Default MAR FIGHT: Stewards hand down rulings/fines

Stewards’ rulings regarding running and aftermath of Breeders’ Cup Marathon on Friday, Nov. 5

After waiving his right to a formal hearing before the Board of Stewards, jockey Calvin Borel was fined $5,000 (the maximum fine allowed) for conduct against the best interest of horse racing on the association grounds (Churchill Downs) for his actions in the winner’s circle following the fifth race at Churchill Downs on Nov. 5, 2010.After waiving his right to a formal hearing before the Board of Stewards, jockey Javier Castellano was fined $2,500 for conduct against the best interest of horse racing on the association grounds for his actions in the winner’s circle following the fifth race at Churchill Downs on Nov. 5, 2010.After a hearing before the Board of Stewards, jockey Javier Castellano has been suspended six racing days (Nov. 11 through Nov. 14 and Nov. 17 through Nov. 18) for causing interference at the five-sixteenths pole and necessitating a disqualification in the fifth race at Churchill Downs on Nov. 5, 2010

I have never heard of a 6 day suspension

Is that because it happened in a race that we never run outside of the BC?

It's a new punishment for a new infraction called "Herding". See the Fat Man.

Perhaps his purse winnings in the BC races will cover the fine.

Nice Birthday gift for Calvin. ESPN and ABC should pay him 50K for using the fight as a promo for Sat.

More awkward fight: Borel-Castellano or Jeff Gordon and Jeff Burton at today's NASCAR race? It was a weekend filled with midget wrasslin!

Borel Showed how uneducated he really is! Yes Castellano interfered, but Martin Garcia was in more jeopardy than Calvin...I can't believe that Calvin didn't get days for his actions...seems like a slap on the hand to me!

I loved the stance he took with Castellano and only had hoped that Garcia would have helped instigate also. We could have seen a real a$$ kicking take place. Now that would have created viewership baby.
John Sadler didn't seem too happy with him Friday.

While I respect your opinion, how do you gauge Calvin's level of education? Do you know him personally or have you just heard him speak? Or is it that he did not finish high school? One does not need to be formally schooled to be educated nor does one have to speak in formal, proper english. i surely dont.

Calvin has forgot more about race riding and horsemanship that we will ever know. He isnt the greatest jock, but he commands respect from the horseman. While Javi is known as a nice guy and good rider, his actions were reckless and could have permanently injured those guys.

Contrary to all the touchy feelys we have now a days, stuff happens and sometimes it needs to be handled just as it was....when you scrap at places like Cajun Downs and the Quarter Pole, you dont take it lightly when someone threatens your career.

Well ask his old room mate Jockey Joe Johnson...He will tell ya that Calvin can't read or write very well...that's a justification for my statement

How much does the man really need to "read or write" when he's buying a new car in cash? I mean, really?

I said the same thing about LAT, and was told Pletcher was'nt "aware" of it because he was in some room, and that basically it was'nt his fault. I know I saw him with my own eyes standing there looking at her as she was going in the gate and did nothing. I agree with you as well about her suffering a heart attack while running because there was obviously something not right with the mare.

We have all seen "educated" people act in the same manner, so not sure how that comes into play. Calvin is merely guilty of using poor judgment and allowing his emotions to take over.. No amount of education can prevent that from happening.

I don't recall anyone ever saying he was the classiest of guys either.

And they put Burton and Gordon in the same ambulance. Barnum & Bailey in a telephone booth. Burton was at fault, and he did apologize.
