My favorite Pancho Martin story:

In 1975 Angel Cordero Jr. was celebrated when he set a record by winning 22 races in one week in New York (a record broken in 1977 by Steve Cauthen). In that same week, Martin saddled 15 winners to little or no fanfare.

Given that saddling 15 winners is considerably more difficult than riding 22 winners, Martin was asked if all the attention paid to Cordero and not him bothered him.

"Damn right it bothers me" he said as he walked away.

Sham - great horse. Broke the Kentucky Derby record with Secretariat. Secretariat broke his heart in the Belmont.

One of the all time greats. When he was in his prime, he could train circles around all of today's supposed supertrainers.
