The elderly only lose their short term memory.
I still remember my escapades with Bea Arthur way back when. |

I think Sunriver might be a sleeper as a stallion. I wouldn't be at all shocked if he proved to be a useful and versatile sire.

XCELLENT FoxSportsAU..... Xcellent forced into retirement January 20, 2008 THE career of star New Zealand galloper Xcellent is over. The New Zealand Derby winner and Melbourne Cup placegetter broke down following his win in the Group Three Trentham Stakes. Xcellent was transported to the renowned veterinary clinic at Massey University in Palmerston North. But the vet report was not good, co-trainer Paul Moroney said. “He has a severe suspensory damage in his left ankle and a couple of bone chips at the front of the fetlock,'' Moroney said. “They have said in their opinion it is a career-ending injury. The damage is severe. “I think we just have to face the facts that Xcellent's stellar career is over.'' The incident completed a sad two days for the Moroney stable. On Friday, the stable's former top two and three-year-old Jokers Wild was put down in Melbourne after failing to recover from a blood infection. Xcellent was sidelined from racing for 20 months with tendon injuries and then incurred a shoulder injury when being prepared for spring racing last year. Moroney said Xcellent was the most talented horse with whom he had been associated. “Without any doubt. To win at Group One level from 1400 to 2400 metres and to be placed in a Melbourne Cup at just his ninth start - he was just an absolute freak.'' AAP His thread..... http://www.derbytrail.com/forums/showthread.php?t=12426 His website..... http://www.xcellent.co.nz/ ... and his last (as in last and hopefully not final) diary entry..... Friday, January 18, 2008 Well, folks, I'm back on the road again. Me and four of my stablemates loaded up at 1 am this morning and headed south to a place called Otaki where we are stabling overnight. It's the first time I've been away since going to Brisbane in June and I must say it's forgot how much I like a change of scenery. Chrissie tells me that I'm off to a track called Trentham tomorrow for another race, this time going more distance so I'm really looking forward to that. Chrissie says Trentham is a nice, big galloping track that will suit my style of racing. She also says that that Slick horse isn't racing this time and that the opposition are all a bit frightened of taking me on. I wish Slick was there because I've got a matter to get right with him. Oh, well, that will just have to wait. I'm feeling good and have had a coouple of gallops this week. I went to the Tauranga races last wek for a gallop between races and I embarrassed myself and Mickey a bit when I shied at a bloke standing on a fence as I was easing down and dumped Mickey on the track. He hung on to the reins and I simply stopped and let him back on but I did feel a bit of a goose when we got back to the birdcage and I know Mickey did as well but no harm done. I know Paul's happy with me at the moment and apparently Mike is coming over from Melbourne to watch me race tomorrow as he's really keen for me to go back to Melburne soon and that would be fun. We did have some sad news today, though. My good mate Jokers Wild went to horse heaven. The poor bugger got an infection in his ankle after an operation in Melbourne and the infection caused a lot of damage to his cartilage and bone. I know everyone tried hard to save him but he'd been in too much pain so he lost his battle today. He was a real, cool dude, a real flashy horse with plenty of spunk and many people liked him a lot. I'm just going to go out and win for him tomorrow, he'd like that. Hope a few of you can come along and watch tomorrow. Just look for me in the winner's stall! See you there, Stanley Happier days..... http://www.xcellent.co.nz/selectphoto.page?photo_id=900 http://www.xcellent.co.nz/selectphoto.page?photo_id=901 |

The loss of Gallant Knight will have a ripple effect throughout the industry that will be felt for many years to come.
On the other two....if they bred them the horse would come from so far back he would make Silky Sullivan look like a speedball. |
