It wasn't financially feasible to introduce a $500 suit.

The numbers in U.S.S. and club swimming weren't high enough. Now that's changed dramatically in the past 8 years. I don't know why exactly. I have an idea but it's not a politically correct opinion and it really is a slap in the face of white families and I'd rather not share it.

Even if the guy was being boring or unattractive(in their opinion,) I think he still deserved that time on camera. They should make a public apology to that guy. The other 3 guys combined for what was gunna be the expected Silver Medal(they gave him a deficit.) He made up that deficit on the best. That should of been about him. I guarantee you if he inherited a lead of that amount, then he would be blamed if he lost that lead. The 1st three Americans would have been said to have put forth Gold worthy efforts, and he would have been said to have put up a lesser effort than them(I feel the opposite took place here.) I know it's supposed to be about the team, but if the camera is gunna be on somebody during them National Anthem, then it should of been him.
You do realize that without Phelps' 47.51 (3rd fastest flat start time in history) the U.S. wouldn't even be on the medal stand?

Lezak had an outstanding swim, no doubt. But it's common sense to give most of the face time to Phelps, who more than likely will break 8 world records and get 8 golds. Phelps is the draw, not Lezak. Lezak will be getting paid. Don't worry about him.

The microeconomics idea makes sense. I'm curious to your politically incorrect thoughts though, the one sport I'm competitive in these days (ski racing) is almost exclusively whites for probably the same reason. I don't think anyone here would object to you speaking your mind.

Well I've always had the impression that parents plan for their children to attend college at an early age. Tuition is going sky high and sports are an avenue where kids can go for free.

Basketball for white kids? Low odds for a scholarship
Football? Depends on how big your kid is. Most kids are pussies nowadays.
Soccer? Depends on where the kid lives. Most local programs are horrendous.
etc. etc.

Swimming is a hot sport for middle-class whites. Most coaches are former collegiate swimmers and they make a decent living due to swimming being a year round sport (10 months at least). A swim coach can double dip, U.S.S., High School.

The time standards make it easier to foresee the future and potential for an athletic scholarship.

15 years ago the parents, for the most part, were laid back at U.S.S meets. It was a vacation atmosphere...even the state meet. Today? It's madness. Parents are pushing these kids to succeed and coaches have to deal with both the adult and child during the meet. It's crazy.

But to a middle-class family with 4 children...how are they going to pay for their kids to get through college?

If you have a daughter you want to go to college on a free ride??? Start her in golf...Major colleges and universities are begging to give away scholarships to young ladies that are even marginally talented.

true that.. I was getting scholarship offers my junior year. My best friend, who never beat me when we played in high school (I was very competitive when I played daily), got a ride to Mt St Mary's and was there #1 golfer some years.

For me at the time, having to practice golf 4+ hours a day in college would have been torture.

Michael Phelps what can anyone even say...
the relay WOW!!!
Coughlin being the first woman to defend the backstroke gold!!!!

I haven't kept up to the swimming thread....
but some interesting theories here...

I think the chinese did indeed soup up the water creating a pool bias for the americans and the rest of the world to smash records....

Oh and trusty forget coughlin and the french girl....I'll take that russian from last nite, the rogue who swims with his hair exposed!!!!!

So the overagressive, overbearing parent syndrome has invaded juvenile swimming now too. Makes sense, first it was just football- then baseball, basketball, and hockey joined in, now it's all those plus golf, skiing, swimming, running, parasailing, chess, whatever. Pretty pathetic in my opinion. I think a lot of these guys try to make up for their own inadequacy in sport by pushing their children too hard. With Title IX, it's even harder for a male to get an athletic scholarship and shouldn't be the dependent path to college. Doing well in class is still the best route, no matter what high school you attend.

I agree with GPK though... a girl with a strong 5 handicap is very much in line for a scholarship.

Partial academic/athletic has been the trend. Auburn is notorious for this.

A girl with a strong 17 handicap will get a golf scholarship.. I girl with a 5 handicap will be going to the University of Arizona on a golf scholarship.

I didn't watch prelims today and there isn't video OR heat sheets posted on NBC's goddamn-ridiculously s.hitty Olympic website. The webmaster should be sent to die by firing squad.

OK good to go, I'm with ya on these.
And yeah about the site, ya gotta dig and search for everything......
The video stream is great though if you download the upgrade.
And did you know on Direct 750 through 756 they have an interactive menu, kinda useless but different nonetheless.

I can't stand having to wait through a commercial ONLINE. NBC and Microsoft can suck my balls.

Yeah all I care about is swimming.
