An Open Note to Nascar1966
NASCAR, despite what you may think, I am an intelligent person. I am smart enough to look at your profile here on DT and it sheds light into the person you are. I commend you on your military service, my father and grandfather were both Navy men, Vietnam and WWII, my mothers side of the family were all Marines and Army... I understand and respect those that serve our country and I thank you for your service. If you're like members of my family, you went into service directly out of high school and if you had time, you got a college degree when you left - I don't know about you but only my uncle and Dad got degrees, everyone else just got a job to support their family. Several of my Dad's siblings and cousins became cops after service and that's why I was one too after I flunked out of college my senior year (I finally finished my bachelors degree a decade later and am a thesis away from my masters degree). I finally grew up, figured out what I wanted to do with my life and found things that make me happy - horse racing is a big part of my happiness.
I know you love this country and you're frustrated by what is happening to it. Despite what you may believe, the current President is not the cause of all of our problems, it's the political system and the current climate of political discourse. Blindly hating a man and disparaging him won't solve the nations problems, actively engaging in discussion about the problem and bringing people together in ideas that lead towards solutions is far more helpful. Insults have helped to create the current problems, do you really feel the need to continue that? *We all have far more in common than we realize, but we let pundits and politicians at the extremes tell us who is good and who is evil. *At the individual level, we need to be able to say, "we may have our differences but I accept your opinion, so long as you can articulate it, help me to understand it, yet see my side as well". *Can you accept that? If you'd like continue the status quo, then you'll do what you want to do. I am extending an olive branch in hopes of finding the things we have in common and understanding our differences. At the very least, as a military man, I would hope that you show me the respect due a woman, which you may not realize I am - I know you were taught respect with your background. * Respectfully, DerbyCat

So glad you approve, although it unfortunately appears that Mr. Nascar will completely ignore my attempt at civility and instead he will continue his narrow-minded and "angry rant at how Obama is ruining this country" postings.
An individual who understands that life is complex and multifaceted knows that you must be able to see both sides of a viewpoint and be able to argue your side with facts, not propaganda and insults. Unfortunately, it appears Mr. Nascar is an old dog who can't learn new tricks - and I'm allowed to call him an old dog because we were born the same year and I know I have a heck of a time learnin' new tricks! Until he wants to actually engage in a logical and truthful discussion, I think I need to be done with this, Narrow minded simpletons bore me

18th birthday at boot camp. I only have an associate's which I completed while still in the Navy. Lots of 14 hour days with work, school, and studying. I commend on your education that you have achieved. I know all the blame can't be put on Obama, but he is always pointing the fingers at the Republicans. How can he blame it all the time on the Republicans. As a another peace offering I will take down my avatar and quote. |

NASCAR, you upset folks here because you blindly support one side without seeing both sides - you are a Rebublican puppet who appears to parrot the right-wing talking points... But you're not alone, there are others here that do the same thing, on both sides. People don't have fun "arguing" with you because you can't even acknowledge that the other side has a point. What hurts you the most is when you insult people because they disagree with you. There's no need to tell someone they are a moron or that they should crawl under a rock just because their opinion is different from yours. If you don't like what they say, simply say, "I don't agree with you, you haven't changed my opinion". People can respect that, they just get defensive when you insult them. I have no doubt that you're a good guy in person and I'd probably enjoy sitting down and having a beer with you at the track. Try not to insult people and I'd bet more DTers would be far more receptive to you. Thank you for accepting my olive branch, I do appreciate it. DC

I will give you credit your right on some points. I could care less if the President is Democratic or Republican as long as they are doing good for this country is my pet peeve. Im sure alot of people feel the same way. I have put down the Republicans a few times in the past. Do you think its ok for someone to bring up a person's family member when talking about something? jms62,
I can't see you. Say whatever you want to say about me. Im sure your writing here that im a racist. Thats the way you want to be go for it. I guess it's okay for you to bring my son into the conversation. If I brought a member of your family into it not only would you be crying wolf but you would accuse me of being a racist. The only way we all can have a civilized discourse and discussion on politics and society is if we are able to articulate our opinion, back it up with facts and keep an open mind to the other persons viewpoint. As soon as we resort to attacking and insults, we've lost the argument. When you respond to insults, you empower the person who insulted you. The only way to get respect on this board is to show respect. If you give respect and get only insults back, then you either need to put that person on ignore or leave the board - it's a losing battle to try to keep fighting a dumb*ss, all it does is drive you crazy and the dumb*ss is so dumb, he doesn't care.
