Uncle Chuck to Enter Stud at Journeyman Stud

Graded stakes winner Uncle Chuck will enter stud in 2022 at Brent and Crystal Fernung's Journeyman Stud near Ocala, Fla., the farm announced Dec. 3.

Would have been nice if he entered a race in 2021.

Uncle Chuck is currently being syndicated by Journeyman Stud and Taylor Made Farm and will stand the 2022 breeding season for $6,500 with a live foal guarantee.

At least there’s a live foal guarantee. No guarantee that it will ever make it to the races, though…

The son of leading sire Uncle Mo out of grade 1-placed, grade 2 winner Forest Music, by Unbridled's Song, is a half brother to Maclean's Music , who is the co-leader of his sire class by number of grade 1 winners with four. Uncle Chuck also is a half brother to grade 3 winners Kentuckian and Electric Forest.

Forest Music won five stakes during her racing career, including the 2005 Honorable Miss Handicap (G2) and placed in the 2004 Prioress Stakes (G1) and Test Stakes (G1).

Who’d of thunk that Forest Music, the filly that genius Michael Gill et al. ran in the BC Juvenile Fillies at Santa Anita 17 days after breaking her maiden in a sprint debut at Laurel (she ran last by many) would be considered “the rock” of the family…

Uncle Chuck was bred in Kentucky by Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings and bought by Three Amigos for $250,000 out of the Summerfield consignment at the 2018 Keeneland September Yearling Sale.

Too bad Steve Martin, Chevy Chase, and Martin Short couldn’t bring some level-headedness to this infamy…

The colt went to trainer Bob Baffert and was raced by longtime partners Mike Pegram, Karl Watson, and Paul Weitman. Uncle Chuck broke his maiden at 3 at Santa Anita Park, running a mile June 12 under jockey Mike Smith, winning wire-to-wire by seven lengths. His performance generated a 96 Equibase Speed Figure .

He was so dominate, the 3rd place horse is running in a $8k claimer at Los Alamitos this weekened.

By the way, what is implied when a stallion advert uses Equibase Speed Figures instead of some of the more popular ones?

I came up with two possibilities: (1) his numbers from those sources are poor, or (2) there was a paywall when they tried to look up the numbers on their respective websites…

His next start was in the Los Alamitos Derby (G3) July 4 when he beat stablemate and grade 2 winner Thousand Words by four lengths at the wire. After completing a mile in 1:35.80, Uncle Chuck finished the final eighth of a mile in :11.85 for a final time of 1:47.65 and earned another 96 ESF.

I think I did one of these for Thousand Words like 8 months ago. Based on his own career, my guess is that it was less than a thousand words long…

The 3rd place finisher was a maiden named Cosmo; he runs for $32k claimers as recently as last month.

The ill-fated Great Power was running for less than $3k this year.

Uncle Chuck's performance at Los Alamitos Race Course earned him a shot in the Runhappy Travers Stakes (G1) to be run 35 days later.

35 days? Are they trying to rep this as “running right back”? Or are they just building up the drama for the epic battle that was about to ensue?

He broke from the gate as a 5-2 second choice to eventual winner Tiz The Law and led for the opening six furlongs before fading in the stretch.

What the hell was the point of that?

Was he up for champion sprinter based on that running line or something?

Thanks; I thought he had cracked a 100 BSF in the LA Derby but apparently not.

He did not look good down the lane in the Travers.

This was Baffert's KY Derby horse ever so briefly after he fried 2 or 3 horses (Charlatan and the other horse that officially won his AR Derby division the same day he crossed the wire first) and doubts were raised about Authentic's stamina after he had lost the SA Derby.

Wonder what could have been if he took it slow with Uncle Chuck a la Arrogate.

Eh...it probably would have been the same result, just a different Grade 3 win and a different Grade 1 flop before a failed comeback at 4.
