Poor guy.
Sad end: Versaki put down to sleep By Usman Rangeela Versaki (C Rajendra up) with owner Haresh Mehta (right) The got-abroad colt Versaki, belonging to one of the city’s biggest old property redeveloping entity Rohan Lifescapes’ owner Haresh Mehta, was put down to permanent sleep on compassionate grounds following a crippling injury suffered by him during a pre Derby mock-race held on Sunday last. Versaki was a classy looking dark bay colt with definite streaks of grey on his body and had begun his career on a winning note on February 1 last year. He had earned over a crore of rupees in prize money from six events, which included the Poonawalla Breeders’ Multi Million and the Nanoli Stud Pune Derby. The four-year-old colt, nurtured by veteran professional CD Katrak, tasted his first career defeat when he last raced in the Indian 2000 Guineas. Versaki was bought by Mehta after paying a princely sum to its breeder and was a likely contender for the Indian Derby to be run next month. Derby test Katrak wanted to test Versaki’s mettle in a mock-race before he could fancy the colt’s chances in the most-sought after event of the Indian racing calendar. The Bangalore-based rider Suraj Narredu was entrusted the task of partnering Versaki in the mock-race where he was accompanied by three other horses. Versaki was racing freely behind his stable partner Sea of Kisses who led the charge over the mile-and-a-quarter journey. At the final bend, Versaki showed signs of distress as he veered out to the centre of the track and stopped galloping. Narredu dismounted Versaki, who had apparently gone lame. The injured horse was immediately shifted in a horse-ambulance to the RWITC’s equine hospital. Painful decision Speaking to this newspaper trainer Katrak informed, “Versaki had fractured the cannon bone of his right fore-leg. We tried to mend that hoping to retire him to stud once his condition improved. However, Versaki had a nasty fall in the stables on Monday and suffered irreparable fracture to his left fore leg. Since the owner is out of the country, I took take the painful decision of euthanizing Versaki to save the animal from any further hardship.” Versaki’s untimely exit from the racing scene will have left his owner shattered but Mehta’s Derby hopes however are still alive as he has another frontline candidate in Becket, the ante post favourite to win the Bangalore Derby to be run on Republic Day and who is expected to arrive at Mahalaxmi shortly after that run. http://sidfernando.files.wordpress.c...ki-win_big.jpg |

I keep thinking about these two and wondering why this received no attention here.
I know that there are international lurkers and so wouldn't want any from India to think we didn't notice. http://www.derbytrail.com/forums/sho...881#post621881 * * * http://sidfernando.wordpress.com/201...sprinters-cup/ * * * On Jacqueline, and Beckett... http://www.indiarace.com/NewsAround/...ar7_Mumbai.htm http://sidfernando.wordpress.com/201...cqueline-more/ |

I posted them in the angels thread but thought I should mention it here as well...
India lost two of it's major sires in the past few days: Razeen, who was 26 and stood at Usha and Placerville, 21. who died from cardiac arrest. Placerville lived at Poonawalla Stud (that's where Ace is) and so deepest sympathies to connections of both and particulary to Mr. Poonawalla who is a true gentleman. |

Good luck to Dr. Cyrus Poonawalla and his filly, Nearness of You, in the Derby tomorrow.
A shame the favorite was injured. Anyway, come home safe, kids. Maybe next year Ace wil have a runner or two. |

A little bit late with this but..
ACE IS OFF THE MARK! He has an undefeated filly, Sharaarat (2 from 2) and a colt, Amazing Desire (0-2-0 fom 3). (Well they list his 4th place finish but I don't want to be ridiculous here...). I knew everyone would be as happy as I am to hear this. |

Isn't She Special? Of course she is... her dad is Ace. (Excited cause I know he has G2 and 3 winners like Blue Ace, Unforgettable, Neona, Equine Lover, etc. but I think this is his first G1 winner).
