Is Marvin Lewis a much better coach than what he gets credit for?
He's survived in Cincy for a long time now, when that place was a pit of hell before he got there.
His owner is a freaking cheapskate. He reportedly does a lot of annoying little things like charging players for gatorade instead of buying it for them. Unlike most every other team, they let their top free agents getaway. Imagine how good the Bengals defense would be if they didn't let both Justin Smith and Johnathon Joseph get away? Every year, the Bengals seem to lead the NFL in salary cap space. They're an NFL best $54 million under the cap again this year. The guy has withstood a tightwad owner and decade long bad losing tradition the Bengals had...and that team has made the playoffs two years in a row playing in the same division as Pittsburgh and Baltimore. A lot of people think he is a sh!t coach though, for some reason. Never really understood why. He's had useful QB's in Carson Palmer and Andy Dalton...but he's not a coach who gets completely carried by top flight QB play. |

I've been a Bengals fan since the mid 70's which, of course, hasn't always been a easy thing to do. My Kenny Anderson replica jersey comes out every time they're on TV.
I like Marvin and I think he's a good coach. Mike Zimmer is good too. I'm not sure ownership has done the Bengals any favors over the years and pursuing and hanging on to some players that end up being more of a distraction than productive has been a problem. It's been great to watch them over the last two years - I think they'll be even better this year which means I believe they'll be competitive with the best in the AFC and therefore best in the game.

i think he's the first coach to actually have more career wins than losses with cincy, they're that bad.

It appears that owner Mike Brown's record is 115-204-1, so Marvin is boosting that win percentage.
Nice.

Ahh, memories. I was taken to the woodshed by most on here stating that no way should marvin Lewis get fired after the 2010 season. I was absolutely brutalized by all involved. I should go back and look for that. I did go back and look. It was ugly. DaHoss and ateam are just really mean people!!! They really don't like me. I think all 3 of us are right. The Bengals have made the playoffs every year since that thread and they still have zero playoff wins!! good thing I never come on here anymore. It's for the best.

Doug, you have a grammatical pet peeve of mine in the title of this thread. The 'what' is completely unnecessary. It's something I hear buffoon color commentators like Troy Aikman say all the time: "He's playing way better than what he was last year" and it drives me nuts.
Oh, and for the eternal victim up there, his argument was never that Lewis was a good coach statistically or strategically. It was always something meaningless like "Lewis is old school, he's a nice guy, he's a straight talker", etc. and therefore he shouldn't be fired. |

your qoutes are flat out lies, and were never my argument at any point in that thread. My argument was always the team improved significantly when Lewis became head coach. I am now intrigued by the routine where you spread lies and falsities, I may have to return more often now for a couple months of pure entertainment. I do occasionally look at threads on here, but refrain from posting. I was very shocked to see a Marvin Lewis thread as I remember vividly that "discussion" where crap was thrown my way. Blame Calzone for my return.

It's pretty sad, when you can actually go look at that thread. It's still there.
