Not that he's a monster or anything, but why wouldn't the connections of Stay Put(or any similar horse if there are any) run here instead of winning some allowance on Derby Day at 3/5?

Because about 500X the amount of people will be paying attention to a allowance race on derby day instead of the Lone Star Derby...

you think that many people were paying attention to an allowance race at 10:30 am eastern time?

And even if that were true, "attention" > graded stakes, money?

If you guys think that owners/trainers are above electing to rub elbows and get some face time during racing's biggest day, as opposed to racing at a weak track in a weak graded race simply for the black type/purse, you are lost....

if you were talking about first time owners or something like that you might have a small point. but the kleins have run in a enough big races and have had enough stakes horses that i dont think that was their motivation this time.

how much face time to you get for winning an allowance race while most of the west coast is asleep, 8 hours before the derby?

a) I didn't mention any owners by name, but since you did. Just take a look at the lack of noticeable ownership that have chosen not to enter the LS Derby this year...

b) A heck of a lot more face time than anyone will get this Saturday in Grand Prarie...

You completely missed the point both GG and Ateam were making. Whether you think it's a s.hitty race or not, the LS Derby is a Grade III. Graded races are worth more money, they show up in sales catalogs, N2X allowance races on Derby day do not.

Whether the owners of Stay Put or any other horse that was in the Derby day opener simply wanted seats for the day is a different issue. However, the choice to pass on a race worth more money with a grade is a little surprising.

i know you didnt mention any owners by name. the initial question was about stay put (or a similar horse). i thought it was a good question. but aside from being seen on derby day it doesnt make much sense to run in that allowance race over a 200k stake that is about the same quality wise.

since the original question was about stay put, i used his owners. they have been involved for a long time and campaigned enough stakes horses that i dont think the being seen thing was their motivation.

maybe they were looking for a confidence builder. didnt want to ship. something else. i dont think the point was to be seen. who were they looking to be seen by?

Five weeks actually. I would have gone to Texas had he been my horse. That race looks like it would be like shooting fish in a barrel for Stay Put or several of the other "not quite prime time" 3yo's.
Now, I can see why people want to run on Derby Day at CD. I don't know who the owners are but if they are Kentuckians, it's very important. (We see alot of this here at Saratoga.) Maybe they had others running on Derby Day, maybe they just wanted to be there for the big day, even though Stay Put didn't quite make the cut. Maybe the horse doesn't ship well or they could arrange transport.
Too bad really because some of the "secondary Derbies" often turn out to be interesting betting races, but this one just stinks.

They need to run this sometime between Preakness and Belmont to attract some horses that ran in the derby but aren't going in the Belmont.

My opinion is irrelevant, this is true.

Bottom line, Derby Day at CD is the only day in thoroughbred racing in which connections would rather run for allowance money instead of stakes money at a different track at a later date.

What is wrong with him running, except for the fact that my odds on him are now lower than they would have been next out?
