Republican Senate Nominee:"Victims Of ‘Legitimate Rape’ Don’t Get Pregnant"
This is why we need to strengthen, not weaken, our national support of good education for everybody.
I hope this how-sex-works uneducated fool doesn't have daughters he discusses sex with. Quote:

googled due to the thread title. this was the first on the page to come up.
http://2012.talkingpointsmemo.com/20...imate-rape.php if it's the same as what riot posted, my apologies. “If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.” the more times i read that line from the article, the angrier i get. apparently if a woman (according to this creature) gets pregnant, i guess it wasn't a legitimate rape. i am absolutely stunned and sickened by his comments. |

scary:
The PollTracker Average shows Akin leading McCaskill by a margin of 49.7 percent to 41.3 percent. After the interview caused a firestorm, Akin said in a statement that he “misspoke.” yeah, sure you did. sure you did. |

Every political season I think I’ve heard just about everything–every bit of contrived nonsense, smarmy half-truths and blatant lies that anyone could come up with. And then along comes someone like Republican Senate Nominee Todd Akin with a statement that isn’t only stunning in its ignorance, but sinks the level of debate so far into the mud that it’s frankly beyond belief. In an interview (shown in full here) about his position on abortion, Rep. Todd Akin, the Republican nominee for Senate in Missouri who is running against Sen. Claire McCaskill, justified his opposition to abortion rights even in case of rape with a claim that victims of “legitimate rape” have unnamed biological defenses that prevent pregnancy. Quoting Akin: ““First of all, from what I understand from doctors [pregnancy from rape] is really rare…If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.” and this, from ap...akin's 'clarification'. or not... http://hosted2.ap.org/APDEFAULT/3d28...ea0b04b3de41ba Akin said in an emailed statement later Sunday that he "misspoke" during the interview, though the statement did not say specifically which points. "In reviewing my off-the-cuff remarks, it's clear that I misspoke in this interview and it does not reflect the deep empathy I hold for the thousands of women who are raped and abused every year," Akin's statement said. "Those who perpetrate these crimes are the lowest of the low in our society and their victims will have no stronger advocate in the Senate to help ensure they have the justice they deserve."Akin also said in the statement he believes "deeply in the protection of all life and I do not believe that harming another innocent victim is the right course of action." i call bullsh!t, and this is why: Federal law prevents federal Medicaid funds and similar programs from paying for abortions. Yet the law also contains an exception for women who are raped. The bill Akin and Ryan (yes, that ryan...romney's choice for vp) cosponsored would have narrowed this exception, providing that only pregnancies arising from “forcible rape” may be terminated. Because the primary target of Akin and Ryan’s effort are Medicaid recipients — patients who are unlikely to be able to afford an abortion absent Medicaid funding — the likely impact of this bill would have been forcing many rape survivors to carry their rapist’s baby to term. Michelle Goldberg explains who Akin and Ryan would likely target: Under H.R. 3, only victims of “forcible rape” would qualify for federally funded abortions. Victims of statutory rape—say, a 13-year-old girl impregnated by a 30-year-old man—would be on their own. So would victims of incest if they’re over 18. And while “forcible rape” isn’t defined in the criminal code, the addition of the adjective seems certain to exclude acts of rape that don’t involve overt violence—say, cases where a woman is drugged or has a limited mental capacity. “It’s basically putting more restrictions on what was defined historically as rape,” says Keenan. Although a version of this bill passed the GOP-controlled House, the “forcible rape” language was eventually removed due to widespread public outcry. Paul Ryan, however, believes that the “forcible rape” language does not actually go far enough to force women to carry their rapist’s baby. Ryan believes that abortion should be illegal in all cases except for “cases in which a doctor deems an abortion necessary to save the mother’s life.” So rape survivors are out of luck |

and lookie what i found here. what a prick!!
http://thehill.com/blogs/ballot-box/...eless-children Rep. Todd Akin (R-Mo.) voted against the creation of a national sex offender registry and against reauthorizing a program that assists runaway and homeless children. Both bills passed by wide margins with strong bipartisan support in the Republican-controlled House. Akin was one of 52 congressmen to vote in 2005 against the creation of a national sex offender registry database that required those convicted of a sex crime to register before completing a prison term and increased mandatory sentences for those convicted of molesting children. |

Ryan and Akin are much more morally consistent than politicians who oppose abortion except in the cases of rape and incest. Opposing legal abortion except in cases of rape and incest means that the pregnancy is intended to punish a woman for having consensual sex. Which says some pretty awful things about how that person views pregnancy, childbirth and babies.
On some level, though, Akin knows it's a pretty awful position to hold, ergo his attempt to justify it by saying, well, raped women don't get pregnant anyway. Can you imagine a rapist using that as as defense? Well, your Honor, she got pregnant, so clearly she was asking for it. Not to mention a rapist then extending a paternity claim and demanding visitation rights as a way to keep himself in a woman's life, regardless of how she feels about it. Pennsylvania Congressman Freind claimed something similar about rape and pregnancy, back in the 1980's. I think he claimed women secreted some kind of mysterious substance during rape that stopped them from getting pregnant. But this is very consistent with the GOPs policy agenda regarding women's rights since 2010- limit abortion, reduce access to affordable contraception (and of course, it's the hormonal contraceptives and the IUD they object to, which, purely coincidentally I'm sure, are the forms of contraception women can go on without their partners having any say about or even knowledge of. It's really not surprising at all if one's been following legislation passed at the state levels since 2010.

Here's a heartwarming story about where no abortion except in cases where the doctors believe the woman's (or girl's, in this case) life is in danger leads:

The GOP is voting on their abortion party platform tomorrow, very strict, very anti-woman. This is 2012 - the GOP needs to get their big government out of the vaginas of American women, period. This is not the damn Puritan era where a bunch of old white men decide what women can and cannot do. And don't forget Missouri has alread elected this lunatic Atkin to Congress five times. Many in MO second district are just fine with his complete lack of science education and knowing how sex works - and trying to legislate his ignorance into being for everyone to suffer from.
