Default Horse of the Year

Say Big Brown does win the Belmont, becomes the first TC winner in 30 years, and (obviously) immediately retires to Three Chimneys. Say Curlin stays in training for the rest of the year, wins another race overseas and then say, a second BC Classic and becomes the leading money earner of all time.

I don't know about anyone else, but I will be extremely urked/pissed if Big Brown gets HOY. Pity if his owners ideals about taking advantage of Curlin's potential to showcase Kentucky and our horse racing get overshadowed by a brilliant 3YO who goes straight to the shed...

I agree but I also look at these awards like Grammys
they mean nothing. So far Curlin has only easily won the DWC

I wish him luck the rest of the year. Don't think there are any plans to run him on poly. So no BC trip.

They do mean nothing. Just be happy that you are able to witness a 4 year old campaign by Curlin.

Hey, I'm THRILLED we are watching Curlin run at 4. I just hope that he and the owner get the recognition they deserve for the horse's achievements at 4. Curlin's owner, unlike most, is actually being "sporting" about his approach to managing the horse. It's such an unusual approach that I don't know if we appreciate it anymore!

Between Curlin and Big Brown -- isn't it as simple a question as "who do you hate more?" -- LOL.

CURLIN, so underappreciated at 3

and everyone's superstar at 4.

This game is easy.

LOL. I like that.

The "unusal" aspect is interesting though.

This isn't subliminal advertising for your shoes, is it?

The problem for Curlin's case is that, if he continues on the path apparently laid out for him, his 2 biggest races will be overseas.. not in America (DWC & Arc??--or Japan Cup??) I don't believe those races get consideration (technically) when the voting is done. Besides, I can't see a TC winner NOT getting the HOY award these days... no matter what, if anything, BB does after the Belmont. (all of this, of course, is assuming BB and Curlin continue their winning ways)

seattle slew had a really good season at four, but lost HOY to affirmed. i can see if (IF!!) big brown wins the tc, he could get the nod.

but don't forget, affirmed continued to run after his belmont/tc triumph that year. i seriously doubt you see the same from big brown.

oh, and affirmed also gained a lot of respect as he had to battle the likes of alydar for the three wins. no alydars in this crop.
