Desperate times in Detroit? First-year head coach John Kuester, who oozes of competence and experience, has lorded over the Pistons' longest stretch of losing in 17 years. He's shaken up the lineup several times, but mostly has acted as a switchboard operator, plugging in healthy or semi-healthy bodies for frontline players that have gone down with injuries at a dizzying pace. Player availability issues don't explain everything that is going on in Detroit, however. The questions I had about this team entering the season remain unanswered. What is the plan here? What kind of team is Joe Dumars crafting? Where does Rip Hamilton end and Ben Gordon begin? Does Tayshaun Prince walk into the locker room and jump with fright at the sight of his doppelgänger, Austin Daye? Just what exactly has been accomplished by the Ben Wallace farewell tour in the Motor City? Why was Charlie Villanueva such a free agent get when the Bucks didn't even see fit to extend a qualifying offer to the jump-shooting big man? I could go on all day with the questions (Is Rodney Stuckey really a point guard?), but you get the idea. Dumars has until the trade deadline to make some sense of all this and I'm sure he knows what he's doing. Doesn't he?

What else was he going to do? There wasnt much of a free agent market last year and its not like they could simply pocket the money.

Basketball is a business. He has to put butts in seats. He can't say to his season ticket holders "hey, we are goint to save the money for next year". Ben Gordon was a hit or miss pick but it was worth the shot and at very least he can score. CV was a bargain.

The team sucks...they were going to suck anyway. Whats your point? Would they not suck with David Lee? Milsap? Any of the other free agents?

Detroit is practically giving away tickets because the team is terrible. What was he going to do? Maybe sign players that could help rebuild insead of a two one dimensional guys? Maybe trade for expiring contracts and use the money wisely instead of tying it up ? I cant believe you continue to defend these signings. Are you related to Joe?

Like who? Who else was he going to sign? David Lee at 12 million? Milsap at 10 million? and thats if they would even want to come to detroit. And would you really give those guys that money? Trade WHAT for expiring contracts? You think anyone wants anything they have for what they are getting paid? LOL

Its easy to sit back and judge but you don't have to sell that city, coach or team to a big time free agent. And beyond that you dont have to sell to a fan base that is use to a bit more.

The old "who else was he going to get" theory? They could have done nothing, saved the money and be 12-25 with no one coming to the games. You really think Ben Gordon or Charlie Villanueva sell tickets? They are not guys who further the cause, put a foundation down to create a better team. These were terrible signings.

You can't "just do nothing". You miss the point...badly. If those guys go somewhere else and do really well, guys like you are coming back and saying "detroit should have signed them".

Villanueva is averaging 14 pts and 5.5 rebounds per game and plays 30 minutes a game. What exactly do you expect at 7 years and 35 million these days?
