In 1975 Angel Cordero Jr. was celebrated when he set a record by winning 22 races in one week in New York (a record broken in 1977 by Steve Cauthen). In that same week, Martin saddled 15 winners to little or no fanfare. Given that saddling 15 winners is considerably more difficult than riding 22 winners, Martin was asked if all the attention paid to Cordero and not him bothered him. "Damn right it bothers me" he said as he walked away.
