PP,

Circular Quay is the barn pet around the T.A.P. shed... Any Given Saturday is the horse Pletcher wants to win with. When I talked to him Saturday after the race, he was very disappointed. I didn't understand until yesterday why... 'Saturday' now needs to finish 1-2 in the Blue Grass to MAKE the Derby grid. And the way the race is shaping up, that's no certainty... It would be stunning if Any Given Saturday ended up excluded from the Derby.

Speaking of the 'SNS' route, start adding Street Magician to your stable watches. Trombetta's Preakness colt... He's taking the Bernardini route...

Would not necessarily dismiss Bird from any discussion just yet. Give him another start this year.

Amazed that Hard Spun fell so far off the one poor effort.

Agree with Notional being that high as professional does seem like the correct term to describe him at this point

Still believe NBLS is most talented, but blinkers better work in the Wood

That poor effort was confirmed when the horse that beat him, Tueflesberg, went on to be soundly beaten last week by a talented horse making only his second start, Curlin. Most people view Tueflesberg as a horse that doesn't belong on the derby trail. So its make or break time for Hard Spun this week. He fell fast with one bad effort, but he could also climb fast if he has a convincing win this weekend. I wouldn't count on it though.

Agree on company line idea as I do not like teufelsburg at all. Just think that with a good effort at Turfway he could easily redeem himself to at least be in top 10. Also believe he might have a brighter future on grass but of course that is not topic of this thread

Default Street Sense back on top - albeit narrowly

Immediately following his Tampa Bay Derby win, I was anxious to see how many could become believers in Street Sense. Honestly, I was a bit surprised. He is now ranked #1 in the Dispatch Derby Poll... but not my much!

I am not surprized at all. Set the track record, and really never pushed. All he needs is a good effort in the Bluegrass, and pop on Derby day. Setting up pretty good for this guy.

Only concern is another effort like that might leave him spent for Derby. Still thought Street Sense had another great setup and allowed Borel to do what he does best, hug the rail

Amazing that we know think that 'races' are too tough on horses. And then we are in shock when a "heavily raced" horse like Ravel breaks down.

Just wondering if Trombetta's giving Street Magician mugging lessons to follow the SNS route.

I agree. But you have to consider it when analyzing how horses are coming up to a big race such as KY Derby.

I dont believe this to be true for horses that have already proven a certain level of ability. For a horse to suddenly jump up and run a huge race that was far better than its previous efforts, then it could be an issue. But for fast horses to run fast, I dont see where it matters.
