MANCHESTER, Ky. – When Bill Sparkman told retired trooper Gilbert Acciardo that he was going door-to-door collecting census data in rural Kentucky, the former cop drew on years of experience for a warning: "Be careful."

The 51-year-old Sparkman was found this month hanged from a tree near a Kentucky cemetery with the word "fed" scrawled on his chest, a law enforcement official said Wednesday, and the FBI is investigating whether he was a victim of anti-government sentiment.

He obviously wasn't a victim ... he just commited suicide ... but wanted to reassure everyone that he ate a good meal beforehand.

just read an update. he wasn't hanged, but did die of asphyxiation. he was tied to a tree, but was in contact with the ground. it's thought that perhaps drug dealers may have killed him-perhaps the fact he was from the govt was enough for them to suspect he was dea? but you're right, cali would have no knowledge of drug related murders, type of weapon notwithstanding...

funny, most people i hear talking about getting rid of a section of the country mention california. maybe you should get into making that a reality.

State and federal law enforcement officials on Thursday dismissed the suggestion from a news service report that the man, William Sparkman, 51, may have been targeted because he worked for the federal government, calling that speculative.


"I think to give this impression that he was strung up because he was a federal employee is giving a bad impression to the nation," said David Beyer, spokesman for the FBI field office in Louisville, which is working with state officials on the investigation.


Beyer, who has worked in the FBI's Louisville office since 1993, said that violence against federal employees in Kentucky is rare.

"It's an unusual occurrence for a federal employee to be assaulted, and since I've been here there hasn't been one killed because of their employment. It's very unusual for that to occur."

While some in the media are being irresponsible and trying to portray this as some right wing people that are anti-government, the media is being irresponsible as usual.

You do not have to be very smart to see that this was likely drug related, not politically motivated. Drugs are responsible for this type of thing almost always.

i agree. speculation about someone tied naked to a tree with his census bureau id taped to his body and the word "fed" scrawled on his chest having anything to do with anti-government sentiment is completely irresponsible.
