9/8 (DMR): Del Mar Futurity (G1)
This has got to be the least talented field for this race in recent memory.
The quality here looks more like a Cal-bred stakes, than a Grade 1. Anyone have any thoughts on this one? 8th (5:30) Del Mar Futurity (G1) 7 Furlongs (All Weather Track) | Open | 2 Year Olds Stakes | Purse: $250,000 1 1 Jaycito Garcia M Mitchell Mike 116 L 12-1 2 2 Riveting Reason Solis A Cho Myung Kwon 116 L 12-1 3 3 McKenzies Way Flores D R Troeger Robert 118 L 8-1 4 4 J P's Gusto Valenzuela P A Hofmans David 122 L 5-2 5 5 Just Imagine Pedroza M A O'Neill Doug 116 L 20-1 6 6 Major Art (GB) Smith M E Kruljac J Eric 118 FTL 8-1 7 7 Western Mood Rosario J Hollendorfer Jerry 118 L 7-2 8 8 Indian Winter Bejarano R Hollendorfer Jerry 118 L 5-1 9 9 Comma to the Top Nakatani C S Miller Peter 116 L 20-1 10 10 Road Ready Espinoza V Bonde Jeff 120 L 8-1 11 11 Gahnzo Bob Quinonez A Pender Michael 116 Blk-On L 30-1 Last edited by Kasept : 09-08-2010 at 05:56 AM. |

This was hard for me to handicap with no Smash, and no Baffert at all... Here is is though.
Race:8 Handicapper Picks:2-5-4 Race Notes:#2 RIVETING REASON looks like a long shot with a big chance in the Grade 1 Del Mar Futurity. This guy has shown different running styles in his 2 career races so far. First time out he was off slowly and closed well to run third, second time out he showed sharp speed and just got nailed late to finish second after being pressed every step of the race. 12-1 on the morning line is generous even though this guy is still a maiden. Note the trainers recent success in this race. #5 JUST IMAGINE has been well bet in his first 2 career starts, only to be a disappointment so far. Leading trainer Doug O’Neil is in the headlines recently for another positive drug test on his horses. Don’t put it past the all time great chemist to have this guy ready to fire a huge shot today now that the price will be right. #4 JP’S GUSTO will be a well deserved post time favorite. He has sharp speed and has shown he can win from just off the pace. It would be a nice ending to Patrick Valenzuela’s comeback to pick up this Grade 1. |

I was tempted to like Just Imagine because you made such a great case for him.

When was the last time this race was absent of any horse from either Baffert, Mandella or Sadler?
I have no idea if I'll play this race, but I am putting together a PK 4. I'm leaning towards tossing JP's Gusto, Western Mood and Just Imagine hoping that a new face emerges from this field. Anyone have any info on the Euro shipper that's in Kruijac's barn? Is it a prep for the BC Juvy turf, or is this horse live? He's been pretty good at spotting his horses at the del mar meet. |

Im with you on tossing the first 2, but why Just Imagine? He is 20-1 on the morning line, the trainer is ON FIRE, and he has been under 3-1 in his 2 career starts. If the tote board has been right and there is talent there, he can be dangerous. Im also now sure how he is not a new face? |

I'll have to go back and see if he had any real excuses, but with his pedigree, he may move up when he gets to run at Hollywood or the new SA dirt course in the winter. |

JP's Gusto looks really tough but I'll try and beat him with 50 Win on 2-Riveting Reason and 7-Western Mood

He was just getting rolling at the end, and didn't have a great trip. Hope you made some $$ on this time, as you won't see that price again on him.
