Deer Hunting & Running

So off I go today for my run. I decide to run to the local college because I am in the mood for some trail running and they have these really cool trails in the middle of the woods, miles and miles.

I get about 100 yards and I start thinking, "Hey stupid, its deer hunting season." I am so pumped to be in the woods on this soft dirt trail (great on my aching knees) that I ignore my better judgement and keep running. I get maybe 200 more yards in and start to see tree stands popping up all over the place. I start thinking, "I dont want to die today, the Malibu is only 1 week away", so I stop on a dime, turn around and sprint out of the woods faster than I have ever sprinted before. Figured going this fast, there would be little chance of a deer hunter hitting me.

In case you are too refined to know what a tree stand is, its a little makeshift fort that hunters build up on a tree so they can stand and get a good look at the innocent deer they're about to pop a cap in. Also it makes for a great place to put their bottle of liquor and porno magazines.

funny you mention this subject...the last day of muzzleloader season in VT was sunday the 10th...
I work on a large farm 500+ acres most of which is wooded and posted as a private game refuge...we do not allow any hunting or trapping. As a result we have a good sized deer herd (kept in check by the coyotes) with a few trophy sized buck...a 12 pointer was sniffing the bumper of my car about 2 weeks ago...
so anyway on the 10th (last day don't forget) I hear a shot from the woods at about 9:15 in the morning...freaks out the horses and they all start running like fools...but then I never hear another sound and I put it out of my head...later that afternoon I go out walking with my dad and our 3 dogs and guess what...some ass hole, coward who couldn't get a deer the legal way decided to tresspass on our property and poach one...we found the gut pile and a bloody trail where the guy had dragged it out...
Best part? he had shot the deer from up on a hill...towards the padoock where my horses were and towards a well used path that neighbors walk their dogs on etc...nice to know that in addition to being a thief and a coward he is also an unsafe hunter.

NY regs...
Northern zone closed Dec 3. Southern zone closed on Dec 10.
Muzzle loaders went to Dec 19 in the Southern zone, Northern, Dec 10.
You have nothing to worry about. Enjoy your run.
Just don't dress in a buckskin jogging outfit and any headgear involving antlers should be left home. Also, never, never, never let a white handkerchief be tucked into the back of your belt.

always best to wear some hunter orange anytime hunting season is in full swing. even if it's not officially gun season, i'd wear at least a neon orange hat.

as for the stands, due to # of unsafe hunters who think anything two- or four-legged must be a deer, it's too unsafe to hunt on the ground.

Not all hunters are ignorant a-holes, nor do they keep alcohol and porno mags in their treestands...

I don't know of many hunters looking at porno mags in their tree stands.

Maybe you can improve your times by running fast through there, they probably won't be able to hit you if you are moving fast...

I am pretty sure I ran past a dead guy one morning at 4am, he was just laying there in the grass, he was either dead or too drunk to get up, either way I wasn't going to stick around to find out...

A couple of years ago on a very mild Nov or Dec day, I was riding my mountain bike with a friend on those same trails, maybe 1/2 mile from the college's (Skidmore) campus. We start to see blood in the middle of the trail, keeps getting more and more. Sure enough we bike like maybe another 100 yards and see this hick dragging a just shot deer right down the bike path. He sees us and drops the deer, swings his gun around in our direction and just stands there staring, laughing at us. We turn around and head back in the other direction, very very fast.

Thats why I was very hesitant to run on those trails. They are illegal to hunters but some people cant abide by rules.
