We are playing the Fair Grounds Races 2 through 13, culminating in the Louisiana Derby. Please have your selections for the points contest posted on this thread not later than 11:28 AM Central time (this is not a typo - Ruffian selected this early starting time and very full card of racing). With 8 stakes races on the card and some full fields, it should be a very competitive day.

One of the reasons for the somewhat early first post is that NBC Sports will be showing both the Fair Grounds Oaks and the Louisiana Derby, hosted by Randy Moss and Jerry Bailey. Coverage should be between 5:30 and 6:30 PM Eastern time.

It's been tough to do an adequate job of handicapping today's contest card with all of the distractions of March Madness. Here in CT it has been compounded by having a portion of the first two rounds of the men's bracket played in nearby Hartford and some of the first two rounds of the women's division on the UConn campus in Storrs. Those of us who have succumbed to the madness have been rewarded with some superb basketball, including the play of Ja Morant of Murray State, who may be the best college player I've seen since Ray Allen. Ironically, they hail from the same small town in South Carolina and Allen played high school ball with Morant's father.

OK, got to get to work on the Fair Grounds.

The jockey changes listed for the Fair Grounds card reflect one of the interesting facets of racing rules. Tyler Gaffalione has been taken off of three of his mounts early in the card. That is NOT because he missed his flight from Florida, but rather that he is still serving a suspension imposed at Gulfstream. However, he is still permitted to ride in stakes races for which he had made a commitment before the suspension was imposed, so he is able to keep his rides in the New Orlanns H., the Muniz Memorial, and especially on War of Will in the Derby.
