Grade 3 winner Chattahoochee War retired

by Pete Denk

Grade 3 winner Chattahoochee War has been retired after suffering a high suspensory injury while preparing for Friday’s $200,000 Fifth Third Elkhorn Stakes (G2) at Keeneland Race Course.

The six-year-old War Chant horse won four times and finished second five times in 15 career starts, earning $553,416 for Amerman Racing Stable. The injury was discovered after he worked four furlongs at Keeneland on Sunday, said the Amerman’s consultant, Bob Feld.

Trained by Bobby Frankel, Chattahoochee War was a two-time stakes winner as a three year-old in 2005, when he won the $82,200 Hill Rise Stakes at Santa Anita Park and the $150,000 Central Bank Transylvania Stakes (G3) at Keeneland.

“He was a very talented racehorse,” Feld said. “He finished second to English Channel in the Virginia Derby (G3) and competed against the best horses of his generation. We’re hoping to reach a stud deal.”

Bred in Kentucky by Edmund J. Loder, Chattahoochee War is out of Grade 3 winner Buffalo Berry (Ire), by Sri Pekan. The Amermans purchased Chattahoochee War for $250,000 at the 2003 Keeneland September yearling sale.

Sir Greeley...soft cannon bone. He didn't hurt himself, but the decision was made to stop on him before he did. He was never a superstar, but he was always there, and put in a few real good races. He went out with a nice GIII win.

Nice runner. He has about 9 lines of Barcaldine. Barcaldine was known for his large Cannon Bones. 9 lines is not a lot of Barcaldine. A relationship here ?

Jump Start has 8 lines of Barcaldine thru 10 gens. He had cannon bone fracture ending career.

Excerpt, SCMP.....

Meanwhile, Dao Dao, one of the rising stars, has been retired and will be returned to competition in Australia under trainer John Hawkes.

Owner Lee Kwai-sang told trainer John Size, and confirmed in an e-mail to the South China Morning Post, he believes Dao Dao "is not good enough" for Hong Kong and he'll be replaced by another horse he has bred.

Size and jockey Douglas Whyte believed Dao Dao could measure up to the very best milers next season, but in the wake of his disappointing but unlucky run in the Champions Mile Lee was not convinced and made his shock decision to pull the gelding out.

Size said he tried to reason with the owner, assuring him of his personal belief Dao Dao would be a worthy top-grade performer next term, but to no avail.

Lee told of a "feeling of guilt" when he watched Dao Dao winning easily under topweight of 133 pounds at his previous run on April 6.

"I don't want to ask them to keep on running faster until they break down," Lee added.

The owner said Dao Dao, together with his Hong Kong-Macau Trophy winner Slow Waltz, would be "let back to nature for a nice holiday" before joining the Hawkes team.

Hawkes was the original trainer of Dao Dao, with the gelding racing three times in Sydney for two wins and a second to subsequent Group One winner Sniper's Bullet.

The difference being that Sir Greeley raced thru age 6 and started nearly 30 times, while Jump Start made just 5 career starts, all at 2.

Well, I guess he's not going to prove to be the best from his crop as I had predicted before the 2007 Derby.

No one tell Andy.

Don't worry, I won't tell him.
I don't even want to consider what it might do to his fragile mental health if he began to think - even for one second - that he could no longer count on your predictions.
