My local track, Keeneland, is a paradise, but until last year, I was involved in child transport from school in the middle of the afternoon. Then I had to get dinner on the table for the family. It has been much more convenient to bet online for me. And honestly, I dislike going to the track by myself; it is much more fun for me to have people to talk to and argue the merits of our picks. Unfortunately, most of my horse buddies are industry professionals who working on racedays. However, my son's new girlfriend has a Brisbet account...,I might just have to adopt her.

I am the opposite. I much rather go to the track by myself. I just like to enjoy the day/atmosphere, with me and my form.

Living in SC I have no choice. Having said that, it's a lot easier and more enjoyable to cap and bet from home.

Where at the track can you have a nice chair or couch, your own refrigerator, several TV's, private bathroom, and drinks are cheap.

Having done it for years I get out of my element at actual tracks.

Having the internet there are no lines to bet and all the information I need is at my finger tips.

Steve Crist had an article this week where he said the same thing saying he's close to Belmont but goes once a week only because betting at home is easier and more effective.

(exception: Saratoga anyday)

Default Online is the future, the grandstand is our heritage.

I have been a racing fan since I was a kid. When I was 18, I used to buy the form the night before and do the handicapping for hours on the kitchen table, then drive to Garden State Park (RIP) and place bets and watch the races. It was great, and I still plan to hit local tracks (I should say track - Philly Park) once in a while.

I go to OTB's and the casinos that have racebooks, and I would only use the electronic devices for account wagering there. I never again want the feeling of being in line, two people away from the teller when that bell rings and I am locked out.

That said, I believe the true power and appeal of simulcasting can only be reached by giving complete access to the bettor. I love the online wagering, because it allows me to play more often without the commute or disrupting other necessary things I need to do at home. And I still have the advantage of not being locked out and by having more time to see the odds impact of my proposed wagers.

I cannot wager online in Arizona, a constant thorn in my side, which is just another reason I want to be back in the Buckeye state, and will eventually. I also cannot wager on harness or quarterhorse races, which pisses me off, and no horse wagering after 7:00 p.m., plus during the day I can only bet on a select few tracks, so I have to hope they are carrying the track I want to bet.

Gotta love Arizona...

At home, It's much easier to avoid chasing money. Change the channel to another sport, and try them the next day. Fact is there are people around you doing other things than gambling on horses, and that just naturally makes it easier to switch off your competitive juices. At the track, it's a bunch of gamblers, and, for the most part, it's best to avoid that. It's great to talk to other gamblers before a card etc., and it's o.k. to bet horses with them once in a while, but day in/ day out it just is best to avoid it(because you want to avoid the whole mutuel losing thing.)Just because others are losing more than you doesn't make it o.k. to lose more than you should. The negative of betting from home is ya don't get as much feedback from others on your wins. Trust me, they don't care that you won.

I live about an hr(w/o traffic) from a live track, 15 minutes from a very nice OTB, but I bet online 5 of 7 days. I go to the track several times a year and the OTB on Saturdays.

Online betting is so much more convenient. I never bet at the OTB...the takeout there is 6%..so I use my online account to bet when I'm there anyway.
The OTB is distracting with the noise competition from "other" tracks I don't follow.

Although I don't use it you could use www.NJ4bets.com.

While I do wager from home, living in NJ my choices are VERY limited to the NJSEA's platform, (MONOPOLY). I like using Formulator to handicap while at home and wish some tracks would offer a wireless connection for geeks like me so I could bring my laptop and have the full functionality of Formualtor at the track instead of just a print out of the pps.

I still like to go to the track with friends and usually make the 1 - 1 1/2 hour trip to Aqueduct or Belmont. Actually I think I will get to the track about 15 times this year including 7 days at the SPA.

Default online wagering

Most of my wagers are made online using Youbet and i watch the races on TVG, mainly because i live in Tennessee and am not close to any tracks. I am close to Kentucky Downs which simulcasts but that is without a doubt the worse run place i have ever encountered and i would just as soon miss out on a win as to go there. I actually like the Youbet format a lot because you see so much information on the screen at any one time, i tried the TwinSpires one as well but i didn't care for it at all so i cancelled it very quickly.
All that being said, i bet online out of necessity and i do enjoy it but the experience of online wagering is not one tenth as satisfying to me as going to the track to watch them live. One downside of wagering online is that my average wager per race is a lot higher online than it would be at the track because you don't have the same feeling of pain as you do when you fork over the cash each time - thats good i guess if you win but like most people, i lose more often than i win so my budget takes a hit every now and then! lol

I have online accounts with Twin Spires and TVG. I use Twin Spires 90% of the time; I only use TVG to bet tracks that TS doesn't carry. It is easier for me to bet online since I work oddball hours at times. I also find it easier to play from home on big days when the wife has plans in the middle of the day.

I live 30 minutes from Kentucky Downs and between 2-3 hours from Ellis, Churchill and Keeneland. I will go to KD for their live meet, and maybe 4-5 times a year to simulcast (just to get a change of scenery). I do travel to the other 3 tracks about 6 times each during the year to catch some live racing.

Easy there...I like Ky Downs, but you have to pony up and join the club instead of hanging with the $2 degenerates in the regular area. The Sly Fox - I think it's now the Winning Colors bar- has pretty good food, you can get a drink, and I always go with a good group. The other area there with all the southern KY hillbillies is pretty pathetic.

To the original topic...how many of you that prefer online wagering have a family at home? I think that would change the answer considerably. To me a trip to the OTB at Southland Greyhound park involves an afternoon of hanging out with friends, something that family men don't get enough of. I play online occasionally, but I get excited when I'm at the track or OTB in person.

I agree with the "southern KY hillbillies are pretty pathetic" portion of your statement. I have never seen so many people stand in line and handicap at the window. I really love the ones that get to the window, turn around and look at one of the TV screens, and spit out about 50 trifecta combinations to the teller. My friend told one of them to go play the lottery if he wanted to do that (in not-so-friendly terms ).

I am lucky in that my wife will let me have plenty of days to go to the track with my friends. She has also been cool enough to let us get together at my house and bet online all day and play poker at night. She is definately a keeper!

except for boutique meets racetracks are mty except for some homeless and
deadbeats who have no access to internet. within 10 yrs. because of cost of driving, ontrack costs (beer, coke, sandwich) no new fans intro into game we'll
have only a few big tracks with casinos or poker stay open. the wealthy will keep boutique trks open, most of others will fail if no casino to keep profits up. jobs and pay are on decline, and many people are walking away from this type of entertainment. hell saratoga is way down in attendance and handle.
delmar cutting purses, these are supposed to be well heel tracks.

I used to be all about going to the track by myself in the summer when I was 17/18. Now I actually work at Arlington Park so I don't go there much outside of work. If im going to bet, its usually on the job and I just use my iphone and goto bodog and place my bet. I also enjoy sitting and watching HRTV and TVG and betting online at my house.

I feel the same as you Kev..When I used to go to Sam Houston (when I lived there), I had a few "betting buddies" that I would sit with and talk horses with. I made a few extra bucks by listening to their views, but of course probably lost more in the end .. I also liked sitting alone sometimes as well and just focus on the horses... Now I have no choice but to wager at home, and do admit it is "convenient", but not as fun as going to the track.

I'm 25 and should be technologically advanced but.....figuring out which online wagering thing to sign up for confuses the heck out of me. So I just don't do it, and if I'm too lazy to go to the OTB, then I'm too lazy to wager.
