Bob Baffert won the Kings Bishop with a Gio Ponti think about that for a minute.

To be fair, Gio Ponti wasn't supposed to be a turf horse. Tale of the Cat out of an Alydar mare. His 2nd dam was the nice mare Salt Spring whose PPs are worth a look if you like looking at the old Cali Distaffers. Royal Heroine, Princess Rooney, Fact Finder.

There is quite a lot of turf horses throughout both Gio Ponti's sire line and bottom side. Salt Spring was a top level turf mare in CA as you hinted at.

But as you said, what Freddy fails to consider is that the grandsire Tale of the Cat sires a lot of one turn horses and won the very same race himself in 1997.
