just making the point that it doesn't matter what any of us believe, because it is not up to us.

They will do the right thing.

so, the abortion test will no longer apply just to supreme court justices?

"we at burger world are impressed with your resume...but what's your stance on abortion? pro choice, oh, sorry....you can't flip burgers here."

people have a right to their opinion, a right to free speech, as well as assembly. majerus was off the clock, assembling, and using his right to free speech.
if the college can't handle that, that's their problem. he's there to coach basketball, not teach catholic doctrine.

this guy burke who brought it all up is the same guy who said pols who are pro choice shouldn't receive communion. he's in the wrong country, we don't do things like that here--this country is no theocracy.

Default Another angle

Would you expect the local archbishop to take a pass on this? He's got a job to do, too. I respect Majarus for standing up and saying what he believes ... same goes for AB Burke though.

Oh for the love of mike ,here.

You're all missing the point.

The Catholic laws say you can do what you want....just don't admit it. If your views differ from theirs and they employee you.....just don't say what they are.

If you had an abortion...just say you got fat and went on a diet. If you had sex with a minor....don't say anything. If you are pro abortion....when asked just say you don't know ( and don't want to know) what abortion means.

And if you coach an outrageously bad fb team ........

...well that one's pretty hard to hide.

"These beliefs are ingrained in me," Majerus told the paper. "And my First Amendment right to free speech supersedes anything that the archbishop would order me to do. My dad fought on Okinawa in World War II. My uncle died in World War II. I had classmates die in Vietnam. And it was to preserve our way of life, so people like me could have an opinion."

The dispute between the archbishop and the coach puts students and faculty in the midst of a common clash pitting Catholic doctrine against intellectual freedom. The private university is independent of the Archdiocese of St. Louis, and therefore beyond the bishop's purview, but is tied to it culturally as a Catholic institution.

"I'm a Catholic, and I support the church's stance. As an American, I also support people's free speech," said Andrew Clifton, the Student Government Association president.

Berry said Burke doesn't have any direct control over the university, which is operated by priests in the Jesuit order, also known as the Society of Jesus.
