Seeing the Molly Pitcher stakes listed with the Monmouth Park entries on Haskell Day brings back great memories of years ago in central New Jersey. There are a number of theories about who Molly really was, and she could have been a composite of many women who played an active part in the American Revolutionary War. The most common story is about the wife of an artilleryman at the Battle of Monmouth in June 1778 who brought water to the troops from a nearby well on an extremely hot day, and when her husband was wounded she took her place at the cannon. There is a state park near Freehold, NJ that is supposed to be the site of Molly Pitcher's Well.

In late high school and early college days in Monmouth County, NJ, I was active in a local sports car club that conducted frequent sports car road rallies. One of the regular events on the June calendar was named The Molly Pitcher Rally, and the rallymaster, a gentleman named Hank Jeter who drove a beautiful TR-3, claimed it was sponsored by an organization named The Friendly Sons of Molly Pitcher. They may have really existed or just been a figment of his vivid imagination, but the event was always most enjoyable, very challenging and always included a rest break at, naturally, Molly Pitcher's Well. Just one of the many joys of growing up near the Jersey Shore at a time when we were able to laugh at ourselves.

But, I digress. My wager for today is on the Molly Pitcher (this one's for you Hank)
