MMSC brought it up last week but there hadn't been any confirmation until now as far as I know...it's too bad, colic sucks

it does suck. has robbed the sport of some terrific horses over the years.

I was actually thinking closer to home...I lost my best buddy to colic a year ago.

thanks...like I said it was a year ago so I'm past it (mostly)...but I loved that horse desperately...more than is healthy probably

How much of these diseases Thoroughbreds have is bred specific.Do other breeds have this much Colic,Laminitis etc.? Is it pretty much the same,or increased?

the diseases themselves are pretty much the same in all breeds...but management issues make them turn up more often in certain disciplines...

Virtually any horse is susceptible to colic... age, sex, and breed differences don't seem to matter all that much. The type of colic seen appears to relate to location, due to environmental factors such as sandy soil or climatic stress. We saw a lot of horses get impaction colic down here due to ingesting too much sand as they pull the grass from its roots. One of our horses would get colic routinely twice a year when he got his shots. We had banamine in the fridge available ALWAYS.

I hate colic... we lost too many at our barn from it. Sad...
