Default Calumet buys Mr. Z, enters Preakness..

You can't make it up..

To seemingly appease Lukas, Zayat sells Mr. Z to Calumet who becomes 8th entrant to Preakness.

American Pharoah (Baffert/V. Espinoza)
Firing Line (S. Callaghan/Stevens)
Dortmund (Baffert/M. Garcia)
Divining Rod (Delacour/Castellano)
Danzig Moon (Casse/Leparoux)
Bodhisattva (Corrales/McCarthy)
Tale of Verve (Stewart/Rosario)
Mr. Z (Lukas/Nakatani)

Sale pending on Mr Z, could run for Calumet

A potential private sale of MR Z could put him in the Preakness with a new owner, trainer D. Wayne Lukas said Wednesday.

Lukas said Mr Z could be sold to Calumet Farms by Zayat Stables, but said the deal has yet to go through.

"If it does, he runs. If it doesn't, he won't,"
said Lukas, who said Corey Nakatani would ride if Mr Z runs.

ETA: HR/TVG now reporting news that sale has gone through.

I'd do a rolleyes but at least the last Lukas/Calumet starter in the Preakness was a winner.

Well, maybe that will help inject speed into the race.

Zayat scores out selling this colt. Would assume it was for around 1 to 1.5 million for a colt with all his conditions left lol

With their arrival at Pimlico just now, twitter is now flooded with comments.

the 1 hole is definitely a challenge for American Pharaoh. the derby pace was perceived as slow, so i think we can expect a quick pace in the Preakness. Mr Z will almost certainly jump out there and try to get control. i'm sure Lukas is hoping he can pull off an Oxbow type run. so i think there's a good chance that a couple horses will have to crossover in front of American Pharaoh which means kickback. hopefully Espinoza can work out a good trip.

It's amusing how a very short time ago people thought AP was a dedicated front runner that needs the lead. Now getting out run early is the concern.

Lukas: We’re probably not talented enough to stay around (w/Mr. Z) but someone else could be compromised because of it.

Great reason for entering.

DWL will always be relevant, haters will hate but this guy is perhaps the greatest trainer ever, certainly in the mix. When he was winning everything in sight, folks criticized him for running his horses too often (the same folks who cried about the frail nature of the thoroughbred and the conservative nature of most trainers), now days when he has been eclipsed win-wise by younger trainers (many who learned their craft under him) folks question him relentlessly for entering "hopeless longshots" while complaining about short fields in stake races...haters gonna hate! I will not be at all surprised if Mr Z ends up in the winners circle Saturday but even if he runs dead last, my respect for the great DWL will be maintained!

like him or not, HOF or not, if he indeed entered this horse with this mentality, then its poor judgement, and i feel sorry for those who wager on him.

sticking around making comments like this, overruling an owner to the point of having the horse sold to prove that you know you're probably not good enough but your entry could compromise others is a flawed mentality and he's become more like Gennadi Dorochenko with his horse entry/placement

Are you kidding? Haters gonna hate? How can you possibly defend what he said?
