Wasn't Barbaro's debut a 100 plus Beyer?

I'm going to guess it was a 71 but I'm sure someone can dig it up.

Well, I would hope most people realize he was running on the grass before the Holy Bull.

I bet even the hot PETA girl knew.

A true racing person would yes. The PETA girl knows to get the veggie wrap, doesn't likely know the turf to dirt angle.

I love the Veggie Wrap!

Barbaro's debut beyer of 73 on turf was a stab figure---he won the one-mile race by 8 lengths, a fairly useful horse who won next out, and made it to stakes company, was 2nd.

He got a 102 winning the Laurel Futurity 2nd time out---also on turf.

TG had those horses running fast? I would think those numbers are questionable more than thinking they ruined the horses.

Must have been thinking of the Futurity as his first 100 plus figure. Thanks.

IMO, Stormello is not as talented as Brother Derek was at this point last year, and much like BD, he looks like an early developing type, who's already polished, and doesn't have much room for future improvement.

I believe he's rated that high because he won the Norfolk and Hollywood Futurity--the top two West Coast races for 2yo's around two turns. The same two races Brother Derek won last year.
Barbaro's dam was an atypical Carson City, in that she was stakes-placed at up to 11f on turf; she took after her mom's family rather than Carson City. Stormello comes from a family developed at Old English Rancho in So Cal that is full of 2yo SWs and sprinter/miler types. Even the cross of Lyphard (sire of second dam) hasn't enabled members of this line to stretch out longer.

I agree that Brother Derek was an early maturing type, who will not be as effective as his fellow gen 2003s catch up in maturity. There is nothing wrong with the horse at 4, he has just lost the advantage he had as a 2yo and early 3yo last year. Given his female line, Stormello may prove to be a similar type.

I never even considered her. She rates to have very close to zero dirt wins the rest of her career....how the hell can she win the Derby?

What's your weapon? I lettered in foil in college - that was all girls were allowed to compete with in those days. One of my teammates was Dave Brin, the scifi writer - he was an epee man.

Maybe close to zero on a scale of zero to 100. I think she has no shot in the Derby but she shouldn't have problems picking up a few more dirt wins against this pathetic crop of 3yo fillies.
