![]() Three-time Canadian champion Rainbows for Life was euthanized in the Czech Republic on Saturday due to the infirmities of old age, Racing Post reported. He was 24.
Rainbows for Life initially raced as a homebred for Sam-Son Farm, then was campaigned in partnership by Sam-Son and Josephine Abercrombie’s Pin Oak Stud in 1993, his final season on the track. The Lyphard horse was named Canada’s champion two-year-old colt in 1990 and champion grass horse and older horse in 1992. Rainbows for Life won 15 of 36 starts and $1,105,926 during four seasons of racing. Half of his ten career stakes wins came in graded stakes company, including course recordsetting performances in the 1991 Hawthorne Derby (G3) at Hawthorne Race Course and the 1992 New Hampshire Sweepstakes (G3) at Rockingham Park. Rainbows for Life entered stud in Ireland in 1994 and was sold two years later to stand at Hrebcin Napajedla in the Czech Republic, where he became a leading sire. Through Tuesday, he has sired 144 winners who have earned a total of $6,848,938. His 29 stakes winners include Czech champions Sixteen, Ready for Life, Ray of Light, Monolit, Vacaria, and Matter for Love, as well as Austrian champion Killer Queen. Out of two-time Canadian champion and 1994 Canadian Broodmare of the Year Rainbow Connection, Rainbows for Life was a half brother to Group 2 winner Colour Chart and stakes winner Always a Rainbow. ![]() As someone pm'd me to ask, this was his 15th start.
He had only had one win and it was back in 2007. He only had a total of three starts this year and had fallen in the first, at Ffos Las. Trainer "unknown" (I haven't seen that before), AP Mc Coy rode him once, he was French, went off at 6/1 and the only comment is this... Unruly start, fatally injured and pulled up before 1st (op 9-2) That's everything I can find. Sorry he's gone. |

![]() I know were not supposed to post things in their entirety but I also know this is okay.
From Mr. Channons website and anyone who reads it knows this name... YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE A GOOD HORSE TO BE A GREAT HORSE In sport there's seldom time for sentimentality. We know that. However, news reached us that a very popular horse has passed on today. He wasn't particularly good and wouldn't cause debate and conversation in your local pub. Except The Harrow in West Ilsley probably. Alfredtheordinary was aptly named. He was however, honest, genuine and put his all into every task he ever faced. You can't ask for more than that. His willingness probably led to his downfall, but he brought smiles and admiration to many people. From his nursery win at Kempton in front of 300 punters to his game but abysmal hurdling career that began and ended at Taunton on the very same day. Most importantly, he got Youmzain ready for two and a half tilts at the Arc. As Michael Jnr admits, he was a proper horse. "He was our syndicate flagship horse and more or less lived on the horsebox in his juvenile season. He took me and my mates everywhere and Hugh Bowman still talks about how he had the biggest following for a moderate horse he could ever imagine. "He was just a horse, I know that, but they don't have to be top class - they help to forge friendships between strangers and give you a hell of a lot of great days to remember. "He went to war every day - at the races or on the gallops. We used to joke that he was worth £4 Million at home but £400 on the racecourse as he beat Youmzain 90% of the time on the gallops. "There are so many talented horses that you wish could have Alfred's heart. That's why he was so popular. "Elaine Harwood looked after him here and Mikaela Burry cared for him in his retirement which should have been much longer than he got. Sadly his willingness did for him as a kissing spine caused him particular problems. "Russell Brown also doted on him, that makes him a special horse regardless of what he achieved on the racecourse. "I guess you don't have to be a good horse to be a great horse." Alfred's duels with Youmzain are still on the Gallop archives and his big day at Kempton can be seen on the Features and Lord Ilsley pages. It's probably the best laugh you can have with regards to watching an over-enthusiastic syndicate winning fifteen hundred quid. http://mickchannon.tv/page/news |

![]() Great Show, 8 years old, in R1 at Happy Valley (HK).
Originally known as Great Hero in NZ, he had only 2 wins (at Avondale in 2008 and at Happy Valley in April of last year) from 36 starts. His rating was 25 and he broke down in a Class 5 race. Hope he didn't suffer. Rest in peace. |
