Three-year-olds used to run in a 1 1/8 stakes race (the Colin) on Belmont Stakes Day. It was nice when a quality horse like Fly So Free -- clearly not cut out for 12 furlongs -- could race in (and win, if memory serves) on Belmont Stakes Day.

Fly So Free won the Riva Ridge, now called the Woody Stephens ( they finally smartened up and turned him back ).
