. I'm not real keen on this.

![]() Sir Barton, entered the Kentucky Derby, on May 10th 1919 as a maiden...who's only purpose in the race was to run off and set a fast pace for the favorite, his stablemate Billy Kelly.
The maiden, playing the role of rabbit, won the Kentucky Derby by 5 lengths in wire-to-wire fashion. He wired them 4 days later in the Preakness. So sharp he was, that he was entered in the Withers 10 days after the Preakness, and he won. Of course, he would win the Belmont two weeks later and become the first horse in history to sweep the Derby, Preakness, and Belmont...what is now known as the triple crown. It's true...but kind of sounds like a Disney movie. In today's game, there is exactly a 0.00% chance of that ever happening. For one thing, the size of the foal crops were microscopic 85 years ago. If you ask me, they should run a $100,000 stake, restricted for maidens, as the first or second race on the KY Derby undercard. They can call it the Sir Barton Stakes. You'd have a full field...and a real productive maiden race. But hey, most ideas I formulate after having a few puffs of ganja are pretty bad I guess. |
