Multiple accidents make for a dark day

Sunday was a tough day at Calder as three horses had to be humanely destroyed and two riders were taken to the hospital with severe injuries.

Jockeys Chris DeCarlo and Roimes Chirinos both suffered fractured collarbones in a spill that began when Wild Blonde, with DeCarlo aboard, went down suddenly approaching the three-eighths pole on the turf course during the seventh race. Both Talented Princess and Chirinos - along with The Real Future and Pedro Monterrey Jr. - fell when unable to avoid the stricken Wild Blonde although Monterrey Jr. escaped without injury.

Wild Blonde was euthanized on the track, while Talented Princess and The Real Future ran off and appeared none the worse for wear following the incident.

Tragedy struck again before and during the running of Sunday's feature, the $35,000 Stormy Frolic Stakes. Post Invader, who was scheduled to make her first start since February, had to be euthanized after flipping in the paddock. Several minutes later, Dantrelle Light broke down while in front in the race and seemingly on the way to victory in deep stretch.

Suaveness took advantage of Dantrelle Light's misfortune, rallying to victory over Casa Mimaty in the Stormy Frolic.

Personal Bid died of a heart attack in foal to Broken Vow in mid November.

In the early 1990s, Richard Schosberg trained Personal Bid, a New York-bred filly with whom he won several stakes and $165,298.

Ironically, Sunday, December 2, Light Tactic trained by Richard Schosberg pulled away to a 3˝-length victory over Brown Eyed Belle on Sunday in the $78,000 Personal Bid Stakes for New York bred 3-year-old fillies at Aqueduct.

There were 176 recorded works on the main track at Hollywood Park on Sunday morning. The morning workouts were marred by the death of Coastal Eddy, the winner of a maiden claimer at the Oak Tree at Santa Anita meeting in October. Trained by Eoin Harty, Coastal Eddy was euthanized after suffering a knee injury following a five-furlong workout.

High Yield had to be euthanized a few days ago because of Osler illness.

Quote

"HIGH YIELD PASSED AWAY"
For Alain Regnier, the good news of the arrival of Hold That Tiger has unfortunately been doubled of a poor one : the death of High Yield (Storm Cat), the star of the haras de la Haie Neuve. He covered 110 mares last year and would probably have cover 130 this year ... Alain Regnier sadly said : "We could do nothing against the Osler's disease (infection of the heart) which affected High Yield, we have to euthanize him. It was a very hard time, I can assure you."

Moscow Flyer's sire put down

MOSCOW SOCIETY, sire of the great Moscow Flyer, was put down on Thursday night after suffering a leg injury. The 22-year-old son of Nijinsky had spent the last 18 years at Hugh Williams' Ballyvolane Stud in County Limerick, where he stood for €3,000 this year.

“He fractured a hind leg getting up in his box and we had to have him put down,” Williams said on Friday. “I bought him as a four-year-old out of training with Henry Cecil and he was a part of the furniture here.

“Although Moscow Flyer would be his best, he's had plenty of top horses and he's done me very well.He was always a National Hunt sire but he got a 5f winner as well so he was very versatile.”

While the 13-time Grade 1 winner Moscow Flyer was undoubtedly Moscow Society's best runner, the sire was responsible for a number of outstanding jumps performers.

Among them are the smart young chaser Snowy Morning, along with Mighty Moss, runner-up to Istabraq in the Royal & Sunalliance Novices' Hurdle, and the prolific Moscow Express, winner of the Grade 1 Powers Gold Label Tote Gold Cup at Fairyhouse.

Owned by Sheikh Mohammed, Moscow Society ran just twice during his racing career. He made a winning debut under Steve Cauthen over 1m4f at Doncaster in the May of his three-year-old season, having been sent of the heavy odds on favourite.

That result earned him a trip to Royal Ascot to contest the Listed Queen's Vase, where he was beaten only three-quarters of a length by Green Adventure, having pulled seven lengths clear of the field. Having been struck into during the race, Moscow Society didn't race again.

Three horses euthanized

Three horses were euthanized on Tuesday morning at Hollywood Park as a result of injuries sustained either galloping or during workouts.

Wise Mandate, trained by Mel Stute, broke down shortly after completing a six-furlong drill in 1:13.80. According to Stute's son, Gary, Wise Mandate broke his sesamoids.

Wise Mandate finished last in the California Cup Juvenile on Nov. 3.
I guess the other two weren't important enough to list.

TRAGEDY AS MACS BREAKS DOWN

Barry Geraghty paid tribute to a "great servant" after Macs Joy lost his life when breaking down in the Boylesports.com International Hurdle at Cheltenham.

Jessica Harrington's eight-year-old formed part a holy trinity of hurdlers alongside Irish compatriots Brave Inca and Hardy Eustace, and fought out many memorable finishes with the duo.

Only a short head and a head separated the trio in the 2005 Irish Champion Hurdle, with Macs Joy gaining the upper hand - forming one of his nine career wins from 30 starts. He also finished runner-up to Brave Inca in the 2006 Smurfit Kappa Champion Hurdle with Hardy Eustace third.

The three-times Grade One winner had been a popular choice for what proved to be his final outing and he was backed into 7-2 favouritism alongside last season's Champion Hurdle hero Sublimity.

But having travelled sweetly he broke down badly before the third-last flight and was pulled up by Geraghty, before being put down after a broken tibia was diagnosed.

Geraghty said: "It is a desperate pity as he was a great servant and a great horse in his own right.

"He had felt fine all of the way, but I then felt him lose his action behind.

"Jessie is upset at losing such a good horse. He has been with her for the past five seasons and has won plenty of top-class races.

"Winning the AIG Champion Hurdle in Leopardstown when he beat Brave Inca and Hardy Eustace, and when he was second to Brave Inca in the 2006 Champion Hurdle were probably my two favourite memories.

"He was a pleasure to ride. He was easy to settle, jumped brilliantly and I always enjoyed riding him."

Clerk of the course Simon Claisse confirmed: "He broke a tibia, which is a bone above the hock, and was put down immediately."

CHAMPION MARE QUEENLEDO SUCCUMBS TO COLIC

AUBURN, Wash. (Dec. 14) – Queenledo, a three-time state champion, died due to complications from colic, trainer Tim McCanna said.

One of only two horses to win a stakes at Emerald Downs at age 2, 3 and 4, Queenledo compiled a 7-7-0 record from 18 starts with earnings of $242,824.

The 5-year-old Washington-bred mare missed the 2007 season with a tendon injury, but had been slated to resume training this winter. She suffered a bout with a twisted colon, however, and died late last month at McCanna's farm in Yakima.

“She was the hardest-trying horse I've ever trained,” said McCanna, the all-time leading trainer at Emerald Downs. “It's a very tough blow.”

McCanna owned Queenledo in partnership with his wife, Jan, his brother, Ray, Harold Krupke and Stu Clifford.

A dark bay mare by Slewdledo, Queenledo captured Washington Thoroughbred Breeders' Association divisional honors in 2004, 2005 and 2006. She won six stakes at Emerald Downs including the Emerald Distaff and Belle Roberts in 2006.

Go Johnny, 7 years old, today at Exeter.

Rest in peace.

Excerpt, Comments (Racing post).....

CRYSTAL D’AINAY has his quirks but Alan King’s useful stayer quite readily took advantage of a gilt-edged opportunity in a race where favourite Minella Tiperrary disappointed and Go Johnny took a fatal early fall. The former high-class staying hurdler missed last season with a leg injury and disappointed on his reappearance, but the way he reeled-in top weight Eric's Charm before dossing in front indicates much of the old ability is still there. His trainer Alan King ruled-out the Welsh nationaland will allow him to 'do his own thing' in a chase-only campaign.

His name was Green in Blue.

He was 7 years old, eternal Class 3 boy. Gelding who had come from Ireland and raced the past 3 seasons in HK.

His first season wasn't stellar, but he improved in 06 - 07. In 11 runs he was first once, 2nd twice, 4th twice and 5th once which actually matters there because of the point structure.

This season he had 4 starts, winning once in a race no one thought he could..... a lot of the others were rated in the mid-70's and he was about ten points down. He did it though... huge longshot.

Beat some nice horses home like Liaobuqi and Courageousheart, South Breeze and Maninthemirror.

This season, in 3 runs, he managed to pick up 5 points which is pretty good.

I didn't see the race where he brokedown the other day, all I know is they tried and couldn't save him.

This was the only horse Mak Yun Chak owned, was trained by Woods, ran 40 times, and was often workout partner to Visionario and Prideoftheorient.
