RIP Cannon Shell
I just saw on X that Carlo Vaccarezza is reporting the passing of Chuck Simon, our dear Cannonshell. My condolences to all.
Back in 2006, Chuck was kind enough to offer me a job when I was going through some hard times. His generosity, and his wonderful writings will be missed. Rest well, my friend. |

The first time I met Chuck was at fairgrounds. Dee tee had just bought sumwonlovesyou, and he was kind enough to free up some time for us to visit, get some pics, and grab some lunch. We later went to churchill for one of her races. At dinner later, I was telling him how much I liked randy Romero. Next thing I know, he's handing me his phone and saying here, talk to randy.
I was hoping he could beat this. And I'm so sad that he is gone. My condolences to his friends and family. He was a great guy, and im glad I had some time that was spent with him. I would like to think he's hanging out with Harley and Hank.

Chuckles
Man, what a wonderful person. Someone who wore his heart on his sleeves with a passion for horses and people like very few. Humble and graceful, he will be a great addition to heaven.
I learned as much about being a good person as horses from Chuck. God's love to him and all. Scott

I'm very sad....Chuck impacted my life in so many ways both through Horses but also conversation. When he stayed with us for the Million weekend the sight of him hauling 4 chihuahuas in was priceless. Richie Scherer, now Chuck...it just isn't fair...RIP big man.

Chuck was great to argue with because you at least knew that his opinion was coming from the right place. He was very passionate about the sport and always fought the good fight. Condolences to all who knew him and loved him. It’s a testament to who he was as a person that you never hear anyone say a bad word about him.

Gee awful to hear this. You could always tell his love of horses and the game. Was wondering where he was as he used to be a pretty prolific poster around here.

I lost contact with CS and I'm sorry for that.
He was a great guy and good person! I'm thankful for the access he gave us and all he taught us. CS will be missed!

It sucks completely unfair. A young man was claimed. We have lasting memories of how he touched us individually and enriched our lives and the racing community—well played, Sir.

Was nice to see his former assistant Cherie DeVaux win the BC Mile and talk about Chuck and how much he meant to her.
