Default Spectacular Bid's walkover Woodward

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b9JYy...eature=related

Just saw this for the first time. Wow. He hit that time without anybody else there, astonishing. There's commentary at the beginning and end of the clip. The last bit is interesting because they're asking Denny Phipps about some things, like how instead of breeding to race it seems like they're racing to get breeders. This in 1980. Anyway, enjoy. Hard not to be in awe of a horse like this. I could say they don't make'em like this anymore, but I'm not sure they really made them like this before he came along either.

Was there a story that surrounded the race? Did horses scratch or nobody else entered?

I ask because, I just find it amazing that CBS still carried the walkover on TV and these days networks don't show any kind of major race outside the TC. I guess it's just another sign of how far the sport has fallen.

Temperence Hill and Dr. Patches were scratched from the field.

edit: Winter's Tale was an early scratch

Thanks, I was wondering the same thing. I had thought from this clip that Winter's Tale had broken down or something, but that didn't seem quite right. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winter's_Tale_(horse) He died in 2002 at age 26. So did WT have shin problems before the Woodward or was that a separate physical situation?

The Friday before the race, his trainer felt something wrong and x-rays showed a chip in his leg.

good info here:

http://www.horsehats.com/SpectacularBid.html

Quote:
"Bid would sit out the Marlboro Cup while the nice Mack Miller-trained colt, Winter's Tale, won the coveted race. Next on both's schedule was the Woodward. Winter's Tale won the Marlboro in commanding fashion and was working beautifully leading up to the Woodward - again, the press and fans wondered if an upset of the great Spectacular Bid was possible. But the Friday before the race, Miller felt something wrong with his charge and x-rays showed a chip in his leg. Winter's Tale was scratched from the race, leaving only a three-horse field of Spectacular Bid, Temperence Hill, and Dr. Patches. On Saturday morning of the Woodward, NYRA officials met with the trainers and owners of Temperence Hill and Dr. Patches, and the two horses were scratched from the field. Spectacular Bid, in what some deem racing's greatest honor from other trainers, was granted a walkover. "

Thank you for sharing Merlinsky

I've mentioned before that I was on the track apron at the Gulfstream Park finish line the day Spectacular Bid won The Florida Derby. Despite the rider.

I noted one of the YouTube comments on your walkover share mentioned they had always looked for a replay of that Florida Derby race. I have, too. I watched the race real time, but never a replay.

I counted at least three, maybe four, times that the rider got Spectacular Bid stopped in that Florida Derby.

Of course the rider was just a kid then.

Spectacular Bid made them both winners, though.

I would love to see a replay of that Florida Derby, Cordero and the other jocks, boxed in The Bid and The Kid at least 4 times, it was probably one of The Bid's best races, I think he still won by 4. He was The greatest Horse I have ever seen, and to this day over 30 yrs later, not one horse that has run, can close to this magnificent animal..........

I was living in Miami at the time, and in those Miami "pre-South Beach" years there was lots much local hype for Spectacular Bid.

Oh, and just so I can be cited for a 30+ year old redboard, I was in Miami when jockey Walter Guerra was riding with a bug.

I knew he was good, early on.

So I bet him.

And did more than OK as he became better known.

Of course I didn't make much money in those days, so I didn't have big scores.

Probably I looked like one of those "That 70's Show" characters as I approached the $10 windows in Miami.....
