Sacred Kingdom gets off to a shaky start

Champion Sacred Kingdom was unimpressive on the track and then failed to gain a veterinary clearance for his first venture overseas in a day of unexpected pre-season drama at Sha Tin yesterday.
The world's champion sprinter finished seventh of 10 runners behind Jolly Good Fortune in the first of seven barrier trials on the all-weather track, with Ricky Yiu Poon-fie's new stable rider Weichong Marwing getting a disappointing first feel of the star.

Later, the Jockey Club's head of veterinary and international liaison, Brian Stewart, failed Sacred Kingdom after a physical appraisal, deeming the 2007 Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Sprint hero to be lame in the right front foot. After that shock, Yiu's stable vet Bronte Forbes was consulted and he identified the cause of the problem.

"It's a stone bruise, and I don't believe it will effect his preparation for the Sprinters Stakes in Japan," Yiu said.

"I only wanted the horse to have a quiet trial this morning and I instructed Weichong along those lines, so I was not surprised to see him back in the field. But he didn't do a lot in the final stages and my first thought was that the trial was just fair."

Marwing, the renowned South African riding ace who boasts a glittering big-race record, said Sacred Kingdom "felt OK" but he did not want to let the Encosta de Lago gelding down on a track that was cut up following overnight rain and many gallops earlier in the morning.

Ironically, the official veterinary inspection was not about Sacred Kingdom's foot soreness. Yiu explained that Sacred Kingdom had experienced an unrelated lameness in his near hind leg earlier in the summer and the official veterinary inspection was supposed to certify him as being clear of that issue for the Japan Racing Association (JRA).

"It sounds worse than it is," Yiu stressed. "I really don't think it will be a problem. After talking with Bronte, I think the horse will only miss two days work."

Sacred Kingdom is being set to emulate the great Silent Witness, who returned to racing in the autumn of 2002 with a stunning win in the Group One Sprinters Stakes (1,200m) at Nakayama racecourse. This year's renewal of the feature sprint will be on October 5.

Yiu originally thought he might run Sacred Kingdom in the Group Two Centaur Stakes over 1,200m at Hanshin on September 14, as a lead-up to the Sprinters Stakes, but ultimately decided against it.

Yiu said Sacred Kingdom will now have a barrier trial on turf over 1,000 metres down the straight at Sha Tin on September 16 as his major piece of work before departing for Japan.

The JRA issued six international invitations for the Sprinters Stakes but only two - Sacred Kingdom and eight-year-old British sprinter Les Arcs - have accepted.

Apart from Silent Witness' stunning performance to win the Sprinters Stakes in 2005, Australian raider Takeover Target lifted it the following year as well.

The Centaur Stakes and Sprinters Stakes are the fifth and sixth legs of the Global Sprint Challenge for 2008.

'Bleeders' given leeway

Horses with internal bleeding problems will be given an extra "strike" before facing compulsory retirement.

In the past, any horse categorised as a bleeder has been banned for three months and then for life after a repeat, but a rewriting of the rules may offer one more three-month ban for a second attack and then a third strike before retirement.

"We reviewed the bleeding rules around the world to see how we compared and there are some wide variations - Japan and UK have no restrictions, nor does Dubai, but they are looking into the issue. On the other hand it's three strikes in Singapore and Malaysia and two in South Africa," said the club's chief vet, Dr Brian Stewart, yesterday.

"Some trainers have told us we're too hard here with two bleeds before compulsory retirement and we decided that going to a third time would bring us more into line with international thinking.

"There is still discretion within the rules ... to recommend retirement for any horse where we feel there are health issues - bleeding or otherwise - impacting on consistency of performance, race safety and the welfare of the horse itself," he said.

Trainer Ricky Yiu Poon-fie is still hopeful of getting world champion sprinter Sacred Kingdom to the post to defend his Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Sprint in December, despite an injury which will keep him sidelined for the immediate future.
A tilt at the Sprinters' Stakes in Japan next month is now off the agenda, replaced by at least six weeks of rest after Yiu revealed a possible hairline fracture of Sacred Kingdom's sesamoid bone on the near foreleg.

Sacred Kingdom had indicated all was not perfect with him when he trialled "only fairly" last Tuesday morning and he was found to be lame with a suspected stone bruise in a subsequent veterinary examination.

"After he was a little disappointing in his barrier trial, we thought he had a bruised toe which would come right quickly. And after two or three days he was sound but just not moving as comfortably as he usually does," Yiu said at yesterday's Happy Valley barrier trials.

"He seemed 95 per cent sound so we decided to check everything over again and we found a faint shadow on the sesamoid. I expect he will be OK in a couple of days but not sound enough to put any hard work into him for Japan, so that trip is cancelled."

Yiu said the path for Sacred Kingdom now would involve "six or seven weeks of just going steady".

However, he was not ruling out having the gelding ready for a first-up start in the Hong Kong Sprint on December 14, the race which he won in such devastating style last year to vault to the top of world sprint rankings.

"We will x-ray the injury again in about four weeks, and obviously what we do then depends on the progress of it," Yiu said.

"At this stage, I am still optimistic that he can be fit for that race but if there is any doubt, his preparation will stop.


"The owner and myself, we have all the patience in the world and if we have to miss the international race then it isn't the end of the world. There are plenty of nice races later in the season for Sacred Kingdom."

While the trainer was disappointed at the injury, he wasn't describing the problem's emergence as bad luck but as a blessing.

"Maybe it was good luck because we found it. If we had kept going with him, Sacred Kingdom could have been very badly injured with no chance to come back again," Yiu said.

Lisvale to race in Hong Kong

LISVALE, a Listed-race winner at the Curragh in June, has left David Wachman's stable to race in Hong Kong.

The son of Danehill Dancer, fourth of sixto Plan last time out in the Group 3 Keeneland International Stakes, was also runner-up in the Gallinule Stakes this season.

After being sold through McKeever St Lawrence, he will race in Hong Kong for the new season, due to start this month.

Tsui draws centrally in Trainers Ride For Charity

Me Tsui Yu-sak, the nominal favourite for the Trainers Ride For Charity, drew in between rivals Derek Cruz and Paul O'Sullivan at this morning's barrier draw for the curtain raiser to the new season next Monday, 15 September at Sha Tin.

Tsui, third in the trainers' premiership last season, will exit gate 2 aboard Bodacious in the 800m dash for charity with O'Sullivan to his inside on Sambuoyant and defending champion Derek Cruz racing from stall 3 on Bobo Win.

There is little between the three horses taking part on official ratings, although they will compete at 'catch weights' - that is, without weight restrictions apart from a minimum impost of 125lbs.

This year's winner will collect a cheque for HK$200,000 to the charity of the trainer and owners' choice of charity with HK$100,000 to the first and second runners-up and Tsui has nominated UNICEF to benefit from his endeavours in the saddle.

Paul O'Sullivan and Sambuoyant's owners have decided the Rosary Church in Tsim Sha Tsui should gain from their participation.

Asked why he chose to ride Sambuoyant, O'Sullivan, who has recently re-accustomed himself to riding out in the mornings, replied: "Because he's quiet!"

"I reckon I'm shooting for third place against Derek and Me Tsui, who are so much fitter, but I'm guaranteed a nice sum of money for a good cause so I'm delighted to take part," last year's Mercedes-Benz Hong Kong Derby winning trainer smiled.

Last year Derek Cruz came with a late burst aboard Ganbaria to steal the inaugural Trainers Ride For Charity and 12 months later he relies on the nine-year-old Bobo Win.

Cruz's donation will go to the Asia Foundation to assist with the redevelopment in Sichuan province after the earthquake in May.

"Personally, I think I'm fitter than this time last year and I'm happy with the horse because he has early pace - I think he'll go well," said Cruz.

Publicly crediting the sportsmanship of the participating trainers and owners, Mr William A. Nader, Executive Director, Racing, said the event would open the 2008/09 season in the best possible manner.

And as a summer of Equestrianism at Sha Tin draws to a close, to keep with the Olympic theme, Mr Nader added that each of the three trainers would ride for a gold, silver and bronze medal.
