A fun set of posts to read -- I hope there are more to come. Both entertaining and educational, which is tough to do and tougher to beat.

Did you ever have any break down?

During a race? Yes. It's a sick feeling. A real old horse named Walted.

I had some who came out of races with career ending injuries. That's a pretty sick feeling too. Most of the horses I trained had problems to start with.

I've had it happen after they've won. Sudden Secret aired at Waterford (called Mountaineer Park now) at 10/1 odds. The track was in terrible shape. Yankee Gunner was the last one. I didn't own him, but he might have been the best horse I ever trained. I was starting to get a few decent owners in my final year. Not exactly people like HH The Aga Khan lining up for me, but I got a few owners with horses that could run.

(Curly haired guy with the porn mustache.)

One breakdown that pissed me off was a horse named Shad Pac. I won four races with her that season. Near the end of the season, her form was tailing off and she wasn't sound at all. I sold her real cheap to someone that said they wanted her as a broodmare and wouldn't ever race her.

I believed them. Look her up on that BRIS CD.

(Shad Pac's only sibling was stakes placed and made over 75k. The dam of Shad Pac won 19 races.)

Instead of waiting a few months to breed to her, they ran her at Beulah Park once and broke her down:

That pissed me off, but I was ring-wise enough to know that it's hard to take any buyer at their word in those days. I had lied plenty of times when I thought it would help me get one bought for the right price.

Great reading Doug and thanks for sharing that. Seeing those old PP's and $1500 claimers brought back memories. I haven't seen a good porn mustache in years.

A place one would go to rent a horse, back in the day. I'd imagine they were as well treated as rental cars today...

So, probably used as slang to say stable full of nags

I was trying to handicap this Derby and I'm thinking about Tencendur, as big as they come just banging around everything around him and Danzig Moon trying to bite everything around him and then I'm thinking about Doug with the Porn Mustache. I'm a mess. Then I'm thinking about Byk at the Fish Fry. I'm all confused. Then I have to think about nasal strips. I'm going to have weird dreams tonight. Most likely Doug and Byk with nasal strips, porn mustaches and fried fish. Very disturbing.

It was just a joke, something I've heard asked of folks when they mention a series of odd things. No offense intended.

I used to smoke some weed years ago and I could pick horses, but I couldn't bet them right. Was a disaster. I did that at Garden State years ago, drove me crazy. I'd bet horses to WP and should have done the Exacta or Tri and vice versa.

Gave up the weed about 40 years ago but not sure I'm picking any better. Still do the same dumb stuff. Don't really want to go on the weed, but a bunch of my track buddies do that and we all make those same mistakes.

So I kinda feel bad. I don't have any excuses. However, I've won some and lost some and am OK with that. I've bought every house I've ever owned with winnings from the track. I've paid off every mortgage I've ever had with winnings from the track.

Why stop here? Why not tell us about the time that you rode a Kentucky Derby winner?
