Default Beyer speed figure question

I notice in the 9th race at SA a horse named Privalged won a race on FEB 19 2011 going :20.8 :43 :55.6 1:08 and he only got an 87 beyer. He was no more than a half length off the lead at any time during the race. It was also on a wet track. Can someone explain to me this low figure?

Where he was during the race is irrelevant when calculating a Beyer. All that matters is final time, which is adjusted based on the track variant. Santa Anita has to be the fastest dirt track in the country, so keep that in mind when looking at times from there. . .

There was no track variant posted in the DRF.

Further tarnishing the performance, on the same card the 3yo filly Mildly Offensive won first time out in maiden special weight company in a faster final time than the older male Privilaged did a couple of races later. Coincidentally, Home Sweet Aspen, who starts in today's La Brea, was second in that maiden race.

The Beyer guys have their own variant that they use to calculate the fig. . . It's not printed.

I thought that since the SA dirt track was brand new last year, there was not a variant published because there was nothing to compare it against.

Also, looking back at the charts for that day, Privileged ran a 1:08.76, not 1:08 flat as the op seems to suggest. The other winning times that say for 6f at SA were 110.23, 109.3, 109.5, 108.92, and the previously mentioned 108.25. So on that track for that day a time of 108.76 was not exceptional and would not warrant a huge figure.

SA 9th race winner Frumious ran pretty impressively. He was 2/5th of a second second short of the track record at that distance. That race was very vert competitive on paper and a possible key race. 3 or 4 next out winners to look out for. Jeff Bonde may have his top sprinter for 2012.
