Default 4/5: Aqueduct ($27 C/O); Santa Anita (3rd-8th)

In the long run, Wednesday's $106 P4 isn't going to make or break the 2012 ledger, but I'm still annoyed that I missed the play. The way Jacobson continues to send out formful horses, it was foolhardy to omit Saginaw from the ticket in the 8th. Saginaw was much the best, though Alan Garcia approached the race timidly on favorite Joan's Choice. When Think I'm Hooked SCR'd from the 6th, the opportunity was there to add Saginaw, but I feared Misslewhileuwork getting loose in the sequence starter and subbed him instead. I need not have worried as the Galluscio trainee broke on top and stopped after a half. The two turf maiden events produced mundane winners in $10 Penthouse Party and $4.20 Shaun Washington, so the possibility of a big payoff evaporated, but a $27k carryover is out there Thursday thanks to healthy prices winning the 4th and 5th. Santa Anita has a terrific sequence of races too that I felt compelled to 'cap.

AQUEDUCT

POST-SCRATCHES

4th: MSW, F&M-3+, 1m-T (P6, P3, DD, Super)

$27k C/O starts here..

Favored Preach Tome Daddy is OK, but not that much more likely than some of the lawn returnees or dirt to turf movers. Tough start to difficult P6 sequence..

Most Likely: #7 Party of Interest 3-1 3rd
Best Value: #5 Tahima 12-1 8th
Next Best: #3 Preach Tome Daddy 5-2 WON ($4.60)
Exotics Use: #4 Thisizsparta 4-1 2nd

5th: NY-OC/N2X, 3+, 1m (G/S, P3, DD, Super)

Very difficult set with three speedy ML faves and a possible pick-up-the-pieces type in 12-1 This Hard Land. 3yo Panthro and 9yo Ruffino return in new barns having been acquired for $75k and $14k respectively..

Most Likely: #5 Moonlight Song 3-1 5th
Next Best: #7 Panthro 5-2 3rd
Best Value: #4 This Hard Land 12-1 2nd
Exotics Use: #1 Ruffino 2-1 4th

6th: CLM/N2L, F&M-3+, 1m-T (P3, DD, Super)

Another mindbender with generally non-descript cast. Easiest possible approach to this would be #11 (AE) Viv's Tiara drawing in (Does draw in). After that, good luck. Some sidebars include Beppj (12-1) going 2nd route and to lawn where full brother Mr. Hooker and full sister Sister Berta both won with mid-70's Beyers. Twillerbee, making her turf bow, is a half to Thisizsparta who runs an hour earlier. Style Watch is first off the claim by Repole who cleverly gave her back to original trainer Carlos Martin. Carlos trained the dam On the Catwalk for the late Carl Lizza and lost this filly in the Flying Zee dispersal. On the Catwalk won her 4 races on the turf and you would expect Martin wants to do well immediately for Repole and lures Castellano..

Most Likely: #11 Viv's Tiara 3-1 WON ($6.60)
Next Best: #7 Style Watch 8-1 5th
Best Value: #9 Beppj 12-1 8th
Exotics Use: #3 Katy's Office Girl 7-2 3rd

7th: CLM/N2L, F&M-3+, 6f (P3, DD, Super)

Our own enigmatic Dee Tee filly Ausable Chasm included in this cast and with as much speed as there is signed on, hoping she can pick up some pieces late and boost the tri/super. Rudy Rod entry looks tough to beat with the good bug boys aboard..

Most Likely: #1 My Sydney Girl 2-1 5th
Next Best: #5 Nolita 5-2 2nd
Exotics Use: #7 Soldierette 4-1 WON ($11.00)
Super Add: #6 Ausable Chasm 30-1 4th

8th: CLM, 4+, 1m-T (DD, Super)

Yet another scramble with the faves very respectable and Cause I Can intriguing..

Most Likely: #9 Desert Wheat 2-1 2nd
Best Value: #2 Cause I Can 12-1 4th
Next Best: #4 Good Prospect 5-2 WON ($7.90)
Exotics Use: #3 East Indies 5-1 5th

9th: CLM/N2L, 3+, 6.5f (Super)

Call First will be a heavy favorite but doesn't have to win. Outside pair command attention and Joburg Star scares moving to Jacobson..

Most Likely: #3 Call First 5-2 3rd
Best Value: #6 Joberg Star 6-1 4th
Next Best: #11 Prince Majestic 4-1 WON ($11.40)
Exotics Use: #10 Bomber Boy 7-2 7th

<$150 P6 Play:

4: 3-4-5-7
5: 4-5-7
6: 7-11
7: 1
8: 9
9: 3-6-11

4x3x2x1x1x3 = 72 x $2 = $144

<$75/<$36 P4 Play:

6: 7-11
7: 1-5-6-7
8: 2-4-9
9: 3-6-11

2x4x3x3 = $72 ($36 for .50)

$1 Pick 4 (6/11/12-7-4-11) Paid $632.00 ($316 for .50)

SANTA ANITA

POST-SCRATCHES

3rd: ALW/N1X, 3yo-F, 6.5f-T (P6, P3, DD, Super)

Very nice group with 4 of them already winners down the hill..

Most Likely: #7 Belle Passe 7-2 WON ($4.80)
Next Best: #1 Hidinginplainsight 7-2 2nd
Exotics Use: #5 Vegas Babe 9-2 5th

4th: MSW, 3yo-F, 6f (P3, DD, Super)

First time starters -- which is what FTS means when you see it -- and 2nd timers and some nicely bred ones too. Baffert brings back Giant's Causeway daughter of House of Fortune, #7 Splendid Fortune, while Sadler debuts Sweet Results, full sister to Clubhouse Ride..

Most Likely: #7 Splendid Fortune 8-5 WON ($2.80)
Best Value: #3 Perpetua 8-1 4th
Next Best: #5 Propero 3-1 6th
Exotics Use: #4 Instant Royalty 6-1 7th

5th: Cal-MSW, F&M-3+, 6.5f-T (P4, P3, DD, Super)

M. Jones favorite will take some beating, but hard not root for 'Luck' star John Ortiz who has bought in with Mrs. Auerbach and Barry Abrams on #4 My Yammy Heat. Ortiz, who brought Turo Escalante to life, has totally been taken in by racing and is now a Santa Anita regular. Sems up against it here, but Ortiz' enthusiasm and drum beating for the sport merits appreciation and reward..

Most Likely: #8 Unbridled Ambition 8-5 4th
Next Best: #10 Comin Easy 4-1 3rd
Exotics Use: #6 Gypsy Friday 7-2 2nd
Super Add: #4 My Yammy Heat 8-1 8th

6th: OC/N2X, F& M-4+, 6f (P3, DD, Super)

Most Likely: #1 American Lady 6-5 2nd
Best Value: #2 Miss Radiance 6-1 4th
Next Best: #6 Mildly Offensive 5-2 WON ($5.00)
Exotics Use: #8 Chukchi Sunrise 5-1 3rd

7th: ALW/N1X, F&M-4+, 9f-T (DD, Super)

Most Likely: #6 Caelis 5-2 2nd
Best Value: #2 Meltarib 9-2 3rd
Next Best: #1 Triveni 9-2 4th
Exotics Use: #7 Heidi Maria 7-2 5th

8th: CLM, 4+, 1m (Super, Super Hi-5)

SCR #3, #8, #9..

Brutally tough finale with class droppers to decipher..

Most Likely: #5 Man Chester Man 6-1 WON ($7.60)
Best Value: #11 Maker 12-1 3rd
Next Best: #12 SCR
Exotics Use: #4 Devils Afleet 6-1 2nd
Super/Hi-5: #10 All My Chips 15-1 7th

<$25 P6 Play:

3: 7
4: 7
5: 8
6: 1-2
7: 1-2-6
8: 5-11

1x1x1x2x3x2 = 12 X $2 = $25

@$50 P4 Play:

5: 8-10
6: 1-2-6
7: 1-2-6
8: 1-4-5-10-11-12/SCR

2x3x3x6 = 108 x .50 = $54

Good luck!
Steve

I know it's not Aqu or SA, but who the hell is this Yomar Ortiz and what is he doing riding horses? He needs to be walking hots. That's as close to a track as he needs to be.

Desert Wheat still campaigning. Wow! I noticed him and Lawyer Ron in Diamond Jo Stakes held at Evangeline Downs on New Year's Eve 2005. Link below contains story.

I saw Lawyer Ron a few weeks later at Fair Grounds at Louisiana Downs meet. He was convincing victor in Risen Star Stakes. RIP Lawyer Ron...

He's riding at Gulfstream, but needs to be riding goats at the local circus.

Check out his ride on Buzz the Deputy today in the 3rd.

Thanks a lot! Key was Viv's Tiara drawing in to the 6th. Thought her likelihood made it possible to go narrow there and play it for the full $1 increment and we got a nice return... Outpaid the parlay.
