After he perfectly saved ground and rode the skin off of her for four furlongs? His mount was 2nd best.

His mount might have been 2nd best, but that doesn't mean those who bet on the horse don't deserve a full effort. 2nd best horses win all the time.

You don't say!

In all seriousness, his mount was under such a ride at the half-mile pole that the announcer noted it. He kept him inside to save ground, had dead aim, took over and got passed inside the sixteenth pole. His horse was finishing second at that point. Desormeaux deserves criticism for doing some of this in the past, but today was not one of those occasions in my opinion.

Couldn't agree more that he rode a hell of a race up to that point. I just disagree with the idea that he had no chance of winning if he continued through the wire. The margin was too close to know either way in my opinion.

Cost me a small p5, so a little biased. That said, i agree that KD rode the hair off the 3 horse and then thought he had put the lead horse away and relaxed late thinking he wins the race and never saw the 4 until ttoo late. I believe he has a history w /this type thing in his past, no ?

Yes, big time. This article is from a long time ago, but you get the picture:

"If he saw he wasn't going to win a race he couldn't understand why he should keep riding. I told him I have a lot of clients who need those third- and fourth-place checks. I also told him to ride his own horse and quit riding (trying to maneuver) other people's horses in races."

And I know some on here weren't all that pleased with his finish in the 2010 KD on Paddy O'Prado:

#3 galloped out better than the winner, suggesting that the #4 was all out, but the #3 not as much.

Some jockeys never let their horses gallop out much. I think its overrated. Some late running sprinters will gallop out past everyone around the turn giving everyone false hopes for stretching out.
