Abreui a Yankee
Yanks get Bobby Abreui, by far the biggest trade thus far today. Good pick up for sure.

This is why baseball is a joke compared to football. What is their payroll now, over $200 million? Double every team in baseball.
They should have gotten a pitcher anyway. Not sure why they needed a bat with all the talent they have when healthy. |

I agree totally, wait to Lidle has to face the Red Sox, White Sox and Tigers. That 4.75 ERA is going Up Up Up.
Abreui is a fantastic player though and I think he'll be the next superstar in NY. Whether thats enough for them to make the playoffs remains to be seen. Me thinks not! |

Lidle is above average, to get him in thrown in WITH Abreu is unbelievable

Above average in the NL this year isnt necessarily going to translate to success in the AL. And he isnt exactly pitching shutouts or anything close to that. Hes a good pitcher but lets not get carried away. Probably the 4th or
5th best starter on the Yankees and they are not exactly known for strong starting pitching. |

from the Phillies standpoint, this is not so good
it's like when a company is losing a ton of money and instead of laying off the grunts they decide to axe the executives from an Yankees standpoint, add yet another executive their payroll, wow but they need some grunts, if you ask me Leyritz? Come on, that was the clutchest dinger ever |

Yes Somer. This is a great deal for the Yankees. Even without Lidle it would have been a great deal. Abreui can play the game.
Getting Lidle is like getting pickles on the already good sandwich. |

I guess Philly was just willing to give up the contract, as no one was buying.
Abreu gets 4.4 mil from the Yanks this year, 16 mil next, and a negotiation to buy out the 18 million option in 2008 worth 2 million. Lidle is really the key. Will he be able to step up to help the Yanks at the #3 or #4 spot in the rotation? Philly got nothing. Yes a top prospect - that needs a few years before he gets to majors as he is still raw. 2 relief pitchers, one finally coming around but relief only, the other probably fill-in material. And a fill-in catcher, if he makes it, nothing more.

I have no problem with the Yankees spending money. They havent won a world series with A Rod, Juice Box and or Sheffield. So why would they all of a sudden win one with Abreui?
And does Juice Box really make 20 mill a year? Wow. That has to have many honest guys scratching their heads. |

Its extremely unfair to categorize this move as typical Yankee spending. They were not very active in the free agent market before this season began and only had to pull the trigger on this trade because two stars have been injured for almost the whole year. Many fans(myself being one) thought when Sheffield went down after Matsui already had that our season was over with. Lets face it, the Yankees have been winning with guys named Cairo, Guiles, Cabrera, Phillips,a past his prime Williams, and Crosby. This is the best "team" that they have fielded in years. Arod has been a disaster and not contributing either.
The guts that these replacemnt players are showing has been great. And Wang and Mussina are as deserving of CY Yound consideration as anyone. The Yankees would never have made this trade if they were 5 games out of contention, they'd simply take the lumps. But when you trail Boston by 1/2 game as August comes with the players you have been filling holes with, you simply have to get another hitting outfielder in case either Sheff or Matsui doesnt come back in time to matter or not 100%. Its going to be tough to stop the Yankees now with Abreu and Cano definitely coming back. Now there is no pressure on either Matsui or Sheffield to return before they are 100% and when they do return can gear up towards being ready for postseason play, and believe me, the Yankees will have postseason play. |

You think ARod can't handle the pressure, wait until Abreu gets to town. His post all-star break collapse last year was a beauty, this year he's been mediocre at best...I don't think this will help the Yanks one bit.
All I get here is the Phillies and I love to root against them.....I'm sad Abreu is gone, him and Burrell are fun to watch suck.

that is a good point Orc about the Yanks being w/o two of their stars but, I'd just have to say take away both of their salaries, and they still have the highest payroll in baseball~P.S. who told you first about Mr. Phillips? I'm not a Yankee hater, but I'm not happy about this trade and Crown makes a good point as well in saying the Phils got nothing the Yankees can afford making trades that don't pan out "Jay Buhner!" but the Phillies can't, should have got a MLB-ready player(s) for what they gave away |

Ok - so not being in the all-star game makes you mediocre. Wow and #1 and #2 hitters above .400 in OBP equals 1 (Derek Jeter - with Ichiro Suzuki at .399). Oh yes Ichiro batted in that nice #3 spot quite often - Production? 61 Runs and 65 Rbis at this time must not be good enough. As I look above his name, the other names are nothing to sneeze about.
What worries me with Abreu gone, what will happen to Ryan Howard's or Burrell's production? who goes in the 3 hole? Burrell or Howard?
