There's not too many people out there that could hit like Gwynn. RIP Big Guy!

I walk by his statue everyday at PETCO. Much loved by this City.
Like Bob said way too young....

His stats speak for themselves - dude rarely had more than 30 strikeouts in an entire season - compare that to today... |

In 1986 he had his career high 701 plate appearances, and only struck out 35 times all year. It was a shame that the Padres were so horrible that a lot of people outside of the NL West really don't know or remember how great he was. |

I read on Facebook against Glavine, Smoltz, Maddux, and Pedro Martinez he fanned only 3 times in 323 AB's just blew my mind. Patience out the ass, did he have! So diciplined.

Farewell, Mr Gwynn. As lifelong Astros fan, I admired his body of work. He knew pitchers better than these pitchers knew themselves. Gwynn understood analytics before term 'sabermetrics' was defined.
Tony Gwynn blended art and science of hitting masterfully. In today's environment, I would venture to say he would be shift buster.

Very sorry to hear about the passing of Tony Gwynn. No doubt it, he was a great hitter, but from what I've read and heard, he was an even greater person.
