tim hetherington who directed this really fine documentary on the experience of foot soldiers in afghanistan was killed in libya yesterday.

it was nominated for an oscar last year. i heard some criticism of the movie as lacking a political viewpoint which i thought was it's strength. hetherington remained in touch with many of the soldiers he filmed.

there's a particularly difficult scene where he filmed the aftermath of the death of a squad leader in combat. i heard an interview today with one of the soldiers who was there.

i don't know how to communicate what was said without coming off as overly maudlin but the film is available as a download on netflix. if you have a subscription do yourself a favor and watch it.

I watched this last night and really enjoyed it. Incredibly well done documentary. One thing I noticed, and you read about it a lot in the media, is the terrain of the land being beyond difficult and mountainous. It was amazing to see, actually.

The other interesting part was the difference in how some of the soldiers reacted to someone in their battalion being KIA.

I watched it last night too. . . Very good, and I agree that the lack of a political viewpoint was one of its best attributes.
