OK, so one AT $100K. But still haven't heard about any at over 100K. They had to scrape to get 6 horses in there; Romans and Orseno send out uncoupled entries and Spite the Devil looks like a filler.

There has been plenty of claims at $100,000.

I'm still trying to figure out who Steve likes, LOL.

Why not just card the thing as a conditioned stake, the same horses would have shown up.

Here's a 100K claiming story I thought most might enjoy.
My racing partner and I claimed one for 50K a few years ago at Saratoga and earned 60K over the next 6 months including a nose loss for second in a Grade 3 at Calder. After a bad effort in another stakes, we put him in for
100K and lost him at Gulfstream.
In the meantime,my son, about age 10 at the time , had bonded with this horse. He had been exposed to plenty of others, but for some reason this guy was special to him. Believe me he was not happy with his old man. I explained the business aspect of racing to him, but that was useless.
Well, the horse was put on my watch list, but never showed up in the entries. Every week and sometimes daily for the next several months my son would ask if there was any news on "his horse." After some investigative work, I found there was an injury, followed by surgery, then another injury and finally into a sale for $3500. All this without ever racing!
Finally, after 15 months from the claim, he showed up at Penn National for $3500 and ran last by 20 lenghts as the favorite. I called the trainer the next day and asked if this horse needed to be retired. After a negotiation with the trainer and the owner, which was his mother, I bought the horse back for $1000. He was shipped out in a few days and now resides about 10 minutes from our home. My son now has "his horse" for his riding horse. Actually, he's pretty much become a member of the family with frequent visits and family grooming and happy as a horse should be.

Default Spooky!

Didn't Paul Pompa and Pat Reynolds grab Spooky Mulder for $100,000 when they took him?

There was a pretty good $100k claiming story in DRF about two years ago. I forget which track but there was a horse who had four slip dropped on him. He broke down in the race and before the shake the trainers got together and said let's all just put in $25k and be done with this. Well, one trainer refused and he won the shake. LOL! Sad about the horse, but atleast the dummy trainer got his due...$100k was due!

A harness horse that was claimed for 150,000 or more several times.

I'm pretty sure that's right. And I think they made their money back on that investment.

Yes, they did. They took the horse from Scott Lake, right? Or, did Lake claim the horse from them? My brain is failing me a bit here, LOL.

JJP put up an entry in the Trip Notes Room about Artie Hot yesterday in the 7th... It was Artie Hot that I was refering to that I believed needed to be claimed for $40,000. And I suggested him to a group. That group wanted to claim him, but thanks to a bizarre rule from the Florida HPBA, could not.

Seems that if you want to claim a horse these days in Florida, you have to use cash (!) or have money in your horseman's account or wire transfer in by 1pm the day of the race. These guys got a cashier's check for the $40,000 and the 6% tax, yesterday morning, and were refused the claim when arriving at GP.

There isn't a racing jurisdiction anywhere that won't take a cashier's check. Truly amazing. FL HPBA wants cashier's checks in 48 hours before a race. 48 hours? The race was barely drawn 48 hours ahead... how in hell is anyone going to have a cashier's check drawn then when they don't know they have aninterest in a horse yet? Ridiculous.

Anyway, if you saw the race, you saw that Artie Hot ran big yet again, and now won't possibly be available again for $40,000 as he went unclaimed.

Steve, sorry to hear about the hurdles your people had to jump through. Interestingly enough, I think there are a couple of tracks that will not except cashiers checks -- mainly, NYRA. I am not sure if the rule still stands, however, for quite some time, NYRA would only allow cash for same day or wire transfer (by a certain time, or perhaps even the day before). The reason, from what I've been told and you may remember the details as I do not and I am certainly not going to mention names, is that NYRA found itself in the midst of a problem where a person took off with money that originated from fraudulent cashiers checks.

Does anyone remember that -- a certain trainer, who ultimately had a problem with a family member? I was told that NYRA moved to a cash, wire transfer, etc. standard.

BTW, I looked at that horse. First of all -- the claiming game (to claim or not to claim) is a circular, never ending game of mental you-know-what. But, the first thing I see, and it jumps out at me every single time is -- the horse was in for the bottom! He's not protecting him at all, and all he's buying is 2lbs. He already got 2lbs. from the NW condition. Second -- and it's not good or bad, but the colt is turf only. He also blows the condition on the win and I would want to know where in the book I could go with him after. Is the an N3L? I was kind of on the fence. I didn't watch any replays or make any calls though.

Good call.

Eric

I remember Sforza, I bet on him a time or two. I'm happy to hear that he has a nice home.
