Top 4 stallions in the country by yearly earnings right now..
#1) Maria's Mon - Never won a race after early October of 2yo season.
#2) Malibu Moon - 1-for-2 lifetime - entire record consisted of two early season MSW sprints at age 2. #3) Distorted Humor - 1-for-10 lifetime in route races. Only career route win came in the Salvator Mile at Monmouth Park. #4) Smart Strike - Had an 8 race career ... one of his two total lifetime stakes wins came in the Salvator Mile. |

Breeding the best to the best and hoping for the best, doesn't always work

A horse like Spectacular Bid can go 24-for-24 between the distances of 7 furlongs to 10 furlongs - win 23 of those 24 races by a 1.5 lengths or more - win 14 of them by 5 lengths or more .. win 14 total Grade 1's and run the fastest Ragozin sheet figure of all-time and hold it for almost 20 years - be a champion at ages 2, 3, and 4 ... and he sucked horribly as a sire.
Yet a lot of these talented sprinters and fragile figure horses who accomplish little make excellent stallions. |

Danzig had a very short, unaccomplished career on the track.

Bid did pretty good as a broodmare sire .

Yep....you never know, which is why it is a good thing that I heard on TVG the other day that Zenyatta will almost surely be able to conceive immaculately, and won't have to bother with any stallion.

yep, three for three. makes him one of the best ever since he went undefeated...no, seriously-thank goodness woody stephens convinced them at claiborne to stand danzig. and he accomplished all his feats as a sire without covering more than 50-some mares a year.

Before Craig Perret took over the riding in The Islin, do you remember who rode him in the Salvator Mile without looking it up? Clue he also rode his more famous sister in the BC juvenile...

You are easier to handicap than a one horse race, saw that reply coming without even looking.

Would Zenyatta still just barely get up to beat an imaginary former claimer in this one horse race? You know, since she always seems to know exactly what she needs to do.

When stallions like MM...DH...SS... MalM...have genes in their pedigrees filled with champions and/or sires of champions, the regression to the mean in breeding likely results in a superior individual "becasue 80%" of the genes represented in these stallions pedigrees came from champion race horses. That is what they breeder meant when he said "breed the best to the best and hope for the best" Success on the track does not guarantee breeding success...only syndication/sales success initially. Those stallions you referenced have exceptional pedigrees...MM was injured early in his career and retired. How many stallions are around by Wavering Monarch these days? MM has a gene pool of several "immortal" TB's. As for Distorted Humor...exceptional pedigree too...filled with all star racers and sires. That "old skinflint" Reineniman owned and raced Distorted Humor...that same owner that raced KD winner WE on a NASCAR track under a major freeway in IN. Reineneman STILL maintained that WE "wasn't that kind of horse(a Kentucky Derby type) after Baffert bought him. (Nuckols is one of those "old time, hardboot" breeders and was in a partnership with Reineman...Nuckols provided the mares and Reineman raced the progeny....to their detriment since most never reached their potential owned by Reineman a la WE and DH) Malibu Moon raced twice. But his pedigree is sensational..filled with champion racers/sires..AP Indy...SS...SEC... Success on the track does not guarantee breeding success...only syndication/sales success initially. All these stallions have exceptional pedigrees top and bottom....and are marketed by experts after initial progeny successes...DH/FC, i.e. A tb's race record is influenced by the owner/ trainer. HOF Baffert training a TB for a millionaire owner vs Springer (a v.good trainer) training for a skinflint like Reinenman(was) is like competing with a graduate of Phillips Exeter vs a graduate of PS 123.
