Default Men Smarter Than Women?

I can't find original article on this but it is interesting and you get the point. Basically based on most test scores and multiple studies over the years men have about a 3.6 point advantage over women in IQ. Now here's the rub.
http://www.excal.on.ca/index.php?opt...=2224&Itemid=2

"Women are actually superior to men, on average, in conscientiousness," said Rushton. "Women do better than men in university, and in many jobs because they're more reliable. They do their homework, and they show up on time. They're probably more socially intelligent than men."

The fact is emotional intelligence may well be more important than any general IQ test. In fact I think it is. Generally speaking the difference in IQ is related to math scores. This makes sense in some ways do to evolution if nothing else. In hunter/gatherer societies geometry and depth perception was utilized more by men. Emotional intelligence and social ability was better in women and always has been.

As a teacher, I see girls consistently do better than boys in school. In fact, it isn't even close. Many colleges need to actively recruit boys or else their demographics are skewed. Girls work harder and are more succesful. Why, I think behavior has something to do with it. I think boys would benefit from being taught in all boy classes. Girls have done better in math when taught in all girl classes.

I believe in the future women will take over leadership postitions at a increased rate throughout the business community. Most millionaires average IQs, take sports out of it, is just 1200 on the SATs. Some of the smartest people I know can't do much of anything. Philosophy degress enable you to deliver pizzas and little else. And that's what a friend who got a full ride to Stanford for his Phd will find out.

Very interesting topic. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on it, from both camps. Randall

Men and Women - Differences

While eating out and the bill arrives, Mike, Charlie, Bob and John will each throw in $20 even though the bill is only $22.50. None will have anything smaller, and none will admit they want change back. When girls get the bill out come the calculators.

With money a man will pay $2 for a $1 item he wants. A woman will pay $1 for a $2 dollar item she doesn't want.

In a bathroom a man has 6 items. A toothbrush, shaving cream, razor, a bar of soap, and a towel from Holiday Inn. A women has on average 337 items in her bathroom. A man would not be able to identify most of these Items.

In arguments a woman has the last word. Anything a man says after that is the beggining of a new argument.

Women love cats. Men say they love cats, but when women aren't looking men kick cats.

A woman worries about the future until she gets a husband. A husband doesn't worry about the future until he gets a wife.

A woman will dress up to go shopping, water the plants, empty the garbage, answer the phone, and read a book. A man will get dressed up for weddings and funerals.

A succsessful man is one who makes more money than his wife can spend. A successful woman is one who can find such a man.

All back to the same problem. What exactly is smart? The way IQ's are determined are complete bull caca. I will say again that these tests were designed to illustrate deficiencies, not superior capabilities. You have to look at the tests themselves and try to figure out what they are trying to test for. Spatial reasoning, verbal reasoning, mathematical symbolic reasoning, memory, etc... on and on and on... BS that leadership positions require superior intelligence. I have taught 3 different kids that did not miss one question on the old SAT and GRE. Two of the three are living at home, still... the other one works for himself as a consultant. Leadership requires a hell of a lot more than these test show imo.
The ability to read people accurately and manipulate them accordingly, to see opportunity where others see a wasteland (creativity in the way one observes phenomena), pragmatism, ability to juggle large amounts of information quickly (throw out the crap, focus on what is important for diff cases; handipppers would be good at this) and make sound judgements based on relevant data, to realize what is, and is not, in your realm of control... I could continue on with these maybe forever...

ok Randall,
Just trying to offer some "humor".
IMHO...women are smarter. Men have better spatial abilities.
I'll have to look for real research on "cognitive differences".
Seems that I remember women are much better verbally.
I've watched children play at recess.
When the "game comes to a point of dispute, the boys decide immediately and get back to the game. The girls stop playing, sit down, and spend the rest of their recess discussing the "rules". Game over.

Oh wayne you have clearly never met me....

I can do the math for a bill in my head...but usually just insist on paying for the whole meal.

I will spend any amount for an item that I need and nothing for stuff that I don't.

there are certain members here who can attest to the fact that my bathroom only contains the absolute essentials.

OK the argument thing is totally true...

I hate cats...totally and completely hate cats. I can't stress this enough, I don't like cats.

I worry what the future might be like if I am stupid enough to get married. And I worry for the dumb ass who would be stupid enough to ask me.

No chance of me dressing in anything other than barn clothes without good reason. And there are few good reasons.

I would never spend another person's money...and I hate other women who do...

i generally offer to buy as well, something i enjoy. but i can do math in my head in no time flat.

hate to shop, have a list when i do. no deviation, run thru the store, pay and leave. hate shoppping. thank god for online shopping, so i don't have to go into a store. have been to the mall once in the last two years.
sorry, no stock of things in the bathroom.

i have been told i'll argue with a fence post, but i don't necessarily have to have the last word.

dressing up is wearing my good tennis shoes.

Ok so being smart is the ability to manipulate figures in one's head. That would make me smart. Therefore something must be terribly wrong with this definition.

I can hear a tune in my head, listen to the "same" tune played differently and tell you exactly which note is "wrong", high or low. To my brother playing a 12 string guitar... A conversation: me my bro

no thats wrong, it does not as good if you would just change...
Where is it wrong? Play it again. Stop, thats a little to high.

Can I actually play the instrument or read the music like my brother? Hell no. Have I tried? yes, I cant do it. I am bad. Can I hum the tune and hit the right note so he does not have to play a song again allowing him can change it easily? No. I cannot reproduce the sound. But I can hear in my own head, I am humming the wrong note. He has got to get it right or it wont work.

I swear if you do this just a bit higher it will sound perfect. Play what a bit higher? Play this part again (humming attempted). Hell I am having a hard time even tell what your are trying to hum. Brother plays it again with my suggestion. Thats it you got it That does sound a lot better. Stay here what??? so this can take forever?

I still humbly ask... What is smart? One catches on to information quickly and can manipulate it quickly... I think this is what our society deems smart. So most of the people on this board are probably very smart.

BTW, I have noticed the thing same that DTS has with spatial relations in males and females. I can give multiple examples.

i don't know that one is smarter than the other. just different. oh boy, the PC police will be out in force now.

supposedly women aren't into math or science. i enjoy math, always have. 'science' as a term is very broad, some things i like, not others. very hard when people like to generalize and label folks. it's funny tho...i get told you're like a man in many things. what's that supposed to mean? plenty of women out there like me--it's not that we're like men, we're just perfect examples of how not all women are the same!

There are exceptions to everything. You are really confusing this if you think I am labeling anyone. These are not hard and fast rules.

And since we are on this topic, what is successful? I find it interesting that CEOs are considered successful and used in the first post. Successful is making money? getting things done with large numbers of people in an efficient manner? I am so screwed up. I got to have something more tangible. Successful... you set goals and achieve them? take advantage of bad situations and turn them into good situations? WHAT?

Pgn,

I would say success is graduating college. How about holding a steady job?
I used the business example b/c the perceived glass ceiling is more or less seen in business over other jobs. If you have better examples then give them. In this thread you do little more than ask questions and not even attempt to answer them. Actually all you did was ask questions. Come to the table with something please.

Well, I would place my mathematical and analytical skills above most people, including men, so I never have to pull out the calculator to do simple computations. I have received above a 100 average in every one of my mathematical courses in college so far. However, I still have to take Stat and Cal. What fun

I never buy anything that I don't A) extremely desire or B) need.

The third one is true for me. I am a pretty girl in ever sense of the word. I like to look good and dress up. However, I also like to get down and dirty with the horses. I do it well both ways.

Not true for me although I always have the last and final word when I know that I am right (as have facts). Most people normally give up when arguing with me when I know that I am right because I don't back down. However, I do usually realize when I am not right and will change my opinion or back down accordingly and apologetically.

I have a cat, and I love him dearly.

Not true. The only thing that I need a man for is sex, and to give me children. Other than that, I don’t depend on a man for anything and I never will. That is a lesson I learned early in life. I am worried about my career, but not my future with a man.

I only get dressed up when I go out in the evenings to party. I wear baggy pants and T-shirts and a hat to college. I dress in old clothes to go to the barn. I dress down way more than I dress up.

I will probably make more money than my future husband (if I’m crazy enough to ever have one). Nah, I am crazy enough. I like being with a man. It would be a plus if he made more money than me because I plan on making six figures, and it would be nice to have enough money to own racehorses. Oh yes, and the man that I do marry has to love horses and racehorses as much as I do. Well, that eliminates most of the men on this earth right then and there. LOL.

To all that responded...
I apologize. Yes, I'm sorry.
When Randall asked his question, I thought a "joke" would defuse the debate.
As you all can see, it back-fired.
It wasn't "funny" as some took it seriously. That was really not my intent.
I love ALL people no matter their gender.
I'm sorry if you took my "joke" as data supported "truth".

Well, I could write a book here...much of my graduate training revolved around IQ testing etc...here's the thing, as we said in the 60's while we marched through southern cities...it may be intellectually interesting to compare groups of people but there are always more exceptions than those who fit neatly into any definition or description...the differences in groups are rather insignificant when compared to individual differences...if you conclude one sex (or race or other descriptive grouping) is more or less intelligent than another...of what use is that? I mean really...we think of folks who are somehow "challenged" but then along comes a Helen Keller or Stephen Hawking and our entire thesis gets blown to hell!

LOL.
never get married. you love you cat 'dearly' but only want to marry for sex and children? your man would feel very neglected if that's all you wanted him for.
i depend on my husband, as he does for me. not to pay my bills. for love, respect, companionship, friendship.... we treat each other like gold, who better to be the best to than the one person you plan to spend the rest of your days with?
for sex you can hire someone, same as having a kid.
