Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807–1882)

The Fire of Drift-Wood
We sat within the farm-house old,
Whose windows, looking o'er the bay,
Gave to the sea-breeze damp and cold,
An easy entrance, night and day.

Not far away we saw the port,
The strange, old-fashioned, silent town,
The lighthouse, the dismantled fort,
The wooden houses, quaint and brown.

We sat and talked until the night,
Descending, filled the little room;
Our faces faded from the sight,
Our voices only broke the gloom.

We spake of many a vanished scene,
Of what we once had thought and said,
Of what had been, and might have been,
And who was changed, and who was dead;

And all that fills the hearts of friends,
When first they feel, with secret pain,
Their lives thenceforth have separate ends,
And never can be one again;

The first slight swerving of the heart,
That words are powerless to express,
And leave it still unsaid in part,
Or say it in too great excess.

The very tones in which we spake
Had something strange, I could but mark;
The leaves of memory seemed to make
A mournful rustling in the dark.

Oft died the words upon our lips,
As suddenly, from out the fire
Built of the wreck of stranded ships,
The flames would leap and then expire.

And, as their splendor flashed and failed,
We thought of wrecks upon the main,
Of ships dismasted, that were hailed
And sent no answer back again.

The windows, rattling in their frames,
The ocean, roaring up the beach,
The gusty blast, the bickering flames,
All mingled vaguely in our speech;

Until they made themselves a part
Of fancies floating through the brain,
The long-lost ventures of the heart,
That send no answers back again.

O flames that glowed! O hearts that yearned!
They were indeed too much akin,
The drift-wood fire without that burned,
The thoughts that burned and glowed within.

Well you wont catch me in my last days here appearing in the "smart peoples only " rooms.

I've decided to let them go on without me in their inexorable drive to find the horsey most likely to finish tomorrow.

You really were getting in the way of the threads asking for free PPs or inquiring as to when and where this Breeder's Cup thing is taking place.

Let's put it this way....if I don't come back then I have left.

If I do then I haven't......but I won't do much longer. My head hurts more every day.Sometimes the fork in the path keeps coming up.It's a hard concept to grasp....although I'm sure some of the masterminds in GenPop could explain it.

I think I have to cut off all lines of outside communication again as it just ain't workin' sa hot...for as long as I remain if I do.

One thing's for sure....if I had it to do all over again.....well then I wouldn't.

At least for now.

!Vulvarenes!

Too much. While Minny-SO-tah's defense shows about as much command of the opposition as Grooves shows of the English language, they have managed to not get beaten by more than 23 all year (and we needn't look far down all the polls to see who defeated them by that margin).

I do not think the Vulvarenes will be the first to do so. This sets up as a letdown for them, after a pretty big win given the cirumstances last week, and with three tough games after this one.

I also think that Lloyd and his fine coaching staff approach these games -against what they perceive to be inferior competition - as conservatively as possible until they absolutely have to take a risk (see Appalachian State, Northwestern, Eastern Michigan).

When you add the fact that both Henne and Hart are likely to be out or limited, you will see a lot of run-run-pass-punt with the Freshman QB and young RBs in there.

I think the Vulvarenes will win, but I would expect it to be close for three quarters and I would be surprised if they won by more than three TDs in the end.

Now if you'll excuse me, I must get back to caring about the racing and weather forecast in New Jersey, and roughing up the suspect while thinking of Thebby.

As a man who appreciates the fine traditions of mighty Big Ten football, you might like this anecdote from Lloyd's press conference on the history of the Little Brown Jug.

"You remember Tommy Roberts. He was the manager in 1903. Coach [Fielding] Yost, when they got up there, with good cause, he did not trust Minnesota would provide good, clean drinking water. He sent Tommy Roberts out to buy a jug. The Michigan team drank water from that jug. Whether or not they had cups, I do not know.

"After the game, it was very unfair that Minnesota fans rushed the field before the game was over, or we all know Michigan would have won that game. Instead it ended in a 6-6 tie. In their rush to leave and get back on the train, they let the jug there. When they got back to Ann Arbor, Coach Yost, a very frugal man, realized the jug - they hadn't brought it back. He didn't call or leave a text message. He wrote a letter. He asked them to return the jug. Of course, they said if you want it, come and play for it.

"That's how today we happen 104 years later, and we're still playing for the coveted jug … the oldest trophy in college football. It has a great tradition and great meaning here. When you lose it, it's a miserable experience. When you win it, you get to keep that jug where it belongs. I mean, we bought that jug."

Great stuff as per usual ,LF.

I didn't realize the state of repairs the team was in.

And the LBJ thing was interesting...had no idea.I thought you were going to go into the LBJ in Delaware...the 3rd leg of buggy racings triple crown. There's some kind of thing to that one about Ohio and Michgan horses where if one wins...that team will win in late November.

Anyhoo....well done and highly amusing. I will not give the buy signal to Michgan this week.
