This one goes under the two kinds of people in the world and the taste in music they have. We have "Wheel of Fortune" people of which there are many and whom are responsible for the decay of popular music and prime time TV. The American Idols, Biggest Loser, and other reality TV. There are many of these folks thus their numbers control a good deal of what is offered by radio and network TV. Their fate like the lottery is about luck not what they know or have learned. The others are the "Jeopardy" people of which there are far fewer, hate reality TV, will watch something that makes them think and learn. These people rely on their wits and though they embrace luck that comes their way they prefer to earn an accomplishment. Shows like Damages, LOST, The Wire etc. get their attention because they make them think. The first time I heard Jeff Lynne speak he was telling the reporter that ELO would exceed the accomplishments of the Beatles. I may a mental note to put Mr Lynne in the "Wheel..." category as his music doesn't seem to live up to his expectations. |

Here is John Lennon on ELO: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T2XHOzRJv7A Here is Jeff Lynne playing with Eric Clapton, Elton John, and Geroge Harrison. If Jeff Lynne didn't have much talent, I wonder why all these guys wanted to work with him. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9_3GVhfnwZI |

The gig is not exactly Jeff Lynne's solo tour for legendary musician's but a charity started in 1976 which had a 10 year anniversary at this show.
The Prince's Trust concert was highlighted by a memorable rendition of Harrison and Clapton doing the Beatles white album classic "While My Guitar Gently Weeps..." Ringo and Elton added a little superstar color, Jeff Lynne might have organized the janitors that night but your going to have look a little further for Lynne's superstar involvement at this show. |

I don't think this subject is even debatable. It is obviously somewhat subjective, but it's not totally subjective. For example, it's not debatable whether Paul McCartney is gifted. That's not subjective. If a person doesn't think Paul McCartney is great, that person doesn't know what they're talking about. Who is better between John Lennon and Paul McCartney? Now that would be a subjective question. They are both great. They are two of the greatest singer/songwriters of all times. That's not debatable. Who is better between the two is a subjective question. But there is no doubt that they are both great. I would say the same thing for all the artists and groups that have sold tens of millions of albums. I don't think there's a single one that's not great. The Eagles were great. Fleetwood Mac is great. Billy Joel is great. Elton John is great, etc. There is a reason why these people all sold tens of millions of records. These people all have a talent that is extremely rare. There aren't a lot of Elton Johns out there. Each one of these people is one in a million. There are very few of them. These people have an amazing ear for music and they can write great melodies. Jeff Lynne has sold tens of millions of albums and he is highly respected in the business by his peers. What is your musical background so that you not only think you have a better ear than the general public but a better ear than all the stars that have asked Jeff Lynne to produce their albums? Why would you think you have a better ear than everyone else? Do you have perfect pitch or something? |

......ahhhhhhh NO he hasn't sold tens of millions. This is my problem with this whole Jeff Lynne is a superstar mentality. Stop embelishing the facts... Try this one....The link is every band with 50 million and more of sales. You won't find Jeff Lynne or ELO. Wikepedia isn't Gospel but it's not completely fiction either.... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of..._music_artists I think you should rewrite the Wiki piece they obviously missed your guy... |

But according to this wikipedia page, they did sell over 50 million records. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electric_Light_Orchestra |

Jeff Lynne and the Beatles:
In 1994 Jeff Lynne was approached by the remaining three Beatles to help them produce their "new" songs and restore John Lennon's vocals from poorly-preserved mono tapes containing some unfinished Lennon demos that they were given by Yoko Ono. The songs were "Free as a Bird" and "Real Love". McCartney admitted he was worried about Lynne being chosen as producer saying "He's such a pal of George's. They'd done the Wilburys, and I was expecting him to lead it that way. To tell you the truth, I thought that he and George might create a wedge, saying, 'We're doing it this way' and I'd be pushed out."[3] "Free as a Bird" later won a Grammy.[4] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeff_Lynne_and_The_Beatles |

Next you'll have Jeff Lynne responsible for writing She Loves You....you say Lynne has sold tens of millions of albums, I show you 150 bands that dusted his sales..... You respond to this with some lame paragraph about a Beatles song he produced using a Lennon demo performance from the 70's he never wrote, recorded or performed that won a Grammy for it's connection to other Fab Four songs. So this is how you argue a point, by never addressing the issue you created?? Let it go buddy, the band is barely north of sucking was outsold at a minimum by such musical giants as Ricky Martin (60 mil), The Village People (65 mil) and New Kids on the Block (70 mil) and just doesn't belong in the conversation of great bands. You like them and worship Lynne......some people get off on auditory route canal like this but please stop with the unreferenced garbage like Lynne was a central performer on stage with the Beatles at the 76' Prince's Trust concerts. No he wasn't......it's one thing to massage your upright base on stage and another to match Clapton's solo on Harrison's WMGGW's....... |
