Default Hall of Fame

I have a question. If you were told that they were going to overhaul the racing hall of fame and wanted you decide what the qualifications for selection were to be, what what those be? Would you say that in order to be in, you had to have been named HOY at least once? Or at least a divisional champion? Would you have to have raced a certain number of seasons or a certain number of races? Would you have to have a certain number of grade one wins (or if before they started grading them, the top races from your era)? What would be the criteria that a horse would have to meet in order for inclusion if you made the rules?

I knew I had thought about it before. Had forgotten that I'd actually asked the question. My mistake.

I'm gonna guess that Java Gold is not in the Hall Of Fame.

Only because of a West Coast bias.

Second best horse I've ever seen. Right Behind King Glorious. Neither would be in.

King Glorious was horrendous. He may have been as good as Forestry as far as sprinting 3yos (that occasionally stretchout) go.

I laughed. Lots of 2yos earn Beyers of about 104 and 110 (at a mile) and have the speed to run 6f in 1:08 4/5, 7f in 1:21 1/5, and also win the 9f Haskell as a 3yo. For whatever it's worth, McCarron once said that up to a mile, Sunday Silence and Easy Goer wouldn't have known what hit them. That's good enough for me. I've never limited what I think is good to what's good at nine or 10 furlongs on dirt.

Seriously, though, had he made it to either the Travers or Super Derby, he would have emulated Houston in the Santa Anita Derby that year.

Did hold 3rd-tier 3yos Roi Danzig and Music Merci at bay in the Ohio Derby and Haskell, respectively, though.

I know jockey opinions often don't mean much but again, for what it's worth, Gary Stevens said he thought that had KG remained healthy and running, he would have been favored in that SA Derby and not Sunday Silence.

How he would have done in the Travers or Super Derby is up for debate. I do know that lone speed is dangerous and I would have loved to have seen how it would have played out. I would have loved his chances. Also, nobody is saying that those fields he beat in the Ohio Derby and Haskell were anything special. But how were they worse than what Easy Goer was beating in the Gotham and Wood (Diamond Donnie, Rock Point, and Triple Buck) or what Sunday Silence was beating in the Super Derby and at Santa Anita (Big Earl and that same Music Merci)?

I think Music Merci got within 13 lengths at least.

But he was only within 2 lengths of King Glorious in New Jersey.

But it was a measured win by SS but I'm sure in his deathbed The Bald Eagle regrets missing out on The Ohio Derby
