If I owned a Kentucky Derby winner
providing it was a suitable type, I would aim it at the Epsom Derby.
1. You dont have to rush the horse back in 2 weeks for the Preakness, the horse would get about 6 weeks rest. 2. Instead of trying to become the 12th Triple Crown winner in history, the horse would be trying to become the first Kentucky / Epsom Derby winner. 3. I'm sure it would have worldwide coverage and be good news for the sport. Or would I eventually be pressurised into running it in the Preakness??

Well, lets see.
Does the triple crown still offer that 5 mil bonus. Or is that 5 mil total after purses and bonus? Don't forget the enormous hype going into stud duty a triple crown winner would receive. |

Maybe it was the flight for this crazy talk (as I was thinking this on the way home) but I was seeing if there was any way you could skip the Preakness with an injury free horse..The Derby double would be a great acheivement but a better feat would be to win the Kentucky Derby and then the Arc as it is THE race everyone in Europe wants to win. So that way you could still attempt the US triple crown, give the horse a well deserved rest, then ship to Europe, make sure to get in a prep race, ideally the Prix Niel, but I would like to prep in a G1 race rather than a G2. I would probably send the horse to Leopardstown for the Irish Champion Stakes or if I was feeling very adventureous, the St Leger, then the Arc.

if the horse wins the triple crown... no way he goes to the Arc because he will be LONG retired by then..
