They need a superstar player in return in any trade and any superstar is going to get max money. I know about Kristic's injury but I haven't heard that he's not going to return. When he does, he's a much better player than Kwame Brown, even at 60% or so. Plus, Kwame is also coming off of a series of injuries himself. Neither one of them alone makes a great player but the two of them combined could give u a decent center combo. Add in Andrew Bynum and u have a 3-headed monster.
You like Carters style of play? The hoist it up, no D, no rebounding, sulking, type? Nobody wants to give Carter max money. He is just not the kind of guy you build a team around. Toronto practically gave him away. He may be a superstar player in the fans eyes but the reality is that he is not a highly coveted player.
Kristic is a better player than Brown, no doubt. But he would make Brown expendable and he is too expensive to play 10 minutes a game.

He fills a need the Lakers are weak at which is a defensive point guard. With that #3 pick, the options are wide open. Maybe a Corey Brewer or one of the Florida big men? Or how bout trade Odom and the #3 for Pierce and the #5. They could still grab one of the Florida big men and would be able to field of lineup of Brown, Noah/Horford, Pierce, Farmar/Lue, Johnson. They'd have size, quickness and great scoring. Or offer Odom and the #3 for Kevin Garnett. In either trade scenario involving Odom, they would still have their mid-level exception to use on a veteran player. And in all of this, they keep their prized young big man Andrew Bynum.
If they trade Kobe to Atlanta for Joe Johnson, Tyrone Lue and the #3, Jack will become a Clippers fan

Kobe's I want to be traded spiel on his site is now down.
I wonder what his agent is thinking... He cant be telling Kobe to pull all this crap. I wonder how much of this we would hear if LA could get themselves into the East. There is just no way for the Lakers in the West right now. Patience is apparently not the operative thought in LA.

You are obviously thinking a lot about this Mr. King. Much more than I am. But I think Mr. Cannon is right. Kwame is lame, physically and mentally. And Odom is so inconsistent and injury prone. That group gets destroyed in the West. With Portland and Seattle getting the draft picks they got... Dallas, Phoenix, Utah, San Antonio, Houston... holy schmokes its tough. Sometimes you have to just sit back and let events take place. Injuries occur, changes are made by others that allow for opportunity. The Lakers are in a tough spot at the moment. Phil and Buss realize this I believe. Kobe is on oscillation mode.

I also believe this. Carter is pure entertainment. Some teams apparently covet this quality, others want to win. And Carter is also getting injured all the time. His star fades.

What u guys are not doing is looking at other options. U are saying what won't work and looking at the shortcomings of Brown and Odom and Carter and Kristic, etc but u aren't saying what will work? If they don't trade Kwame, they are STILL going to have him. And since u agree that he's pretty pathetic, who's going to want him at that price? The Lakers either have to find a dummy to take him and his expiring contract or they have to keep him. I think he's staying. I'm not in any way saying that he's a solid player and makes a difference. I'm just saying this is what u are going to have. Odom is what he is. He'll never be a superstar player but if he's not traded, he'll still be here too. I'm asking what u guys would do? Do u stand pat and not trade Kobe and not trade anyone else and keep the same team that's gone sub-.500 since Shaq was traded and won't go anywhere next year either? What deals do u make? Do u ride it out with Kobe and take the chance that he opts out in two years and u get nothing in return? Or do u trade him now while he's still got value and avoid what happened to the Bulls post-Jordan and the Celtics post-Bird? They can't just sit on their hands. They got to make a major move. U guys are telling me that the deals I'm proposing would leave them with teams that would get crushed in the West. Isn't that what's already happening now and why Kobe wants out?

Why not?

No they dont.

Things can change radically in one year. Again, players get hurt, players become disgruntled, and opportunites open up (draft in one year, who knows). Imo the Lakers have got to wait. Making moves that put you in a deeper hole dont work. Panic at a time when choices are limited is not the answer. At this time they just dont have many options, although I do complement your work on trying. Options that are much more viable will most likely present themselves if they wait imo.

I just cant see what they can do especially with the salary cap. You are right about Brown and the only way you could get rid of him would be a package deal where you forced a team to take him if they wanted another player. But with Kobe's contract I dont think that you can package Brown with him without a getting a ton of contract money back, which is hard to do. The only option may be a three way trade where 2 teams can spread some of the contract money around and find matching parts.
