He lived up to his name, and had his very own Cinderella story.

In 2006, when the Takeover Target fiasco occured in Hong Kong and he (TT) was withdrawn from the Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Sprint, Absolute Champion, a mere stand-by starter, drew in.

He shocked everyone and won, beating an international field.... horses like the diva from Japan, She is Tosho, Benbaum, etc.

The locals were a tough bunch... Silent Witness, Scintillation, et al.

Ab Champ went on to win the Chairman's Sprint Prize...

http://www.hkjc.com/english/racing/r...2007&raceno=07

... the HSBC Premiere Bowl (beating Armada, Vengeance of Rain...)...

http://www.hkjc.com/english/racing/r...2006&raceno=09

... and recently (January) the Centenary Sprint Cup (beating Sacred Kingdom, Able Prince, etc.)...

http://www.hkjc.com/english/racing/r...2008&raceno=07

He was 2nd to Sacred Kingdom in his last HK start (Cent. Sprint Cup)...

http://www.hkjc.com/english/racing/r...2008&raceno=07

... and he lost his life last night in Singapore, in the KrisFlyer... a race I'll never bother to watch.

Ab Champ, whose original name was Genuis and Evil, was currently 4th on the Top 50 list...

Top 50 Horses (as of 15/5/2008) excerpt...

Rating Name Brand No Trainer

130 SACRED KINGDOM G268 P F Yiu
129 GOOD BA BA E201 A Schutz
129 VIVA PATACA G096 J Moore
126 ABSOLUTE CHAMPION E060 D J Hall
126 ARMADA E246 J Size
123 BULLISH LUCK C155 A S Cruz
123 FLORAL PEGASUS G011 A S Cruz
121 HELLO PRETTY E210 A S Cruz

He leaves behind connections who are obviously devastated, and fans all over the world.

He will be be missed, but never forgotten.

Run in peace, good boy and Hong Kong raider.

A sad day.

What a shame.

From DRF...

Celtic Dreamin, '07 British Columbia Derby winner, euthanized
By RANDY GOULDING

Celtic Dreamin, who won the Grade 3 British Columbia Derby last September and the Crystal Water Handicap at Santa Anita in March, was euthanized after breaking a leg at Hollywood Park on Sunday.

The gelding's owner, K.K. Sangara, said the injury happened after a six-furlong work.

"He worked great, but he broke a leg when he was pulling up after he had finished the work," said Sangara.

In 12 starts, Celtic Dreamin won 6 races and finished second 4 times, earning $600,543. He was trained by Rafael Becerra.

It was the second straight year that the winner of the B.C. Derby died in his 4-year-old year following a workout in California. Last year Halo Steven died from a reported heart attack after a work at Hollywood Park in January.

From TT.....

Storm Marcopolo dies from complications from anesthesia

by Michael Burns

Storm Marcopolo, the 2007 Argentinean champion sprinter, died on May 16 at Hagyard Equine Medical Institute near Lexington after experiencing complications from the anesthesia used to perform an MRI on his right front foot.
Purchased last summer by Michael Paulson for a United States campaign, Storm Marcopolo ended his Argentinian career with a seven-race win streak, capped by a victory on the turf in the Gran Premio Carrreras de las Estrellas Sprint (Arg-G1) on June 30 at San Isidro.

The five-year-old Bernstein horse hit the board once in three North American starts, placing third in the Holiday Cheer Stakes at Turfway Park on December 29 for trainer Ken McPeek. The Holiday Cheer was his final career start.

Storm Marcopolo also won the Ciudad de Buenos Aires (Arg-G1), Irlanda (Arg-G3) and Estados Unidos de America (Arg-G3) at Palermo.

“Storm Marcopolo was having a small problem with his right front foot,” McPeek said. “Several vets were unable to figure out the problem. It seemed to be an abscess, a wall separation, or a blind quarter crack. He was sent to Hagyard [Equine Medical Institute in Lexington] for a simple exam.

“They were trying to MRI the foot. He was given an anesthetic for the MRI that caused the problem. I do not know the details other than the attending vet called me to say that the horse died from complications from the anesthesia. He had only been galloping at Keeneland prior to this happening. It is very sad. This was a special horse.”

Bred in Argentina by Haras La Biznaga, Storm Marcopolo won seven of 13 starts and earned $79,788.
