Luke Middlebrook's Happy Valley
Wednesday, September 25, 2024

Race 1: #1 Joyful Prosperity, #7 Sunny Baby, #3 Arthur’s Kingdom, #4 Fruit Warrior
Race 2: #7 Gallant Goody, #6 Speedy Chariot, #2 Dan Attack, #8 Beau Gosse
Race 3: #7 Sight Happy, #10 Talents Supremo, #2 Aeroinvincible, #5 Nebraskan
Race 4: #8 Foremost Teddy, #9 Gale Saga, #2 Snowalot, #4 Turin Warrior
Race 5: #6 Chain Of Gold, #12 I Can, #3 Samarkand, #4 Noble Pursuit
Race 6: #4 Matsu Victor, #8 Super Unicorn, #5 Brave Witness, #10 Gallant Crown
Race 7: #1 Prime Mortar, #2 Aurora Lady, #6 New Power, #7 Spicy Gold
Race 8: #3 Midori Glory, #1 Youthful Spirits, #4 O’Liner, #7 Healthy Healthy

Race 1 - WAN CHAI HANDICAP
#1 Joyful Prosperity faced a challenge from a wide gate first-up but made an eye-catching late charge to finish third. With a much-improved draw this week and a recent stable switch to Danny Shum appearing beneficial, his chances look promising. #7 Sunny Baby finished strongly into the runner-up position first-up over a mile at Sha Tin. He reunites with Zac Purton, who has been aboard for all three of his career wins, and the step up to 1800m should suit him well. #3 Arthur’s Kingdom ended his last campaign in fine form, culminating in an all-the-way victory. He looks poised to start this season on a high note. #4 Fruit Warrior had just one run in Class 5 last term, where he performed respectably despite racing wide mid-race. Expect to see improvement here.

Race 2 - QUARRY BAY HANDICAP
#7 Gallant Goody returns to the races and was eye-catching in his lead-up trial, following his best performance in his final run last season. He appears poised to make further progress this preparation. #6 Speedy Chariot finished nicely into fourth first-up, marking his initial attempt in Class 5. He can continue to improve second-up. #2 Dan Attack makes his debut in Class 5 here. He has been a tricky horse to catch, but this type of race should present a more manageable challenge. #8 Beau Gosse joined Francis Lui’s stable at the end of last season and resumed this preparation with a solid fourth-place finish, despite overdoing things on the lead.

Race 3 - NORTH POINT HANDICAP
#7 Sight Happy has potential. He over-raced fresh, but expect better things to come from him with more racing under his belt. He has drawn nicely low, which should give him every chance. #10 Talents Supremo comes out of a strong form race, finishing fifth to Packing Hermod. He needs to jump well to maximise his chances, though. #2 Aeroinvincible raced too keenly and was checked when beaten as a short-priced favourite first-up; he deserves another opportunity, although the wide draw isn’t ideal. #5 Nebraskan began to find his form towards the end of last season after a class drop, hinting at improvement to come.

Race 4 - KWUN TONG HANDICAP
#8 Foremost Teddy can be sided with here, especially with Purton on board from barrier 1. He was a solid third at this course and distance last time out, and he’s on an upward trend this preparation. #9 Gale Saga is lightly raced; despite breaking through in Class 5 last time, the rise to Class 4 should suit him well. He has more to come. #2 Snowalot will benefit from a rise in distance second-up, and reuniting with Lyle Hewitson is a positive. Barrier 2 ensures he gets the right run. #4 Turin Warrior may not be a prolific winner, but with Hugh Bowman in the saddle and having trialled strongly for his return, he should get his chance.

Race 5 - CENTRAL HANDICAP
#6 Chain Of Gold looked progressive last season, culminating in a big first local win, and he should have more to offer this campaign. #12 I Can was ridden conservatively from a wide draw first-up but finished strongly into third at this course and distance. Again drawing wide, he might find a handier position since there isn’t much speed on paper. #3 Samarkand resumed nicely with a narrow second to Helene Warrior. With Purton taking over the reins, he’s a strong contender to be right in the mix. #4 Noble Pursuit is a talent with three wins from ten starts; while he may need further, he can still perform well fresh.

Race 6 - KWUN TONG HANDICAP
#4 Matsu Victor looks one to stick with after winning his first race at this course and distance in fine style last start, despite racing wide from barrier 10. He’ll benefit from stepping away from barrier 1 here, which should ensure a perfect run in transit. #8 Super Unicorn was edging closer to a win before the season ended, and with Purton riding from barrier 2, he should be in the mix. #5 Brave Witness can be followed up on after his maiden win at the end of last season. #10 Gallant Crown raced wide without cover first-up but wasn’t beaten by far; drawing barrier 4 should bring him better luck in the run.

Race 7 - NORTH POINT HANDICAP
#1 Prime Mortar made inroads after transferring to Tony Cruz last season. He was runner-up in his last two races to horses like Packing Hermod, which reads well for a race like this. #2 Aurora Lady ran a promising third behind up-and-comer Packing Power first-up, setting him up well for his second-up run in a race where many are resuming. #6 New Power put together two consecutive wins last season and seems to thrive at this course and distance; barrier 1 will give him every chance. #7 Spicy Gold concluded his season with a solid maiden win, and he may still have points in hand.

Race 8 - CAUSEWAY BAY HANDICAP
#3 Midori Glory burst onto the local scene with an impressive victory at this course and distance in late May. Although he failed to deliver second-up, he looks poised to return in good order after a break and an encouraging trial performance. #1 Youthful Spirits always rates a chance in races like this; his early speed ensures a favourable position, and Purton remaining in the saddle is a plus. #4 O’Liner resumes for a new trainer, Jamie Richards, and benefits from drawing barrier 1; his recent trial win was encouraging. #7 Healthy Healthy is an interesting runner returning on a quick seven-day turnaround; a bit of match fitness could give him an edge, though the wide draw could prove tricky.

Happy Valley Selections

(Wednesday, October 9, 2024)

Race 1: #6 Running Ahead, #1 Go Go Go, #2 Kasa Papa, #7 Right Honourable

Race 2: #2 Speedy Fortune, #1 Parents’ Love, #3 Ace Talent, #4 Good View Glory

Race 3: #7 Super Unicorn, #1 Northern Beast, #2 Flying Wrote, #3 Kimberley

Race 4: #1 King Eccellente, #3 Aurora Lady, #5 Unison, #11 Never Peter Out

Race 5: #5 Gallant Valour, #1 High Percentage, #7 Happy Park, #12 Tactical Command

Race 6: #1 Swift Ascend, #9 Talents Supremo, #3 Nebraskan, #2 King Glorioso

Race 7: #12 I Can, #8 Setanta, #3 M Unicorn, #7 Fighting Machine

Race 8: #11 Chateauneuf, #6 Golden Empire, #1 Reward Smile, #5 Super Joy N Fun

Race 1 - LI YUEN HANDICAP

#6 Running Ahead showed promise on his Class 5 debut over this course and distance, closing strongly into fourth despite a wide draw. Moving to barrier
1 here gives his connections an excellent chance to settle closer to the pace and boost his winning chances. #1 Go Go Go has been ultra-consistent, and with Zac Purton staying aboard from barrier 4, it's tough to see him running a bad race. #2 Kasa Papa is
one to follow now that he drops into Class 5 for the first time. The booking of Hugh Bowman is a key positive, and despite having excuses in Class 4 after a late-season stable switch to Tony Cruz, he's been performing well. #7 Right Honourable, second-up,
signalled that a win could be near with a solid third-place finish. The old boy may still have something to offer here.

Race 2 - MAN CHEUNG HANDICAP

#2 Speedy Fortune could break through as David Eustace’s first winner in Hong Kong. While it’s a competitive race for Class 5, the horse finished last season
in solid form, placing twice at this level on the downgrade. His trials leading into this race have been positive without being fully tested. #1 Parents’ Love signalled his readiness with a close second at this course and distance in his first Class 5 run
last time out. Zac Purton stays aboard, and a maiden victory seems imminent. #3 Ace Talent also has strong claims, especially with the in-form Caspar Fownes and Hugh Bowman partnership combining. The horse's form is consistent and hard to overlook. #4 Good
View Glory was impressive winning at this course and distance two starts ago, but his subsequent run at Sha Tin was below expectations. With the benefit of barrier 1 here, he can bounce back.

Race 3 - MAN YIU HANDICAP

#7 Super Unicorn will be well-fancied as Frankie Lor and Zac Purton team up with this maiden who is overdue for a win. Last time out, he was a luckless
runner-up after racing ungenerously and being steadied at a crucial moment. With barrier 1 in his favour, he looks poised to finally break through. #1 Northern Beast has barrier 11 to contend with, but second-up conditions should suit him better than first-up,
when he was in need of the run. He also reunites with Hugh Bowman at a track he’s had success on. #2 Flying Wrote tries this distance for the first time, but his solid trial form between races suggests he could be a knockout chance. #3 Kimberley has switched
to the Danny Shum stable in the off-season and showed improvement in his trials, so a better performance can be expected.

Race 4 - HARBOUR VIEW HANDICAP

#1 King Eccellente returns to Class 4, where his chances tend to be stronger. He’s a fit horse after two runs this season and has the advantage of Hugh
Bowman taking the reins from a favourable draw in barrier 4. #3 Aurora Lady has been knocking on the door for a win and ran bravely for fourth last time, despite being asked to do too much on the lead. #5 Unison will improve on his second career start here
after gaining valuable experience first-up, and barrier 2 will ensure a smooth run. #11 Never Peter Out makes his seasonal return for a new stable, having switched to Frankie Lor's yard. His best effort came late last season, and with barrier 1, he should
get a comfortable trip.

Race 5 - THE HKEX CUP (HANDICAP)

#5 Gallant Valour turned in a solid fourth-place effort first-up and will benefit from improved fitness. He reunites with Hugh Bowman and draws well in
gate 4, giving him a good chance in this highly competitive race. #1 High Percentage was in stellar form last season, winning two consecutive races by wide margins before a setback. With Zac Purton aboard and barrier 1, he’s well-positioned to return to his
best provided he is back in good health. #7 Happy Park is showing steady improvement and his strong Sha Tin form could transfer well to his first run at Happy Valley. #12 Tactical Command delivered an impressive first-up run, his best effort yet in Class 4,
and he looks capable of continuing to perform in this grade.

Race 6 - HARBOUR VIEW HANDICAP

#1 Swift Ascend presents a strong chance for David Eustace to secure a win, dropping into Class 4 for the first time. His past Class 3 performances should
serve him well here. Though first-up after an eight-month break poses a slight query, Zac Purton in the saddle from a low draw in barrier 3 is a positive. #9 Talents Supremo benefits from another good gate in barrier 1, and if he jumps cleanly, he appears
an honest chance. #3 Nebraskan, a late-fading fifth first-up, looked in need of the run but was only beaten less than two lengths, making him a fitter proposition this time. #2 King Glorioso drops into Class 4 for the first time and has shown improvement in
a recent trial under Hugh Bowman, who rides him on race day. He looks ready to take a step forward.

Race 7 - PEDDER HANDICAP

#12 I Can is presented third-up this week, and a kinder barrier draw in gate 2 works in his favour after drawing no lower than 11 in his last four starts.
Despite this, he continues to run well and was beaten by a strong performer last start—he can atone here. #8 Setanta is a backmarker who relies on luck in running, but if he can utilise barrier 1, his winning chances appear strong, especially as he’s racing
well since his transfer to Mark Newnham’s stable. #3 M Unicorn is better suited back at Happy Valley, where his best form has been. Drawing well in barrier 3, he looks poised to figure in the finish. #7 Fighting Machine will be interesting to watch as he steps
into Class 3 for the first time after an easy win at the top of Class 4. Zac Purton sticks with him, though barrier 11 may prove tricky.

Race 8 - POTTINGER HANDICAP

#11 Chateauneuf remains relatively unexposed as he steps up in class following a narrow defeat in Class 4. Drawing barrier 1 works in his favour, particularly
as many of his main rivals have drawn wide and will require significant early luck. He could just find the necessary favours to secure the win. #6 Golden Empire is a potential knockout chance from barrier 4. Now third-up, he has finished close in both of his
runs this campaign and is expected to put in a competitive performance. #1 Reward Smile had a tough task from barrier 11 first-up but finished strongly into second after being held up for much of the straight. A draw in barrier 10 doesn’t ease his chances
here. #5 Super Joy N Fun is a talented horse with three wins from seven starts and likely hasn’t reached his ceiling yet; however, barrier 12 will make it difficult for him to claim victory.

Sha Tin Selections (Sunday, October 13, 2024)

Race 1: #2 Santorini, #5 Circuit Jolly, #1 Patch Of Cosmo, #9 Northern Fire Ball
Race 2: #8 Super Infinity, #5 Savvy Brilliant, #6 Super Fortune, #2 Captain Win
Race 3: #2 Awesome Fluke, #4 Supreme Agility, #1 Ensued, #3 Packing Hurricane
Race 4: #2 Super Wise Dragon, #13 Cheer For South, #6 Charmander, #3 Yoda’s Choice
Race 5: #3 Thriving Brothers, #5 Endeared, #1 Awesome Treasure, #9 Loving Vibes
Race 6: #14 Chater Gold, #13 Soaring Bronco, #4 Devas Twelve, #5 Family Jewel
Race 7: #4 Galaxy Patch, #8 Chancheng Glory, #5 Red Lion, #6 Straight Arron
Race 8: #7 Jubilant Winner, #2 Sunny Da Best, #11 Team Happy, #1 Stellar Swift
Race 9: #5 Lucy In The Sky, #2 Young Achiever, #3 Beauty Crescent, #6 Silo
Race 10: #6 Wunderbar, #13 Wonderstar, #7 Call Me Glorious, #8 Gorgeous Win

Race 1 - SWIMMING 1200M HANDICAP
#2 Santorini should receive every chance to bounce back and win, especially from barrier 1 with Hugh Bowman taking over the reins. He likely needed his first-up run, and the fast pace close to the lead didn’t suit him. He’s worth another opportunity. #5 Circuit Jolly, a debutant from the David Hayes yard, could make an immediate impact. His trial performances have shown promise, and Zac Purton in the saddle signals readiness for a strong first-up showing. #1 Patch Of Cosmo was ultra-impressive in winning a race of this nature, a Restricted Class 4 for three-year-olds, storming home from a wide draw to win on the line. He looks to have upside. #9 Northern Fire Ball ran boldly on debut, just missing an all-the-way win, and should be competitive again.

Race 2 - ATHLETICS AND JUDO 1200M HANDICAP
#8 Super Infinity steps up to Class 3 after an impressive first-up victory. He still has room for improvement, and his light weight will be an asset as he faces stiffer competition. #5 Savvy Brilliant ran a respectable race on debut over 1000m, finishing well despite early interference and being held up in the final stages. He should prove more competitive second-up. #6 Super Fortune holds a key advantage with his natural early speed, and as the likely leader on paper, he will be tough to reel in. #2 Captain Win brings solid form, having placed behind some talented runners recently, and should find this a slightly easier task.

Race 3 - THE HONG KONG, CHINA'S PARIS 2024 OLYMPIC TEAM CELEBRATION CUP (HANDICAP)
#2 Awesome Fluke returned in strong form when finishing a solid third over a mile, marking his first run for Ricky Yiu. He has proven form over longer trips, making the step up in distance ideal as he seeks a return to winning ways. #4 Supreme Agility is yet to place in five Hong Kong runs, which is surprising given his honest efforts and narrow defeats. Though untested over 2000m, he deserves consideration. #1 Ensued was last seen in the Hong Kong Derby where he raced wide and failed to fire, and resumes from a lengthy break but remains a high-class prospect. #3 Packing Hurricane, second-up over 2000m, will benefit from a more measured ride compared to his first-up effort, where he faded late after doing too much early.

Race 4 - BADMINTON AND CYCLING 1400M HANDICAP
#2 Super Wise Dragon is difficult to catch due to his breathing issues, but he attracts attention first-up for Cody Mo, dropping into Class 5 for the first time. His new stable and class drop could be key factors in sparking improvement. #13 Cheer For South has been underwhelming but hasn't had the best of luck recently. With barrier 1, he'll be afforded every chance to run a more competitive race. #6 Charmander has shown progress since moving to David Hall’s yard, and despite being beaten as the odds-on favourite last start, his second-place finish was solid. He’s a strong contender here back in trip. #3 Yoda’s Choice returns after a quick seven-day turnaround following a promising runner-up effort. While barrier 14 isn't ideal, he's capable of overcoming the wide draw and remains a strong winning prospect in this grade.

Race 5 - FENCING 1200M HANDICAP
#3 Thriving Brothers steps down to Class 4 for the first time in Hong Kong after a commendable first-up effort at the bottom of Class 3, finishing less than a length behind in sixth. While 1400m might be more ideal for him, the drop in class enhances his chances, and the booking of Zac Purton adds further confidence. #5 Endeared is another to consider when dropping in grade. His career has been hindered by poor draws, but he consistently puts in sound performances. #1 Awesome Treasure has drawn gate 10 with 10lb apprentice Britney Wong aboard. They are likely to roll forward and give sight, as usual. #9 Loving Vibes lines up for his second career start, and his debut last season was eye-catching from his wide draw. This time, with a better gate, he should find a handier position in the run and be within striking range to challenge.

Race 6 - SAILING 1600M HANDICAP
#14 Chater Gold showed plenty of merit last start, finishing fourth despite an early check and being held up for a clear run in the straight. From a wide draw, he'll need to be ridden with early intent but is trending towards a win. #13 Soaring Bronco benefits from an inside gate and drops back to a more suitable distance. His recent runs have been encouraging, and he should get the right amount of favours here. #4 Devas Twelve impressed with a first-up win and has plenty of upside. Proven at the mile, he is favoured to win again with some luck from the widest gate. #5 Family Jewel aims for back-to-back course and distance wins, still looking untapped after just four starts.

Race 7 - THE SHA TIN TROPHY (HANDICAP)
#4 Galaxy Patch had an outstanding season last term, culminating in back-to-back G3 Handicap wins. He kicks off this campaign with his sights set on December’s Hong Kong Mile and looks well-positioned to start with a victory. #8 Chancheng Glory benefits from carrying a light weight under handicap conditions, and his tactical speed should see him settle in a handy on-pace position in a race that lacks early speed on paper. #5 Red Lion is another well-placed runner under handicap conditions. While others may still be building fitness for bigger targets later in the season, this is the type of race in which he can figure. #6 Straight Arron makes his first appearance under trainer Ricky Yiu. While he will be looking for more ground, he may be one to spring an upset fresh.

Race 8 - ROWING AND TABLE TENNIS 1400M HANDICAP
#7 Jubilant Winner appears ready to win. He will be well-fancied with Zac Purton taking over after a first-up third and a handy trial in between runs. The rise to 1400m should suit. #2 Sunny Da Best showed promise last season in five starts, though he ended on a low note and was spelled afterward. His trials suggest he's ready to get back on track. #11 Team Happy won easily two starts ago but couldn’t repeat that second-up due to a hot pace. A softer early run should see him bounce back. #1 Stellar Swift produced a career-best effort first-up, charging home for a fast-finishing second. Hugh Bowman takes the reins this time.

Race 9 - TAEKWONDO 1400M HANDICAP
#5 Lucy In The Sky is tough to oppose from barrier 3. He was a game runner-up to up-and-comer Wunderbar first-up and has been highly consistent, recording two wins and four seconds from seven starts. #2 Young Achiever makes his seasonal return after showing promising form last term for the Jamie Richards stable, highlighted by his first local victory in his most recent race. He is one to follow as he progresses further into his campaign. #3 Beauty Crescent has yet to win in 19 Hong Kong starts but has placed behind some top-tier runners recently. With luck from his wide draw, he can figure. #6 Silo is showing steady improvement with more local experience, and his last-start effort pressing the lead was commendable.

Race 10 - ARTISTIC GYMNASTICS AND TRIATHLON 1200M HANDICAP
#6 Wunderbar made a striking return from injury, leading throughout to secure a first-up win in Class 3 carrying top weight. He is a rising talent and looks capable of winning again, especially as he will step away from barrier 1. #13 Wonderstar debuts for leading trainer Pierre Ng. The former Macau galloper has caught the eye in his trials and seems to have what it takes to measure up here. #7 Call Me Glorious needed his first-up run over an unsuitably short 1000m but still managed a close fourth. He should be much more effective stepping up to 1200m second-up. #8 Gorgeous Win resumed impressively, securing an effortless victory in Class 3 under top weight, and he has trialled well since. He appears to be a horse yet to reach his full potential.

Happy Valley Selections

(Wednesday, October 16, 2024)

Race 1: #3 Falcon Court, #1 Hero Star, #5 Speedy Chariot, #12 Wind Speeder
Race 2: #1 Ma Comet, #7 Roaring Bebe, #11 Happy Horse, #5 Silver Spurs
Race 3: #2 Highland Rahy, #8 Foremost Teddy, #6 Can’t Go Wong, #4 Sure Joyful
Race 4: #5 Embraces, #11 Shinkansen, #6 Glory Cloud, #3 Joy Coming
Race 5: #2 Perfect General, #5 Top Scorer, #4 Storming Dragon, #3 Spicy Gold
Race 6: #6 Healthy Healthy, #11 Victor The Rapid, #3 Prawns Eleven, #4 Beauty Infinity
Race 7: #2 Simply Maverick, #3 Frantanck, #4 Chain Of Gold, #7 The Heir
Race 8: #6 Gustosisimo, #5 Kyrus Dragon, #7 Sweet Briar, #8 Young Arrow

Race 1 - SUCCESS HANDICAP
#3 Falcon Court made his Class 5 debut last start from the widest barrier (12) and was ridden back, finishing 10th, but it was a better run than it reads. Coming into barrier 1 here should allow him to race handier, and some of his previous Class 4 runs suggest he has the ability to win this. #1 Hero Star drops back into Class 5, where he has one win from two starts. With Hugh Bowman taking the reins, he poses a serious threat. #5 Speedy Chariot is ready to win since making the class drop; however, the transition from barrier 1 to 12 looks awkward. Still, with Zac Purton in the saddle, he has the right jockey to navigate him. #12 Wind Speeder will benefit from a hot tempo, and his last-start effort was commendable, finishing strongly in sixth.

Race 2 - SWIFTY HANDICAP
#1 Ma Comet looks ready to break through after a solid third-place finish first-up, where he raced wide without cover but still finished less than a length behind the winner. His trial win in between runs was particularly eye-catching, and despite drawing barrier 10, Zac Purton should position him well to ensure he gets a favourable run. #7 Roaring Bebe has been trialling well leading into this race and should enjoy a sweet run under Brenton Avdulla from barrier 3. #11 Happy Horse returns to Happy Valley, where he is more suited, after a respectable effort at Sha Tin. Although his Class 4 record is a concern, his early speed should keep him in contention. #5 Silver Spurs appears to have trained on during the off-season, as his trial performances showed improvement, and from barrier 1, he will have every chance to find the necessary luck in running.

Race 3 - RACING SPIRIT HANDICAP
#2 Highland Rahy should find the switch to Happy Valley beneficial, having produced solid performances in his first two runs this preparation at Sha Tin. He appears ready to take another step forward. #8 Foremost Teddy gets another opportunity here after being defeated as an odds-on favourite last start. Zac Purton retains the ride, which is a positive sign. #6 Can’t Go Wong can improve on his first-up effort, where he was held up for a considerable time in the straight. #4 Sure Joyful, drawn in barrier 1, is well-placed to gain an ideal run, improving his chances in what shapes up to be a highly competitive race.

Race 4 - SPEEDY HANDICAP (Section 2)
#5 Embraces encountered a challenging race last time, finishing less than three lengths behind in seventh place. With Zac Purton taking over the reins and drawing barrier 4, the Jamie Richards-trained four-year-old looks ready to break through. #11 Shinkansen benefits from barrier 1, from where an ideal run just off the pace beckons. His last-start second showed promise. #6 Glory Cloud is ready to win, although barrier 12 will prove tricky. The partnership of Hugh Bowman and Caspar Fownes is always one to respect. #3 Joy Coming steps into this race third-up. Despite a fading 10th last start, he had excuses in running and has the ability to improve here.

Race 5 - SPEEDY HANDICAP (Section 1)
#2 Perfect General secured his first win at his second start last month, and the form held up strongly after the runner-up, Chateauneuf, scored a win in a higher class last week. He appears to be on the rise and should progress beyond Class 4 in due course. #5 Top Scorer makes his Happy Valley debut, while his form at Sha Tin reads well here. Jumping from barrier 3 will also strengthen his chances. #4 Storming Dragon, though overbet first-up, ran a commendable race into third and should offer better value this time, and a win seems imminent. #3 Spicy Gold is chasing a hat-trick of wins for the Mark Newnham stable, but he will need a bit of luck early from a tricky draw, though he remains in good form.

Race 6 - THE LONGINES CUP (HANDICAP)
#6 Healthy Healthy looks poised to return to winning ways third-up. Last time, from a wide draw, he was ridden conservatively but finished strongly into fourth. If positioned closer to the speed as he has in the past, he should be tough to beat. #11 Victor The Rapid had just two runs last season, placing third on debut before a no-show from a poor barrier second-up. His trial win at Happy Valley two trials ago was eye-catching, and a low gate here should serve him well. #3 Prawns Eleven makes his Happy Valley debut and has been running competitively against stronger opposition at Sha Tin, which makes him a contender in this field. #4 Beauty Infinity showed promise during his debut season and, while he may need this run first-up, it wouldn’t be surprising to see him figure in the finish.

Race 7 - SONGS OF VICTORY HANDICAP
#2 Simply Maverick just missed out on victory first-up, finishing second to Star Contact, who franked that form with another strong showing last week. He's maintained his fitness with a quiet trial since and, in a competitive field, looks to be a key player. #3 Frantanck should get a soft lead in this race, which could set him up well to finally secure his first Happy Valley win on his fifth attempt. #4 Chain Of Gold has been the model of consistency, though, his challenge remains his tendency to settle too far back in the field. #7 The Heir is an intriguing runner switching to Happy Valley for the first time after racing solely at Sha Tin, where he has shown ability without winning.

Race 8 - FLYING HANDICAP
#6 Gustosisimo only had two starts last season and performed reasonably well on each occasion, though his second-up run came with a built-in excuse due to mucus in the trachea. Now under the care of Tony Cruz, he seems to have come on over the off-season, and improvement is expected. #5 Kyrus Dragon broke through for his first local win in his final run of last season. He remains a horse with further potential, and Zac Purton taking the ride from barrier 2 stands him as a key contender. #7 Sweet Briar has struggled to win in Class 3 from 11 starts in the grade without success, but his chances are boosted by drawing barrier 1. #8 Young Arrow continues to make progress with each run in Hong Kong after arriving from Singapore, and his last-start third to Brave Star suggests he’s trending in the right direction for this contest.

Race 2: #6 Forerunner, #1 Roman Crown, #9 California Moxie, #2 Fashion Legend
Race 3: #8 Jumbo Fortune, #2 Master Mastermind, #1 Ballistic Win, #12 Yee Cheong Raider
Race 4: #4 Giant Leap, #3 Super Legends, #10 Happy Park, #8 Exceed The Wish
Race 5: #6 Patch Of Theta, #7 Stunning Peach, #5 Flaming Rabbit, #10 Karma
Race 6: #5 Blazing Wind, #2 Courier Aladdin, #1 Harold Win, #7 Monarch County
Race 7: #7 Howdeepisyourlove, #2 Ka Ying Rising, #1 California Spangle, #11 Helios Express
Race 8: #2 Packing Hermod, #12 Super Infinity, #10 Magnificent Nine, #1 I Give
Race 9: #4 Illuminous, #6 Winning Gold, #5 Turin Starspangled, #7 Pray For Mir
Race 10: #4 King Miles, #11 Sky Trust, #2 Prestige Always, #1 Green N White

Race 1 - THE WITH YOU. THEN. NOW. ALWAYS. 1600M HANDICAP
#8 Youth Power is intriguing on the quick back-up, having been narrowly beaten by half a length into fourth behind Charmander last week. Barrier 1 will provide him with every chance in this wide-open contest. #1 Not A Few makes his Class 5 debut, as well as his first start for the David Eustace stable. The booking of Hugh Bowman is significant, and with some luck from barrier 10, he should go close. #13 Red Maverick led too quickly last start, which contributed to him tiring late. He has improved this season and could be poised to sneak into the money at a decent price. #5 Pakistan Friend reunites with Zac Purton, with the pair boasting a perfect 1-for-1 record together.

Race 2 - THE YOU MAKE GOOD POSSIBLE 1400M HANDICAP
#6 Forerunner has been dealt wide draws in his two runs this preparation; still, he performs well and is itching to break through for another win. Trainer Cody Mo calling upon Zac Purton, teaming up for just the second time this season, makes a strong case. #1 Roman Crown drops into Class 4 and can start to be followed. His last-start 10th is better than it reads, as he was unable to be fully tested late. #9 California Moxie will wear blinkers for the first time. He was eye-catching in his last-start effort and looks ready to take another step forward here. #2 Fashion Legend makes his stable debut for trainer David Eustace while also dropping to Class 4, which should see him improve.

Race 3 - THE COMMUNITY GROWTH 1400M HANDICAP
#8 Jumbo Fortune performed very well first-up for the Eustace stable, narrowly missing out on victory after encountering traffic problems in the straight. He appears ready to win. #2 Master Mastermind put it all together last start and secured his win. He should be able to build on that performance, but the wide barrier raises some concerns. However, Zac Purton is the man for the job. #1 Ballistic Win will receive a perfect run from his low draw, with Hugh Bowman taking over the reins. He can bounce back to form after a last-start no-show. #12 Yee Cheong Raider finished strongly into second first-up. Although he has an awkward draw to overcome, he will be making his presence felt late.

Race 4 - THE STRIDING ON TOGETHER 1200M HANDICAP
#4 Giant Leap was an impressive all-the-way winner in his final run of last season but resumed with excuses after rearing at the start, never posing a threat. He has since been sent back to the trials, where he caught the eye, and a clean jump from barrier 1 will see him hard to beat. He deserves another chance. #3 Super Legends posted an easy second-up win last start, leading from pillar to post, and will vie to repeat the dose. #10 Happy Park continues to improve with each outing and can take another positive step forward here. #8 Exceed The Wish makes his debut for trainer Mark Newnham. His trials have shown he has ability, but an outer alley isn’t ideal for his first assignment.

Race 5 - THE HKJC 140TH ANNIVERSARY CUP (HANDICAP)
#6 Patch Of Theta just missed out on a return victory first-up over 1400m under a slow tempo, where the leader proved hard to gun down. He tests the mile for the first time here, which shouldn’t pose a problem given his relaxed nature. #7 Stunning Peach created a lasting impression in three runs last campaign. He kicks off his 4YO Classic Series aspirations here, and while the mile may be the shortest distance he desires, he should finish strongly late. #5 Flaming Rabbit is set to find the front, and if left alone, he will give this group something to chase. #10 Karma rises to his best distance second-up after a solid third on resuming. He has since won a trial heat strongly between runs and looks in fine fettle.

Race 6 - THE INSPIRING COMMUNITY 1200M HANDICAP
#5 Blazing Wind flashed home late to finish a close second to Harold Win last start, missing out by a head. He should test their mettle, especially with the advantage of barrier 1, while key rivals will require luck from their wide draws. #2 Courier Aladdin is an untapped talent, having debuted with a lasting first-up win last term. He looks destined for better things but will need plenty of luck from the outermost alley. #1 Harold Win, wearing saddle cloth number 1 in this field, comes off his breakthrough success last time. Despite carrying extra weight, he should feature prominently again. #7 Monarch County has shown steady improvement in his trials leading up to his debut for the Caspar Fownes yard; it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him run a strong race first-up.

Race 7 - GROUP 2 THE PREMIER BOWL (HANDICAP)
#7 Howdeepisyourlove slots in nicely on a favourable weight under handicap conditions. He’s capable of causing a boilover, as he did when downing Galaxy Patch five starts ago, especially with the benefit of a low draw. #2 Ka Ying Rising will need some luck from his draw. He aims for his second big-race success while competing at G2 level for the first time. Facing stiffer competition with California Spangle in the mix, he benefits from a seven-pound allowance off the top weight. #1 California Spangle kicks off his campaign, rejuvenated as a sprinter last term. He’ll be tough to wear down in the straight. #11 Helios Express resumes off his 4YO Classic Series campaign, where he won the first two legs. The best distance for him remains unclear, but 1200m should be a solid starting point this term.

Race 8 - THE SHARED PROSPERITY 1200M HANDICAP
#2 Packing Hermod has drawn horribly wide for his return. However, he is one of Hong Kong’s most exciting up-and-comers after stringing two big-margin wins together last term and appears to hold a class edge on his rivals. Trainer Francis Lui has high ambitions for this four-year-old, setting his sights on the 4YO Classic Mile as one of his main targets this season. #12 Super Infinity has the advantage of barrier 1. He returns to the races on a 7-day turnaround after a luckless run in defeat, where he was slow to begin, which dashed his chances. He still performed well, closing strongly into fourth. #10 Magnificent Nine went close to winning in eight local starts last season. John Size appears to have him in good form for his return, and his placings behind some smart types have him well positioned here. #1 I Give will find the front as he likes to do and will give a sight, but fitness may be telling late.

Race 9 - THE CREATIVE SPIRIT 1600M HANDICAP
#4 Illuminous will be a fitter proposition second-up, having finished a promising runner-up first-up despite encountering traffic in the straight. This is one of the most competitive races on the card, but he gets the nod. #6 Winning Gold aims for a fourth consecutive win. He steps up to the mile, which should not pose a problem, but barrier 1 could be a concern if he finds himself hemmed in turning for home. #5 Turin Starspangled is a horse on the rise. The UK-bred three-year-old resumed at this course and distance with a one-length victory—his first try over a mile—and relished the distance. Further progression will put him on a Classic Series path. #7 Pray For Mir can be followed up on after his last-start win. Trainer Cody Mo has the Classic Series in mind for this improving four-year-old.

Race 10 - THE LOVE RACING 1400M HANDICAP
#4 King Miles drew wide in barrier 11 first-up and raced three-wide throughout. Jockey Vincent Ho noted that his run came to an end late due to a lack of fitness; however, he was only beaten two lengths into seventh. Ready to rebound. #11 Sky Trust is an impressive four-year-old making inroads with more racing. He steps up into Class 3 off an effortless Class 4 win and has plenty more to offer. #2 Prestige Always won his first local race last start in fighting fashion. The Irish-bred three-year-old will be on track to contest the 4YO Classic Series if he continues on an upward trend. #1 Green N White is a model of consistency. He is first-up since March due to injury and may need the run.

Luke Middlebrook's tips for Sha Tin on Wednesday, October 23, 2024

Race 1: #1 Go Go Go, #4 Fruity Warrior, #3 Nice Birdie, #5 Fury And Gol
Race 2: #4 High Rise Power, #7 Gallant Goody, #11 Patch Of Watch, #8 Super Joy
Race 3: #2 Floof, #7 Lucky Banner, #6 Hakka Radiance, #3 Only U
Race 4: #1 Galvanic, #4 Snowalot, #11 Reliable Profit, #2 Forever Folks
Race 5: #7 Always Fluke, #4 Fun N Fun Together, #1 Bowser, #8 Hinokami Kagura
Race 6: #8 Holy Power, #1 Golden Long, #9 Robot Knight, #5 Jolly Companion
Race 7: #5 Talents Ambition, #2 Turin Mascot, #4 Perfect Team, #7 Fighting Machine
Race 8: #1 Capital Delight, #2 Victory Moments, #4 Super Win Dragon, #7 Self Improvement

Race 1 - HEBE HILL HANDICAP
#1 Go Go Go has been racing consistently for a Class 5 horse this season. With the benefit of barrier 1 and Zac Purton remaining in the saddle, this race looks his for the taking. #4 Fruity Warrior has been itching to win his first race this season after two promising second-place finishes. Third-up now, he should be primed for this. #3 Nice Birdie receives a jockey upgrade with Hugh Bowman taking over the reins from a 10-lb claiming apprentice, which will help his chances on his second attempt back in Class 5, where he performs better. #5 Fury And Gold donned blinkers for the first time last start and showed improvement in the headgear during a trial leading into the race; however, he raced wide and had excuses. He is capable of improving further here.

Race 2 - SHEK UK SHAN HANDICAP
#4 High Rise Power is ready to win after his last-start third at this course and distance. Barrier 2 will provide a perfect run in a race with good speed engaged, and the recent stable change to Dennis Yip has sparked improvement. #7 Gallant Goody gets Zac Purton in the saddle from barrier 3. He has been a steady improver since dropping into Class 5 and looks ready to get into the money here. #11 Patch Of Watch is an interesting runner, as he continues to win trials by big margins but is yet to show up on race day. His chances should improve back in distance and with a better-judged ride here. #8 Super Joy can be slow to start, which is why he has placed more than won, but if the pace is on to suit, he will be making a late bid.

Race 3 - TIN HA SHAN HANDICAP
#2 Floof won well two starts ago, his first under the care of Ricky Yiu, but he was forced to work hard from a wide draw last time and faded in the straight. Hugh Bowman riding from barrier 2 checks plenty of boxes for him to rebound. #7 Lucky Banner appears to get a soft lead here, ensuring he has every chance to bounce back after a 574-day break between wins. #6 Hakka Radiance is getting close to victory, evidenced by his last-start second-place finish at this course and distance. #3 Only U is improving after sliding down the ratings; coming into a low draw after a handy run from a wide position last time is in his favour.

Race 4 - TIN HA SHAN HANDICAP
#1 Galvanic is easy to like here; he returns to Class 4, where he is best performed, receives a jockey upgrade with Hugh Bowman in the plate, and has drawn ideally in barrier 2 against modest competition. #4 Snowalot tries the all-weather for the first time, but that shouldn't pose a problem. Zac Purton will hop back in the saddle and combines with an in-form David Hayes, which bodes well for his chances. #11 Reliable Profit broke through for his first win in fine style in Class 5 last start. Despite the rise in class, he has a nice low gate in his favour to ensure he maps a chance. #2 Forever Folks is a reliable course and distance performer and remains in good order after his last-start course and distance win.

Race 5 - THE JCI HONG KONG SENATE CUP (HANDICAP)
#7 Always Fluke was well supported first-up but encountered trouble at the 100m mark. He has since moved to Mark Newnham’s stable and trialled decently over this course and distance, so he may improve with the stable change and bounce back for a win. #4 Fun N Fun Together will be well supported with Zac Purton aboard from barrier 2. He brings strong form into this event and looks ready to win if the race pans out in his favour. #1 Bowser is trending towards another victory, and his first-up effort from a wide draw was full of promise. #8 Hinokami Kagura has had several chances to break his maiden after 10 starts, but he should still be in the mix here.

Race 6 - TIU YUE YUNG HANDICAP
#8 Holy Power resumed down the 1000m Sha Tin straight and finished a luckless seventh, beaten just over five lengths after being badly held up in the closing stages. He has trialled well since and may relish this course and distance on his first attempt, especially with Zac Purton aboard from barrier 3. #1 Golden Long showed ability last season, but it ended on a sour note when he bled. Resuming, he has looked well in his trials, and trying this course and distance for the first time seems to suit him perfectly. #9 Robot Knight last raced on turf and ran a decent race, but his chances improve back on dirt. He holds form with a nice trial win in between runs. #5 Jolly Companion will give a sight from gate 2. He surprised at a price at this course and distance last start and may have found his niche here.

Race 7 - TSIM MEI FUNG HANDICAP
#5 Talents Ambition resumed over 1200m, which is short of his best, but finished strongly into third after jumping from barrier 10. Mark Newnham has him in fine shape for this race, having sent him back to the trials where he won his heat impressively, and he looks the one to beat from barrier 3. #2 Turin Mascot drops back to Class 3, which should make this a more manageable assignment. His first-up effort, when third behind a dominant Sword Point, showed he’s in good form. #4 Perfect Team has been close up in two turf runs this season and now switches to his preferred surface, which should give him a better chance. #7 Fighting Machine stepped up to Class 3 for the first time last start, running a fast-finishing fourth from a wide gate, and again has to overcome a tricky draw from barrier 11.

Race 8 - WA MEI SHAN HANDICAP
#1 Capital Delight should benefit from dropping back to 1200m after a forgivable run over the extended mile last start, where he was held up for much of the straight but still managed to put in an honest effort. A fast-run race here will suit his pattern. #2 Victory Moments is well-placed with the return to Class 3 and to this course and distance, where he has been remarkably consistent, only missing the top three once in seven starts. He’s a big chance if he gets luck from barrier 11. #4 Super Win Dragon, who defeated Capital Delight when first-up, has trialled well since and is ideally drawn to go close again from barrier 2. #7 Self Improvement was in need of his first-up run after doing too much work from a wide gate; expect him to improve here.

Luke Middlebrook's Happy Valley ~ Wednesday, November 20, 2024

Happy Valley Selections (Wednesday, November 20, 2024)

Race 1: #5 Falcon Court, #10 Medic Elite, #9 Cool Blue, #7 Invincible Missile
Race 2: #4 Apolar Fighter, #10 Ninja Derby, #1 Harmony Galaxy, #2 Sturdy Ruby
Race 3: #2 Ruby Sailing, #5 Verbier, #1 Cosmo Navigator, #3 Winning Heart
Race 4: #12 Gluck Racer, #4 Can’t Go Wong, #5 Foremost Teddy, #11 Courier Magic
Race 5: #2 Storming Dragon, #1 Triumphant More, #11 Speed Sword, #9 Lucky Man
Race 6: #5 Telecom Dragon, #1 Motoman, #4 Yee Cheong Spirit, #9 Fun N Glory
Race 7: #12 Super Unicorn, #9 Soleil Fighter, #7 Silo, #2 Simply Maverick
Race 8: #7 Raging Blizzard, #6 Gorgeous Win, #4 Lucky Encounter, #1 Son Pak Fu
Race 9: #3 Eason, #8 Romantic Son, #2 Young Emperor, #4 Gustosisimo

Race 1 - LAU FAU SHAN HANDICAP
#5 Falcon Court has been unlucky in recent runs since dropping into Class 5, though his performances have shown merit. With Zac Purton taking the reins this week, he gains a key jockey switch that boosts his chances. #10 Medic Elite benefits from barrier 2 and is always competitive over this course and distance. #9 Cool Blue has to overcome an outside gate, but his recent efforts since joining Cody Mo’s yard have been promising. #7 Invincible Missile returns to his preferred track after two outings at Sha Tin and is capable of showing improvement.

Race 2 - YUEN LONG HANDICAP
#4 Apolar Fighter should enjoy a much kinder run stepping away from barrier 2 this week after racing wide without cover last time, where he was unable to pose a threat. #10 Ninja Derby gets a notable jockey upgrade with Zac Purton aboard. His last-start fourth carried merit, considering he raced wide and without cover until the 800m, was allowed to stride forward, and raced outside the lead before fading late due to the early work. #1 Harmony Galaxy produced his best performance to date when runner-up to Capital Legend last start and looks set to continue improving. #2 Sturdy Ruby faces a tougher task after stepping out from barrier 1 to 10 following his breakthrough win in fine style last time.

Race 3 - KAI TAK HANDICAP
#2 Ruby Sailing remains winless after 15 starts, but he benefits this week from a class drop into Class 5. Zac Purton takes the reins, and from a good gate, he should improve second-up after a decent effort when well-backed first-up at the bottom of Class 4. #5 Verbier has been knocking on the door for a win, and his trial between runs indicates he has maintained his condition. With Hugh Bowman aboard, his chances are strong. #1 Cosmo Navigator signalled readiness to win after a narrow third-place finish last time. #3 Winning Heart will map well from barrier 2, such as his first effort in Class 5, where he gamely finished third last start.

Race 4 - KWU TUNG HANDICAP
#12 Gluck Racer is more than capable on his day, and he shapes as a good each-way chance here, being third-up and well-drawn in barrier 1. If he can capitalise on his inside gate, he should be within striking range in what is a wide-open contest. #4 Can’t Go Wong appeals with his consistency, although he doesn’t win often. #5 Foremost Teddy endured a tough run from a wide gate last time, covering extra ground early. With a slightly better draw, he can improve on that effort. #11 Courier Magic has been finishing strongly in recent starts despite wide draws, and an inside gate this time should help his chances further.

Race 5 - THE HK INSTITUTE OF SURVEYORS 40TH ANNIVERSARY CUP (HANDICAP)
#2 Storming Dragon was narrowly denied victory last start and is poised to break through for a well-overdue win, especially with James McDonald aboard and a favourable midfield draw. #1 Triumphant More impressed on debut with a smart win and should continue to progress. Barrier 8 poses a challenge, but Zac Purton retains the ride, which boosts confidence. #11 Speed Sword showed improvement on his first run for Mark Newnham last time out, although barrier 12 makes things tricky; expect him to be charging home late. #9 Lucky Man is gradually improving and looked sharp in a trial between runs. Despite a wide draw, he could be dangerous late if the race sets up with a strong pace.

Race 6 - SAN TIN HANDICAP
#5 Telecom Dragon delivered an excellent first-up effort to finish a close third. He should be in the mix again with barrier 3 and Hugh Bowman in the saddle. #1 Motoman faded to 10th last start after leading at a fast tempo, though he was only beaten just over four lengths. With barrier 1 and Zac Purton aboard, he is well placed to finish in the frame. #4 Yee Cheong Spirit ran a strong second last start from barrier 1, but had every chance to win. While barrier 9 makes this tougher, the booking of James McDonald adds confidence. #9 Fun N Glory has been racing well since moving to David Hall’s yard and will relish a fast pace, where he will be making his presence felt late.

Race 7 - HUNG SHUI KIU HANDICAP
#12 Super Unicorn deserves another chance after being beaten as the odds-on favourite in his first Class 3 run last time. He shapes as a better betting proposition this week. #9 Soleil Fighter has been edging closer to a win, and his recent second to Daring Pursuit signals he’s ready to go very close here in a wide-open contest. #7 Silo stormed home into second behind Voyage Samurai over a mile at Sha Tin last start, solid form for a race like this, and is primed for a breakthrough. #2 Simply Maverick was on pace in a fast-run race second-up and understandably weakened late. The wide draw is far from ideal, but James McDonald’s guiding him offers some hope.

Race 8 - CHEK LAP KOK HANDICAP
#7 Raging Blizzard resumed with a very promising third-place finish behind Copartner Prance. He peaked on his run around the 50m mark, indicating there’s plenty of improvement to come as he progresses this preparation. #6 Gorgeous Win was backed into favouritism in that race but endured a luckless run, racing very wide without cover throughout. Despite this, he was only beaten just under four lengths, a commendable effort. #4 Lucky Encounter possesses early speed to secure a handy position from barrier 2, and his last-start second to Copartner Prance suggests he’s poised to return to winning ways. #1 Son Pak Fu showed encouraging improvement in a recent trial and will relish a fast-run race, which appears likely here. Look for him to be charging home late.

Race 9 - FANLING HANDICAP
#3 Eason turned in an eye-catching first-up performance on his debut for trainer Ricky Yiu, running third after racing very wide without cover. With barrier 2 this time, he maps as the winner. #8 Romantic Son showed plenty of promise on debut, finishing just half a length behind in second. He looks primed to go one better with natural improvement. #2 Young Emperor was ultra-impressive on debut, defeating Romantic Son in style. He shapes as a serious prospect and benefits from a kinder draw in gate 3. #4 Gustosisimo jumped only fairly last start and couldn’t muster early speed but closed well for fourth after being held up on the turn. While he has barrier 10 to overcome, his strong form bodes well.

Happy Valley Selections (Wednesday, November 27, 2024)

Race 1: #1 Me Time, #11 Sunny Baby, #8 Turtle Again, #2 Go Go Go
Race 2: #2 Speedy Fortune, #1 Modest Gentleman, #7 Circuit Ten, #4 Happy Horse
Race 3: #1 Handsome Bomb, #10 Dragon Delight, #8 To Infinity, #4 Happy Again
Race 4: #6 Affordable, #1 Charity Gain, #9 Management Folks, #4 Perfect Pairing
Race 5: #5 Fatal Blow, #2 The Perfect Match, #4 Glory Cloud, #11 Gimme Five
Race 6: #8 Roaring Bebe, #3 Golden Rise, #1 Gallant Valour, #5 New Power
Race 7: #4 Lightning Bolt, #3 Colonel, #2 Lyrical Motion, #9 Telecom Power
Race 8: #6 Allgreektome, #4 Horsepower, #10 Happy United, #7 Eternal Fortune
Race 9: #5 Illuminous, #3 Samarkand, #9 Sharpen Bright, #4 Chain Of Gold

Race 1 - BRIDGE OF WEIR HANDICAP

#1 Me Time is tough to oppose in this contest. Making his Class 5 debut, he started favourite two runs ago in Class 4 after a solid second-place finish to Joy Of Spring, which is strong form here. With Zac Purton in the saddle and a favourable low draw, he’s the one to beat. #11 Sunny Baby has lost form recently but returns to his preferred track and distance. With barrier 1 in his favour, he’s capable of bouncing back. #8 Turtle Again hasn’t won in a year, though his last-start third suggests he’s ready to capitalise when conditions suit. #2 Go Go Go may take up the running under the 10lb apprentice claim in a race lacking natural pace, and he could potentially steal the race with a soft lead.

Race 2 - CRAMOND ISLAND HANDICAP

#2 Speedy Fortune has been racing well since joining David Eustace and receives blinkers third-up, following an encouraging trial in the headgear. From his low draw, he looks well-placed to secure a win for the freshman trainer. #1 Modest Gentleman drops back into Class 5 for his third run this preparation and reunites with Jerry Chau, who guided him to his last victory. #7 Circuit Ten has tumbled down the ratings. He’s been edging closer to a win, and if he can utilise barrier 1 early, his chances of breaking through in Hong Kong are much improved. #4 Happy Horse also benefits from a drop back into Class 5, where his two career wins have occurred.

Race 3 - RAEBURN PLACE HANDICAP

#1 Handsome Bomb has been on the pace in two fast-run races this preparation and was entitled to tire late. Trying Happy Valley for the first time, his solid Sha Tin form makes him a leading chance in this moderate Class 4 event. #10 Dragon Delight remains winless in this grade after 11 attempts, though he has managed four third-place finishes, including his latest run. From a favourable low draw, he should get his chance. #8 To Infinity, drawn in barrier 1, might settle closer in the run, which will be helpful in a contest lacking depth. #4 Happy Again made a respectable debut and is expected to show natural improvement with further experience.

Race 4 - BEN NEVIS HANDICAP

#6 Affordable catches the eye. While winless from 11 starts in Hong Kong, he finished strongly into fourth over 2000m last time and now benefits from James McDonald in the saddle. The step up in trip suits, given his Australian form includes wins up to 2100m and placings over 2550m. #1 Charity Gain is a progressive four-year-old building a solid record. After a comfortable win two starts ago, he backed it up with a strong third. #9 Management Folks is primed to bounce back with Zac Purton aboard for the first time since July last year. His first-up effort at Sha Tin was solid, though he’s proven much better at Happy Valley, particularly over this trip. #4 Perfect Pairing never got a clear run last start but had more to offer. He’s capable of producing a better showing at an each-way price.

Race 5 - THE ST ANDREW'S CHALLENGE QUAICH (HANDICAP)

#5 Fatal Blow ticks plenty of boxes after a promising debut third and subsequent strong trial where he wasn’t pressured. Expect significant improvement second-up for the Mark Newnham stable. #2 The Perfect Match gets a favourable draw in barrier 2 with James McDonald aboard, and the removal of blinkers reads well. #4 Glory Cloud is poised for a breakthrough win, having narrowly missed last time out. However, barrier 9 presents a potential map challenge this time. #11 Gimme Five was sent back to the trials following a lacklustre last outing but had shown good form prior, finishing second to Swift Ascend, who has since franked the form with another win at Sha Tin on Sunday.

Race 6 - EDINBURGH HANDICAP

#8 Roaring Bebe could only manage sixth as the favourite last start, but the saddle slipping during the race left his rider at a disadvantage. Based on prior strong form and with barrier 1 in his favour, he deserves another chance. #3 Golden Rise endured a tough trip last time, caught wide without cover from the 600m, yet finished just two lengths off the winner. #1 Gallant Valour scored impressively two starts ago but had no favours last time after a slow start, closing strongly for fourth. A cleaner getaway should see him bounce back. #5 New Power adds blinkers for the first time and maps to settle in a handy on-pace position, where he will be given every opportunity.

Race 7 - EDINBURGH HANDICAP

#4 Lightning Bolt looks primed to strike again. Fourth-up, he has dropped enough in the ratings to make his mark at this level. James McDonald takes over after a solid fourth on the all-weather, and a trial win between runs adds to the appeal. #3 Colonel continues to defy his age with excellent form for the Mark Newnham stable. If left to dictate from the front, he will prove difficult to peg back. #2 Lyrical Motion faces a tough task from barrier 12, but his form holds up for this race, especially with Hugh Bowman returning to the saddle. #9 Telecom Power has been charging home late in his recent runs, but he will need to position closer to the pace to be a serious contender.

Race 8 - LOCH LOMOND HANDICAP

#6 Allgreektome maps to get a dream run from barrier 1. He has been working towards another win and finds plenty in his favour this week. #4 Horsepower impressed on debut, scoring smartly over this course and distance for Frankie Lor with Zac Purton aboard. While drawn wide in gate 11, the stats suggest it’s less of a disadvantage over 1000m with the rail in the C+3 position. #10 Happy United endured a tough trip resuming from gate 11 last time and can improve significantly on that 11th-place finish with a better run anticipated. #7 Eternal Fortune, now at his fourth local start, looks poised to break through after consecutive placings. James McDonald has a tricky task from barrier 12, however.

Race 9 - INVERNESS HANDICAP

#5 Illuminous, with James McDonald in the saddle and barrier 1 for the second time in succession, might settle closer in the run this time, which could help him turn his fortune around after several eye-catching efforts. #3 Samarkand had valid excuses last time after blundering in the straight and weakening. With little pace on paper, he looks well-suited to take control from barrier 3 and dictate terms upfront. #9 Sharpen Bright is building a strong record and was impressive winning on his first try in Class 3 over this course and distance. He looks capable of repeating the performance. #4 Chain Of Gold has been knocking on the door for a second local win, placing in all three starts this season. However, Zac Purton will need to work some magic from gate 12.
